Joseph came to Mascoutah, Illinois from Germany in 1860 at age 28. He served the Union in the 43th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Crescentia immigrated from Switzerland with her sister, Bertha about 1873 at age 28. Joseph and Crescentia were married on February 19, 1874 in Mascoutah. Sometime before June 1900 they moved to the city of St. Charles in St. Charles County, Missouri. Joseph died in St. Charles on April 17, 1902 at age 69 and sometime thereafter Crescentia returned to the Mascoutah area. She died in Mascoutah on February 6, 1905 at age 59.

As a young adult he designed and build railroad car interiors for a company in St. Charles, Missouri. His work took him to Palisades, Colorado where he met and latter married Hanna Catherine Mueller in March 1905 in Palisade, Colorado.
Hanna was born in Millstadt, Illinois only a few miles from Mascoutah. When she was about 12 years old both her parents died. Her Uncle William Hermann was living in Grand Junction, Colorado and sometime around 1900 at the age of about 19 she moved to that area. Hanna died on March 18, 1911 in Grand Junction, Colorado at the young age of 30. Robert and his daughter Irene moved about out west to places like Twin Falls, Idaho before returning to Belleville, Illinois sometime before 1920.
Robert married Margaret Liebig in Belleville. He worked as a carpenter and construction contractor in that area until his death on March 10, 1929 at the age of about 55 from a head injuries suffered when he fell off a second story roof.
