Val Wormell seeks reelection

Westford Eagle -- March 20, 2008

Valerie Wormell is seeking reelection for a second term to the Westford Board of Selectmen. Joining the Board in May 2005, Wormell served as clerk from 2006 to 2007 and chair from 2007 to the present.

Improving transparency in Board activities has been a top priority.   She succeeded in developing policy for Board minutes and released 20 years of executive session minutes.   Participating on the Selectmen’s Policies Subcommittee, she has worked tirelessly to reduce Board practices to writing so the public can better understand and follow the way business is disposed.  Valerie also worked to implement Web access to government and a Town public notification system.

Valerie has focused her efforts on the town’s infrastructure to help support the local economy.  She was instrumental in bringing Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healy to Westford in the fall of 2006 to view the problems caused by the stalled Pleasant Street Bridge project.  After years of inactivity the bridge was opened within months. She is strongly committed to shaping Westford’ future in positive, sensible ways serving on the town’s Comprehensive Master Plan Committee. Her focus is Economic Development and finding a balance between residential and commercial/industrial growth rates which ease the property tax burden of Westford’s homeowners without jeopardizing the traditional character of the town.

One of her strengths is capacity to address multiple disciplines.  The Abbot oil release threatened to create a major economic crisis for the town in 2005. With a chemical engineering background, Wormell has been a member of the Abbot oil mitigation team.  Actively participating in all clean up decisions, the remediation efforts are expected to be completed in half the time a spill of this magnitude would ordinarily result in. Wormell worked with and lobbied the state legislature for an unprecedented $1.5 million in relief funds to the Town.

Wormell sees a very bright future for Westford.  As a member of the Comprehensive Master Plan Committee, Long Range Fiscal Policy Committee and Selectmen’s Policy Subcommittee, she feels the groundwork for exciting change in the business of government has been forged.  “Local government is reflective and respects the rights and opinions of all citizenry.  Effective and lasting change does not happen overnight but through careful study and planning.  I look forward to the challenges of balancing the budget, improving public safety, providing a superior public school system and directing growth.”   She says opportunities exist for internal consolidation, regionalization and implementation of expedited permitting and development transfer rights.

She asks for your vote and support for another term.   With a seemingly boundless supply of energy, she responds to all residents through letters, emails and phone calls, no matter what he issue.  Her source of energy is her affection and respect for the town’s residents.   “It has been an honor and privilege to serve the community.  I truly appreciate the passion residents have shown for their convictions.”  For more information or to volunteer on her campaign, call 978-692-9643 or email her at votewormell@earthlink.net.
