In a convincing fashion, unseeded American Serena Williams
picked up her eighth grand slam title, by knocking out number one in the world Maria Sharapova,
6-1, 6-2.
The last time a match ended with such a lopsided finish was back in 1994 when the German legend
Steffi Graf defeated Arantxa Sanchez Vicario
of Spain, 6-0, 6-2.
When the rankings were released today, 25-year-old Williams' win skyrocketed her from 81st
place to 14th.
In a match that only lasted one hour and three minutes, the 19-year-old Russian was gracious
in defeat, despite tears courtside. There were tears from both sides when Williams dedicated her win to her slain sister Yetunde Price, who was shot four years ago in Compton, Los Angeles.
