Here's a scene that looks like it could be straight out of a Discovery Channel special! First thing in the morning on the second day of safari we came across this incredible scene. Two lionesses had killed a cape buffalo sometime during the night. When we arrived the lionesses were already stuffed and basking in the sun. The vultures and hyenas were taking over... |
We came across several elephants. The bulls (adult males) are loners, but the females hang out in their clans. In this case the mother is obviously shielding her baby... It probably would not have been a good scene if our guide had moved our van any closer! During a different encounter, one elephant did begin to snort and stomp at us. Needless to say our guide got us out of there quickly. |

Yes, the male lions act just as you hear... Lazy! They try to find some shade to sleep in... ALL DAY! That's about it. They don't know fear, of course (who's going to prey on lions?) and so they walk right up to the vans. One just walked right by us just casually looking at us. No big deal. A lot of the prey animals (antelopes, zebras, giraffes) are much more skitterish and unapproachable. |
One of my favorites... This isn't on safari, but it's still in Kenya. This is a picture of me feeding a giraffe. They have looooong, slobbery tongues. There are sinks down below to wash up afterwards! This is not a zoo... the giraffes come and go as they please. They come around, though, because it's free food! Why not? |
