Fran's Update

FRIDAY, JULY 13, 2007 07:03 PM, CDT
Dear Family and Friends who could not be here for these last 2 days, We want you to know how your presence was felt during Fran's wake, funeral and burial. All the little ones who were present were given flowers to pass out to everyone and to put into Fran's grave. They were so cute and felt so important. Even at such a sad time one could not help but smile. Fran must have loved it. The top of her vault was decorated with her picture being held in God's hands, surrounded by her beloved angels. Her Mass was just as she planned, with so many voices lifted together in song. It was heartwarming to see so many there last night, too. We are sure your prayers continue to get us through these very hard days and the ones yet to come. We know Fran is with God in the way she longed for, and are happy for her. But one cannot lose a wife, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend such as Fran without feeling a terrible void. We know that now Fran is interceding for all of us and you for all the love and support you have shown. May God grant us all peace and comfort as we say our farewells to this beautiful woman of God.

Dear Friends, things have become very quiet here now. Late this afternoon Sister Pauline and I will be returning to Bloomington to prepare for two funerals before Fran's. Jeanie is moving her motorhome to another site today. So this will be the first time that Keith will be all alone since his beloved Fran's death. I hope you will continue to reach out to him as beautifully as you have been doing while Fran still lived here. She leaves a huge void. His biggest comfort are the little visits that carried us all through for these past weeks; I hope you will continue to stop by. Check this site tomorrow for times and addresses for Fran's Wake and Funeral.

SATURDAY, JULY 07, 2007 12:42 PM, CDT
Dear family and friends, we want to thank you for the beautiful expressions of sympathy that began flowing in as you read of Fran's death. We wish you could have all witnessed the loving preparation of her body according to Fran's wishes. She wanted to be dressed in her pretty pink (of course!) pajamas and we covered her with the lovely white and pink quilt given by friends. Fran laid there clutching the Benedictine cross from which she had drawn such strength throughout this 7-year struggle with cancer. She had a sweet, gentle smile on her face, and her new pink hair was brushed just the way she liked it. It was a truly holy and sacred time as friends came in to say their good-byes and offer their comfort. It was all that Fran had wanted, and I think she was proud of us as we honored her request. Somewhere around 12:30 this morning, Keith and Gene, Fran's Dad, carried her and laid her on the cot brought by her friend who is also her funeral director, and we all helped roll her gently down the ramp of her beloved deck into the van. Her loving presence was papable. We know now that her wake will definitely be this next Friday and her funeral and burial on Saturday, while exact times are yet to be planned. There will be a notice in the paper later this week, and we will put the information on CaringBridge too. Friends and family are invited to come anytime today and throughout the week. Just be sure to call so you know somoeone is at home. Remain blessed.

FRIDAY, JULY 06, 2007 07:40 PM, CDT
To all of Fran's family and to all of you, her loving friends...our dear Fran passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus a little over 10 minutes ago. We knew at 4:00 this afternoon that she was in the final hours of her holy journey. Keith was lying beside her and her Mom and Dad were here. So were her dear Aunts Jackie and Janet. Sister Pauline made it back from Mankato and Fran and Keith's special neighbors, Pastor Dan and his wife Judy led us in singing and Fran into a calm and peaceful letting go. Fr. DeGroot prayed the prayers of commendation which seemed to calm her, too, and allowed her to let go. Her last moments were filled with slow gentle breaths until she boarded that train she's been waiting for. We have all be preparing ourselves for this moment, but, of course, how can we be truly ready for that last sweet breath? Yet, we all believe and give testimony to our faith that Fran is now in flight with all of her angels whom she loved so well in this life. And we believe she will be welcomed into the wide waiting arms of our God. We also believe we shall see her again in the land of the living. For those of you who have been worrying, Fran's dream of a Saturday funeral when more of her family and friends can attend will come true.We believe at this moment she will be honored and buried on next Saturday, the 14th of July, but of course no arrangements have been made yet. We will let you know when all is planned.

How can we ever thank you for accompanying us on this journey all along, but especially during these past 3 weeks. Your physical presence was such a joy to Fran and Keith and your spiritual support was so felt. Thank you all. And may our gentle God help each of you who loved her as you receive this message.

