Send all contributions to: Christos Rigas - Editor Deadlines: 1st of each month REPORTING GUIDELINES When you report your DX loggings and QSL information to the column, please try to follow the same format as they appear in the individual columns. Any loggings should include the frequency, date of reception, time of reception (UTC for short-wave, Central Time for the Long Wave, Medium Wave, FM and TV loggings), station name, country, city and call letters of station if applicable. Also include what you heard as far as programming. When you send your loggings, also include your name and city where loggings were made, along with types of receivers and antennas used. If you would like to write a radio-related article or send in a letter to be published in DX Chicago, the best format is plain ASCII text file or MS-Word file. |
Notes from the Editor
Hello CADXers.
Welcome to the latest edition of DX Chicago. After a long delay we are back with another edition of DX Chicago. Hope everyone had a nice summer and that everybody is ready turn on their radios and for some DXing. Unfortunately DX, specially on the AM band got a little bit tougher lately, since FCC has authorized AM stations to use IBOC broadcasts at night. See the AM section for more details.
The CADX web site now includes a new article thanks to one of the founding members of the club. Karl Forth was kind enough to write a short history of the club. Check it out at http://home.earthlink.net/~dxchicago/
Until next time, 73's from Chris.

MEDIUM WAVE NEWS
New TIS's in Chicago area
I have noticed a new Chicago based TIS (Travellers Information Station) on the frequency of 1630 khz. The station in question is WQHE741, which operates near O'Hare International Airport (Manheim & I-190). This station provides parking information for the airport. It appears that this new service replaces the old station, which was operating on the frequency of 800 khz. Checking the FCC TIS site, it appears that the Midway Airport TIS is also moving to 1630 kHz from 800 kHz.
IBOC wrecks havoc on AM band at night
Last month the FCC has authorized the nightime usage of IBOC broadcasts. IBOC (In-band on-channel) is a method of transmitting digital radio and analog radio signals simultaneously on the same frequency. The use of this broadcasting method produces a lot of interference on adjacent frequencies of the frequency used by the radio station. This interference can span 20 kHz on either side of the nominal frequency. At night, distant stations on the AM band travel long distances thanks to sky wave propagation. Unfortunately the IBOC signals from the distant stations will also be received as interference on your receiver blocking the reception of the desired DX catch.

1630 WQHE741 IL CHICAGO, 9/30 1301, good with parking info for O'Hare Airport. This a new TIS for O'Hare. Not sure if the 800 kHz O'Hare TIS is gone, since the IBOC interferance from WBBM prevents me from hearing anything on 800 kHz in my location (I am only 4 miles from the WBBM transmitter). (NOTE: Recent visit to O'Hare International Airport revealed that the 800 kHz TIS is gone).
