Welcome to my butterfly area.
Here I'll be listing some of my own data, as well as providing links
to other butterfly related pages. In addition, I will provide
information on some of the many butterfly books and field guides on
the market today, and provide discount purchasing links to them at
Amazon.com whenever available. Please feel free to e-mail comments
about any of the books listed, or to let me know about others you
might be aware of. I'll be happy to publish your comments, as this is
a great way for others to find out about available
resources.
Below are some links to interesting and useful Butterfly Stuff. Please feel free to suggest any additional ones.
I started putting this list together
several years ago. It lists only plants that occur in the
Washington, DC area that are recorded as caterpillar
hostplants for Washington, DC area butterflies. It will
probably never be complete.
Below I have listed a few field guides and other items that I think
are good ones to have. If you have any other suggestions, want to
send me a review of any of them, or have ANY other comments. please
e-mail me. I want this page to be convenient and USEFUL!

This is one of the best field guides for the northeast region of the
U.S., and is even very applicable to much of the Eastern United
States as a whole. Its size allows it to be carried easily into the
field, and its clear photos allow for easy identification. It is my
guide of choice for my area...the one I carry with me into the
field.
Jeffrey Glassgerg, "Butterflies
Through Binoculars: Butterflies of the East" 416
pages. This book is very similar to Glassberg's
earlier book (above), but has a much wider coverage. Many
very good photographs, and a managable size for carting
about with you when you're out. Click

The Butterflies of North America: A
Natural History and Field Guide, by Dr. James A. Scott
(Paperback). List price $39.95 Amazon price $31.96 This is probably the best buttefly book
on the market today, in my humble opinion. It had very
detailed descriptions of the butterflies, their habitats,
hostplants, larvae, etc., and has photographs of mounted
specimens. I use mine all the time.

The Butterflies of West Virginia and
Their Caterpillars (Pitt Series in Nature and Natural
History), by Thomas J. Allen. 350 pages. List price $22.95
Amazon price $18.36 This is a GREAT book for caterpillars, as
well as pupae and adults. As far as I know, it is the most
comprehensive identification book available so far for
larvae. It is applicable to a much wider range than just
West Virginia, and should be in every serious butterflier's
collection of reference material. Click
