In a year when there were no seeded American women tennis players in the Australian Open, James Blake was seeded higher than Andy Roddick, and the future of American tennis seeming to be on the decline, this year's tournament appears to have done an about-face.

Thanks, to the Bryan Brothers, Serena has some help with holding up the flag for her nation's tennis. The unseeded Serena Williams convincingly defeated Maria Sharapova to win the title, but fortunately she will have some compatriots to celebrate with as the twins took the doubles championships in straight sets fashion.

Eliminating Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman and Belarus' Max Myrni, 7-5, 7-5, the Mike and Bob Bryan went on to earn their second Australian Open title. This is their second major title at the same tournament, because the American doubles team had previously won each of the grand slams, but only once.

Auf Wiedersehen!

On Friday, January 20, 2007, 12th-seeded Tommy Haas bailed out of the Australian Open in straight sets by Chile's Fernando Gonzalez whose seeded tenth in this tournament and currently ranked 9 in the world. In 91 minutes, Gonzalez was able to dismantle the German's game, which was riddled with unforced errors, while his Gonzalez unbelievably made only three for the entire match!

In the end, there may be some good news for Tommy Haas after all. Next week when the ATP ratings come out, Haas' efforts will be rewarded when his rankings will jump up into the top ten again for him. Viel Glueck! Next up for the Chilean, is the omnious task of trying to defeat defending champion Roger Federer, a man who has not dropped a single set in route of earning his tenth major title. The pair are scheduled to meet up down in Melbourne on Sunday, January 28, 2007.
