Westford election: Wormell touts her 'track record' as incumbentLowell Sun -- May 1, 2008 WESTFORD -- Selectman Valerie Wormell says she offers a sense of order in her positions that complements her experience as a chemical engineer. When she talks about her re-election bid, Wormell says she offers voters a known commodity with a proven work ethic, but projecting the future, her goals also offer systematic solutions to problems. There are two seats available on the Board of Selectmen, and Wormell is running for a second term against Kelly Ross, Kirk Ware and Robert McCusker. Incumbent Dini Healy-Coffin is not seeking re-election. "I have a proven track record of serving the residents of this town," Wormell said. "I lobbied the Statehouse, knocking on Senate doors, and eventually came back to the town with $1.5 million to clean up the Abbot oil spill. It was the most unprecedented amount ever awarded by the state Legislature." She said she successfully petitioned then-Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey to reopen the Pleasant Street bridge in order to alleviate economic hardships for merchants in the area. Wormell takes credit for working with the rest of the board and Town Hall staff to write a policy of writing and then releasing minutes of meetings, then used the policy to release 20 years worth of minutes from executive sessions while she was board clerk in 2006-2007. "I have the ability to grasp bits and pieces from multiple disciplines ..." she said. "It makes me a very good engineer." Wormell said she wants to return to the board to help craft a budget that falls within the town's financial means. She is also hoping to complete work on a standard policy she's writing for serving on boards or committees. A policy for committee appointments will take the mystery out of joining, increasing the volunteer pool, Wormell said. "One of the responsibilities of the job that gives me the greatest pleasure is being able to help a resident solve their problem," she said. Home