FRIDAY, JULY 06, 2007 04:38 PM, CDT
There's really nothing new to report except that, once again, Fran's short breaths are coming faster and there are other physical signs of further weakness and poorer circulation, all a part of a body's shutting down process. It is quiet here now; but our Fran still hears so we keep talking to her about all of you.

Sister Judy

FRIDAY, JULY 06, 2007 09:15 AM, CDT
Once again we thank God for an entire night of sleep for Fran and all of us. The longer lasting meds mean that Keith didn't have to wake her during the night to medicate her. Sleep makes such a difference in one's life that you don't realize until you haven't had any. Fran is still able to hear us and tries to do anything we ask her by relaxing muscles or biting down on the moistened sponges which makes it easier for her and us. It's so hard to see her register pain. Over the night Fran's breathing pattern has taken a new turn. Her breaths are coming more often and are a lot more shallow than yesterday. Communion is coming to her now as she moves more deeply into the final steps of her jouney. Let's all walk this day with her and one another. Fran would love that idea, wouldn't she? Remain blessed.

Sister Judy

THURSDAY, JULY 05, 2007 08:37 PM, CDT
I assure you we are much more careful about our care of Fran than I am at proofreading. This evening there is really nothing new to report. While here today her hospice nurse showed another way to get the long-lasting pain meds into her which should keep her even more comfortable. Fran seems to understand when we tell her what we are going to do. She is so patient with us. Mom Jeanie has gone off for some sleep herself. And dear Keith will be beside Fran again tonight. He can get some rest too, because we are able to control the pain, and Fran has been able to sleep through the past two nights. Thank you for another day of your support.

Sister Judy Frucci, SSND

THURSDAY, JULY 05, 2007 01:24 PM, CDT
Fran's heart continues to beat and so she remains in a comfortable sleep. Kind neighbors helped us today to lift her completely off of her bed to get fresh bedding under her with as little movement as possible. We tell her we are going to move her and why, and that we know it might hurt. Momentarily she registers pain but then resumes her deep sleep. Her hospice nurse was here at that time and led us through the process, so that we felt secure in all that moving. We are trying so hard to keep her pain free. Afterwards her nurse whispered something in Fran's ear that made her smile Maybe she was telling Fran how clusmsy we can be sometimes. We keep thanking God for this restful sleep for Fran, . It seems like her death is going to be a matter between her and the God who loves her so much. Boy, we would would love to listen in on their conversations! We continue to feel th sacred the sacred presence of so many in that room with us. Again you messages touch us deeply, and we are strengthened by your prayers. In that way you are all participating actively in this caretaking we do. We know there are literaly hundreds of you out there holding us up, so we can continue surrounding her with our love and care. May God bless all of you. Fran would be so proud to know how you are carrying all of us. We keep telling her about you all the time.

Sister Judy Frucci, SSND

WEDNESDAY, JULY 04, 2007 06:12 PM, CDT
Wednesday evening –

The hospice helper and the hospice nurse were here today. Fran now has a catheter and medication that melts in her mouth. No more trying to get Fran to swallow medication with her favorite orange pop and no more attempts at getting her to the bathroom. Too much commotion for her confused little body. She now has permission to rest peacefully.

And rest is what she has been doing all day. She looks so peaceful and the fighting has stopped (as of this afternoon). Hopefully the night will continue with peaceful rest. Fran is getting the best of care, full of love and support. She would be so proud of all of us.

The 4th of July is 3/4’s of the way over and I think Fran will have her special day all to herself. Enjoy the fireworks and think of us. We are focusing on Fran but we think of all of you too.

Happy 4th of July and may God speed.

Aunt Janet

WEDNESDAY, JULY 04, 2007 08:28 AM, CDT
Wednesday morning -

Fran is still with us. Still taking her medication orally. Still wanting to get to the bathroom. Although these tasks are very difficult because Fran’s body won't do what she wants it to do. What ever Fran wants is given to her. Keeping her comfortable with pillows and medication. With family by her bedside, Long hours are spent. Keith re-assuring her that he is right there lying next to her. Mom and family watch vigilantly for any help that can be offered. Her massage music continues to play bringing a soothing atmosphere. Today is the 4th of July and our Country will celebrate its freedom from England. The Constitution was born and a new Nation. Today might be the day Fran breaks free and is born into a new life in heaven. Then again, she may just want to stick around for the Nations celebration and celebrate her own new life on a different day.

