A Trip to Death Valley 2001

Death Valley is a large collection of rocks and rock formations. Since Scott is a closet Geology guy, we had a great time investigating them all. The white sections of these rocks were so brilliant in contrast to the rest of the desert.

As you drive into the valley, you pass 0 ft. elevation frequently. Here is a ranger station located at 0ft.

Due to the high winds and various terain, sand collects at different areas of the park. Here are the sand dunes closest to the ranger station above.

And to continue with the weird fascination we have with volcano craters, here is Uhbehebe crater. A few hundreds of thousands of years ago, a crack in the earth's crust allowed lava to flow up slightly. This lava met an underground stream. Super heated steam blew out the side of the volcano.

And then, of course, you must have the local mansion.

A 20-mule team equipment. The compound Boron was mined in Death Valley. To get it out, the used a team of 20 mule. They would carry about 16 tons of stuff out over 150 miles.

 Mustard canyon

Devil's golfcourse

Badwater. The lowest elevation in the US is here. The lowest point is actuall 282 feet below sea level, but it was a 1 mile walk out in the heat, so we decided this was close enough.

and then back home.
