Most people think of haiku as 5-7-5 syllable nature poems. This has never been the traditional definition of haiku; instead,
haiku are more like un-metered "word pictures" that often involve nature, but may also focus on human nature. A
poet presents the haiku poem to evoke in you the feeling that she had during that aha! moment so worthy of being recorded.
Each tiny poem is to be read slowly, chewed on, and savored. I must slow down to write haiku, & the reader must slow
down to find what lurks behind those few, very carefully chosen words.
Out of my haiku poetry sprung woodblock & vinyl block printmaking. I approach carving & printing like a toddler;
I am sloppy, spontaneous & simple. My prints always surprise me because they rarely look like what I had initially pictured
in my head. I like that lack of control.
