Summary
This competition received much attention and interest from the AAAI
community, and will be continued in future years. If you would like to
serve on its Program Committee (reviewing these videos is a lot
easier, and often more fun, than reviewing written submissions), or
have any questions, please contact David W. Aha (david dot aha at nrl
dot navy dot mil). We're especially interested in receiving notice of
planned video submissions so that we can ensure that we have enough PC
members to review (and vote on) them.
Announcement of Awards
Trophies, named Shakeys after SRI's pioneering robot, were
announced and presented by Co-Chairs Sebastian Thrun and David W. Aha
for the following category winners at the AAAI-07 AI Video
Competition's Awards Ceremony, which took place on 23 July 2007 at
AAAI-07 in the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver (BC), Canada. The winners
also received a monetary award. The nominees for these categories are
identified in the
list of accepted videos.
Approximately 200 people attended the awards ceremony. The winners for
Best Video, Best Short, and Best Student video were in attendance and
gave brief acceptance speeches, while pre-recorded video acceptance
speeches were provided by the winners of the other categories. Thanks
to everyone for their help, and congratulations to all!

Description
AAAI solicits submissions for a new online video competition. The goal
of this competition is to communicate to the World how much fun AI
(research and application) is and, in particular, to document exciting
research and applications using artificial intelligence. The rules are
simple: Compose a short video about an exciting AI project, and
narrate it in a way that makes your video accessible to a broad online
audience. Accepted videos will be displayed in the AAAI-07
registration area on Monday, 23 July. During that evening's session
(co-timed and nearby the location of the AAAI-07 reception), the
developers of the best videos will be presented with awards. We
strongly encourage student participation. This is your chance to make
a cool online video about your AI research and/or application, and get
a ton of attention!
Video Formats
Either 1 minute (max) short video or a 5 minute (max) long video,
with narration in English (or English subtitles). Consider combining
screen shots, interviews, and video of a system in action. Make the
video self-contained, so that newcomers to AI can understand and learn
from it. We encourage a good sense of humor, though we will only
accept submissions with serious AI content. Your video might cover
contemporary research, or document seminal AI research in the
past. Creativity is encouraged!
Submissions
Submission: Submit your video to a publicly-accessible www site & notify the co-chairs by email:
- David W. Aha: david.aha at nrl dot navy dot mil
- Sebastian Thrun: thrun at stanford dot edu
Submitted videos must not contain any copyrighted video, audio, or
characters. Developers of accepted videos will be asked to sign
release and copyright forms.
AAAI Copyright and Release Forms
Authors of accepted videos were requested to sign and FAX these forms to AAAI (+1 650-321-4457) or email
electronically signed copies to AAAI (info7contact at aaai dot org) per the instructions
on this page.
- Copyright form
- Photo Release form
- The authors of videos need to collect this form from anyone
they feel is necessary. In many cases, it may not be
necessary. The copyright form makes it incumbent upon the
author to assure that the work is original throughout and that
all permissions have been gathered by the author. Video
authors should gather these releases from people who appear in
their videos if this type of release is not already
administered by their institutions.
Key Dates
- Submission Deadline: 16 June 2007
- Reviewing Decisions: 2 July 2007
- Announcement of Accepted Videos (on competition's www site): 13 July 2007
- Screening and Award Presentations: 23 July 2007
Reviewing
The submitted videos will each be reviewed by a subset of the program committee, whose
names are listed below. The reviewing criteria include (from most to least-weighted)
- Relevance to AI (research and/or application)
- Degree of excitement: Entertainment value, enticing, novelty, etc.
- Educational content
- Understandable to novices
- Presentation
Awards
Up to $3000 will be awarded in prizes to the best videos in each category,
including a Shakey: a small trophy named in honor of Shakey.

Inspirations
Initial discussions towards this event took place at the March 2007
meeting of the AAAI Executive Council. Inspirations for this event
include, in addition to the availability of videos at popular www
sites, existing AAAI competitions, the AAAI
Video Virtual Archive Project, and early videos of Shakey, a robot developed by SRI that is an inductee
in the Robot Hall of Fame.
