I selected the Altec N1209-8A crossovers, since they're over 28 years old, I decided
to retrofit them with 5% tolerance Solen Fast Caps, and add a Zobel Network with Nichicon caps to stabilize the woofers ever
swinging impedance.
|
The N1209-8A crossover is nice because it has midrange and high frequency shelving
controls in a two-way crossover design. Now that the caps and new 2% tolerence non-indictive resistors are installed,
it's time to put the metal covers back on and install them in the factory 828 cabinets.

Update - May, 2006, I switched to the new Great Plains Audio 515-8LF rear
vented 16" woofers for the low-end, they weigh a ton and sound very much like the old alnico magnet Altec 515B woofers
of the past!!
|
I decided to use 511B horns, I dampened them with Cascade Quiet Kote to remove
any ringing, then selected Altec 902-8B compression drivers for the high-end.
|
|
I used the plastic horn mounts with sponge weather stripping on the bottoms to
eliminate any resonance from the bass section of the system, the mount also allows the horn to bolt right in behind the grill if
I decide to hide them.
|
The finished product!! I wanted to see how good a non-Alnico magnet system
would sound, I have to say they're a little brighter than the other Alnico magnet based systems I have, but they do sound
outstanding, especially with tube amps!! For a little extra kick in the high-end, I added EV ST-350A tweeters.
