Life sometimes gives us experiences that
we'd rather not have. Our son, Eric developed insulin dependent diabetes (Type I) when he was a young adult and has made
living with a chronic illness appear easy. In April 2005, our 6 year old dog, Starz, had excessive thirst and urination. A
quick trip to our vet confirmed the diagnosis of diabetes. Starz has adjusted well to insulin twice a day and home blood sugar
testing. Our experience with our son's diabetes has given us a base of knowledge that helped us step up to the plate quickly
when Starz was diagnosed. Our knowledgeable veterinarian along with support from others <http://www.petdiabetes.org/ > with diabetic pets helped us gain control of her diabetes and avoid complications.
Starz, who loves being a working breed, now
carries her own back pack on hiking trips, filled with water, karo syrup, dog bones and insulin!