Fran announced last night there are no free rides. Get out. As if she is still riding the train to heaven.

Aunt Janet

TUESDAY, JULY 03, 2007 10:11 PM, CDT
As another day comes to an end we are gathered at Fran's bedside. Her breathing has become very shallow with very long breaks in between every few breaths. Her body is showing the physical signs that usually occur for a few hours before death. One wonders if she will wait until the 4th to leave amid celebrations and fireworks across the land. It would be just like her, wouldn't it. We are begging Jesus to come for this woman of God, this woman of faith and hope, of love and compassion, of fire and spunk...truly a woman of Spirit. Now we try to stay awake and watch as this precious gift that God has shared with so many of us boards that train, glory bound. May God's merciful love take her to himself soon. Pray with us.

TUESDAY, JULY 03, 2007 04:27 PM, CDT
Okay... so I put the update time as if it were night and the computer itself had the time incorrect, too... But I really did it this morning! We have just gotten our electricity back on after being in the dark. (storm...VERY dark!) which certainly helps to care for Fran better. In the middle of the storm she started to sit up and told me "we have to go to the Gap!" I explained that we were having a heavy rain so we'd have to go later, and that made her lie back on her bed. Our precious friend still "going shopping" 'til the end! For awhile she thought we were in a deep flood, saying "It's too bad we have to have a flood." This was because Keith mentioned there was a little flood of water at the bottom of their deck's ramp. So our Fran may seldom respond to anyone anymore, she is not in a coma; she seems to hear everything unless she is sleeping deeply. A few friends stopped by and spent a few moments with her, but except for staring at them, she did not address them. She continues to ward off any touches except Keith unless she has to be lifted to shift her in her bed. She has not mentioned the train since early morning other than to say she hoped it knew the way. We assured her that Jesus knows the way, and he's driving the train. Her response was, "well, then I guess it;s okay" She continues to surprise us with her remarks although many of them don't seem to make sense to us. But then she may be talking to someone else... She has had some restlessness, so your prayers for an easy birthing from the womb of this earth into a whole new world of eternal life are so appreciated. Thank you again for the supportive messages on caring bridege. They really mean so much to Keith. We are not reading them to Fran now because she's not terribly interested in hearing our voices any more than is necessary. That finger that says "Stop!" still functions well. May you all remain blessed for your faithfulness and encouragement. The days are very long now. We feel you with us.

TUESDAY, JULY 03, 2007 09:06 AM, CDT
Tuesday, July 3, 2007 11:15p.m.

After a quiet night our Fran woke up enough to announce that the train is coming now. She continues to not want to be touched by anyone besides Keith, unless she needs help. She also asked to have her clothing removed, saying that "I won't need them where I'm going." This her third day without nourishment and only enough water to get down her pills. She is weaker than ever. It it hard on all of us to see her try to touch her own nose and not be able to hold up her arm, trying deterninedly several times before she stops. Her breathing is more shallow, and she more "there" than her. We wonder with whom she hums when she begins to do so. Some friends came today, and it is Making Keith feel a little better with their moral support. Again, all are welcome to visit on the deck. Following hospice's strong suggestion, we are allowing people in for moment or two, but asking everyone not to touch her or talk to her. We hope we can continue to let this happen, but quite frankly, some people do try to touch her anyway or talk to her, which she finds very annoying which then, of course, upsets her loving family. She continues on the journey and we are there for her and able to go on because of all the prayer and love we feel coming our way. Thank you so much.

MONDAY, JULY 02, 2007 09:31 PM, CDT
Monday, July 2, 9:35p.m.

After a very restless day, Fran is sleeping soundly. There has been a lot of confusion in her eyes today. There are moments when she makes statements ("I need some time off") or asks questions like "How will I get out of here?" and "Who's going to take care of me there?" It's hard to tell for sure if Fran always knows where she is. She has had no food at all today and only took in enough fluids to get her medications down. There has been a very obvious weakening of her strength from this morning to this evening, and she can barely offer any help in lifting herself into a wheelchair when she wants to sit up. Sitting up for any time on the edge of her bed, insisting on no help, Fran makes us hold our breath making sure she doesn't fall. Keith and Jeanie have taken such loving care of her today as they, too, do their own letting-go. Please pray with us now for a quick end to this part of the journey and to start her new journey with the Lord.

