Doug's Genealogy

Much of the information on generations 12 through 10 is from these two excellent books:

Jõran Kyn was born between 1617 and 1620 in Saxony. His name was originally Jürgen Schneeweiss but he later used the more Swedish Kyn and Kühn. Sweden established a colony called New Sweden in the New World along the Delaware River in 1638. In a well documented voyage, Jõran left Gothenburg, Sweden on November 11, 1642 as a mercenary in the Swedish military guard assigned to the new Governor Printz. The group sailed on two ships, Fama and Swan. They spent Christmas in Antigua and arrived at Fort Christina, New Sweden on February 15, 1643.

In the years that followed Jõran became a settler in what was then called Upland. It later became Chester Co., Pennsylvania. He saw the colony pass from Swedish to Dutch control then to British. By the time William Penn reached the New World in 1682 Jõran was elderly but still living.

Sarah Harper Harper Family daughter of Joseph Harper and Sarah (-?-); b. June 12, 1717 in Oxford Township, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania; m. Matthias Keen; living in 1754

Sarah Harper's brother, Robert Harper was prominent in the early development of the area in Berkeley Co., VA where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers meet. Among other things Robert ran the ferry business. That area was known as the Hole but latter took Robert name and became Harper's Ferry. It is now part of Jefferson Co., WV and is the site of a national park.

The 1747 will of Joseph Harper names his "daughter Sarah wife of Matthias Keen" as co-executor. Matthias Keen and at least some of his children moved from Philadephia to the Harper's Ferry area sometime before 1780. There is no known evidence that his wife Sarah accompanied him or was living when he made the move. Matthias' brother-in-law, Robert Harper died childless in 1782 and his will bequeathed 300 acres of land to his nephew, Joseph Keen and a share of the proceeds from the sale of "my Negroe Wench Beck" to various nephews including Jonas, Israel and Hezekiah Keen.
