The Short Family

Doug's Genealogy

Short Generation # 8

1.     Aaron Short; parents unknown
         Sarah (-?-); parents unknown

Aaron and his wife, Sarah were born say around 1740. The birth dates are based on the assumption that Aaron was an adult in 1759 when he appears on the Rowan County, North Carolina tax list. The couple's children were born between 1762-1774.

The parents of Aaron and Sarah are unknown at this time. Many of the residence of frontier North Carolina came down the Great Wagon Road from the likes of Virginia and Pennsylvania. The speculation is that they came from the north.

A Moses Short and his family lived close and was allied with the Aaron Short family. Although not proven, Moses and Aaron were probably brothers or otherwise closely related.

Aaron died sometime before November 13, 1779. On that date his wife, Sarah Short is listed on a Guilford County deed record as an owner of an adjacent parcel on Buffalo Creek. On October 14, 1783 the widow Sarah Short purchased property jointly with some of her children (William, Moses & Aaron) just 15-20 miles north of the Buffalo Creek on Trouble Creek in Rockingham County. Around the same time the widow Sarah Short purchased property with her younger children; (Jonathan & Samuel) along Buffalo Creek in Guilford County.

Lavicia Emmons; Emmons Family daughter of Julius Emmons & Levisey Robinett

Jane Lewis - daughter of Daniel & Abigail Lewis; b. abt 1827; m. Squire Short; d. abt 1853
Anthony [Cuddy] Wall - parents unknown; m. Lavicia Short nee Emmons d. bet 1900-1910

Squire Woodford Short was born in 1826. His father died in the same year. His mother, Nancy Ann Bay married Daniel Prather on March 15, 1827 in Franklin County, Missouri. He was raised in the Prather family. On January 29, 1846 he married Jane Lewis, daughter of Daniel and Abigail Lewis. Interestingly Jane Lewis' sister, Rebecca married Squire's Uncle Jesse Short. Jesse and Rebecca turn up in Collin County, Texas, just north of present day Dallas sometime before 1850.

Another of Squire's uncles, Joseph and his wife Irene Boyd along with their children moved to the same area. Sometime after 1850 Joseph's family moved south to Lampasas County, Texas, about 50 miles north of Austin. Joseph died in 1852 leaving a wife and six children.

Squire's wife Jane died in Missouri in 1852. He next married the teenage Lavicia Emmons on March 20, 1853. She inherited the mother role for Jane's five children. Squire proceeded to sell his property in Lonedell area of Franklin County and move his family to Texas. On October 23, 1856 he purchased 160 acres of property in Lampasas County, Texas about 50 miles north of Austin. The property was surveyed by his Uncle Joseph's son and son-in-law on January 29, 1857. He sold the property on September 8, 1857. Whether he ever lived on the property is subject to debate. Inspite of much family lore, where the family actually lived in Texas remains a mystery. Squire died about 1860. His still young wife was left stranded in Texas with seven living children. From a book written by a descendant of Lavicia Emmons' sister, a Robert Denny and one of Jane Lewis' brothers came from Missouri to "fetch them back to the neighborhood."

On December 16, 1860 a Franklin County court appointed Jane Lewis' brother, Joshua Lewis the guardian of her four surviving children. Squire's three children from the second marriage were presumably raised by their mother, Lavicia Emmons. She later married Anthony [Cuddy] Wall and had three children with him. Lavicia Wall died on October 23, 1923 in Washington County, Missouri.
