What is Propecia?

Finasteride is a drug produced by Merck under the name Propecia. It was originally prescribed to treat benign prostate enlargement (BPH) by shutting down the enzyme that converts the hormone testosterone into a different form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which, in turn, causes prostate tissue to grow. DHT has the opposite effect on hair folicles, shrinking them. By reducing DHT production, fiansteride appears to halt the process.

In fact, most balding men who currently take the drug have experienced noticeable improvement on their pates, but not elsewhere on their bodies. Finasteride has few side effects.
