New BusinessSuggestions were made for using the remaining portion of the Senate's budget for this year, and a reminder was issued that a request form must be turned in within a week to be considered.
Grading PhilosophyThe usage of grades, rather than comments, at Bush was questioned. College admissions offices like grades because they are a quantitative measure. There is a dichotomy at Bush-is it a college prep school or a progressive school? There was disagreement about whether the pressure implied by grades is a good thing or a bad thing. It was pointed out that teaching style would be different did grades not exist. Another alternative would be for instructors to give grades, but not to have them publicized until senior year, but that would require a major culture change in the school.

Discussion then turned to the standardization of grades at Bush.
Motion (9):That the Senate recommend that each of the faculty departments carefully discuss various issues around what makes a C, B, A, etc. and reach a consensus as to the quality of work that merits each grade.
It was suggested that students be involved in setting standards for a class. The merits and drawbacks of curve grading were talked about. It was recommended that the statistics of grades awarded in individual courses, departments, and by individual teachers be analyzed. There was a reminder that grades are about a student's work, not about a student.

The pending motion passed (8-0)

Respectfully Submitted,
