MINUTES
23 October 2001

Senators Present: 9, 10, 12, IR, MV, MD, SD, FR; JM

Proxies Present: AH for 11, MG for TA

The 16 October minutes were ratified (9-0)

IR moved that a tetherball court be placed in or around Wissner Courtyard.
Arguments for included that a tetherball game would allow for bonding; that there is a need for more recreational activities for students; and personal elementary school experience of tetherball's popularity. Arguments against included that classes might be disrupted and that a tetherball pole might detract from the beauty of the courtyard. The motion was withdrawn.

The Senate discussed the possibility of publishing a photo directory of students at the beginning of each school year. There was some question as to whether creating a directory would be worth the time, effort, and money that it would take. Suggestions for minimizing these expenses included publishing on the web and publishing a limited number of books to be used at school as reference. It was wondered whether the existence of such a directory would reduce the number of introductions made between students. Possibilities mentioned regarding the scope of a photo directory were: the freshman class, the upper school, and the entire school. No conclusion was reached.

It was suggested that the Senate devise a method of publishing the minutes before its next weekly meeting. Mailboxes and email were mentioned as possible ratification methods, but it was pointed out that a meeting of an entire body is necessary for minutes to be ratified. The possibility of publishing unratified minutes was raised. Several senators objected with the argument that official minutes come from a body, not from an individual. It was asked if minutes of a meeting could be ratified at the end of the meeting to which they refer. The secretary pointed out that the minutes are not yet written at the end of the meeting to which they refer. The possibility of holding a special meeting to ratify minutes was explored. No conclusion was reached.

Class representatives reported the response that their respective classes had to the potential for a student judiciary committee. All classes wished to have more information than was available at the poll. No class was opposed to the idea.

The chair informed the Senate that the resolution passed on 16 October regarding a cash register display in the Commons would likely be vetoed.

Respectfully Submitted,
