16 October 2001
Senators Present: 9, 10, 12, IR, MV, TA, MD, SD, FR,
JM
Proxies Present: AH for 11
The 9 October minutes were ratified (8-0)
12: I move that the Senate recommend that the Commons purchase a cash register system that displays the amount deducted from a lunch card
account at teach purchase.
The suggestion of posting a price list was made in the ensuing debate.
The motion passed (6-3)
10: I move that the space inside of Wissner be used to display student artwork.
It was mentioned that there exists the Art in Public Places committee of the school's Board of Trustees. It was suggested that students and the math,
science, and technology faculties be involved in any decoration of Wissner. The motion failed (3-4).
A request for bike racks in the upper school was voiced by the Senate.
The Senate continued the discussion it began at its last meeting about seating in Benaroya Theatre. There was question as to the purpose of sitting in
advisories. Suggestions for increasing the number of students sitting in advisory groups included: each advisor calling out missing advisees, each
advisory holding a recognizable sign, and ushers. The idea of each advisory holding a recognizable sign was approved by general consent and will be brought
up at a faculty meeting.
Discussion about a dress code was next on the agenda. The issue was postponed to a date when its sponsor is in attendance.
It was suggested in the Senatorial discussion that students be included on hiring search committees for term-long substitutes.
Discussion about the role of the Senate began. It was questioned whether all issues were appropriate for the Senate to discuss.
IR reported on the progress of his research into other schools' student judiciary committees: he is waiting for phone calls to be returned.
A representative from Deerfield Academy gave the Senate a brief description of the ways the student judiciary committee works at Deerfield:
The decisions of students are respected and the committee's decision can be overruled by the faculty. Sometimes the students recommend a harsher punishment
than the faculty; sometimes vice versa.
The Senators will gather opinions about the formation of a student judiciary committee at Bush from the bodies they represent.
Respectfully Submitted,