MONDAY, JULY 02, 2007 11:31 AM, CDT
Monday, July 2, 2007 11:32a.m.

Fran continues to rest in a deep peaceful sleep now after sitting up on her own twice this morning. She forgets that she no longer can walk without a lot of help. If you have been reading the updates for the last few days you know that Fran is seeing that the final journey to Jesus' house is going to be by train. Yesterday she knew that, too, but had a long list of people whom she wanted to ride along in the caboose, so she would get off at the right place. Today she announced she doesn't need anybody to be in the caboose; she is ready to get on the train by herself now. She obviously has made peace with herself and been given the comfort she needed to go on the final journey alone. We are so grateful to God. But our Fran, when awake, is still describing images and giving orders! This morning when her mom came in Fran was humming softly to herself, so Mom joined in with another song. Fran pointed a finger that we all recognize as "stop!" and continued to hum her own song. She's also pointed to someone and told us "When he comes, he always brings a harp." followed by the admonition to us" no swear words!" We suspect Fran is somewhere between here and Jesus and is seeing so much more that we can. Today it's just been Mom and Keith and I, except for a brief visit from one of the hospice nurses. We are awaiting the Eucaharist. Keith had asked her if she wanted communion today-no answer-then he said The Body of Christ-Fran's eyes opened wide and nodded yes, saying "The Body of Christ". Yesterday was the first day she struggled to swallow the entire host, so today we will try to give her a smaller piece. Yesterday Fran ate only 3 raspberries all day. Your continued loving support and prayer mean so much to everyone, and are making Fran's room a very sacred place. Friends are welcome to visit with the family on the deck, because your presence is needed comfort for family.

Sister Judy Frucci, SSND

SUNDAY, JULY 01, 2007 08:29 PM, CDT
Sunday night

It has been a long day sitting by Fran's bed. She did make it out to the deck for a brief time today. Since about 1:00 this afternoon she is sleeping very sound and taking shallow breaths. She has sat up twice during that time but her eyes are glazed over and she has taken sips of water to wash down medication. We are playing her massage music that seems to sooth her and relax the family. Prayers continue to be said on a daily basis with her and by her bedside.

Only God knows the schedule for the train that Fran is on.

We think of all of you who have done so much. We feel your love and support. Keep sending the strength that we need to see this through. We have all done our very best to focus on Fran's needs giving her lots of Love and tenderness.

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Aunt Janet

SUNDAY, JULY 01, 2007 09:26 AM, CDT
This morning has been a real joy for all of us. Fran and Keith spent the night on her bed enjoying conversation between just the two of them. Fran is now clear on what her plans are. She is going to be picked up by a train, which she has mentioned in the recent days, and this train will have a caboose to hold her family and friends. She intends to get off at heaven and the rest of us will stay on the caboose to come back and finish our work. She has been singing "Here I Come Lord" and has been very clear and deliberate about what is going on. This is very different from last night when she was very agitated, disorientated, and asking lots of questions. She was unsure where she was, and was seeing things like smoke in the corner. Today, all is clear to her, and she is at at peace with her plans and is ready to catch the train. Jeanie

SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 2007 06:38 PM, CDT
Saturday night update

Fran’s morning was very disoriented not believing she was in her bed and not understanding what was going on. Why were there so many people around her bed? It was a short-lived spell followed by slumber most of the day. A nice body wash and fresh pajamas produce a spell of thinking she was in a nursing home and lots of tears. Mom was a huge support convincing her that we were there to take care of her in her own home and we were doing a good job at it. The Priest honored Fran again and gave the blessing of the sick. Earlier she received communion as she has been doing on a daily bases. Slumber once again took over. Late afternoon produced a spurt of determination that she was going to get out of bed and walk to the bathroom by herself. When she is determined she can move fast for a listless person. Realizing she couldn’t stand on her own, her first yell was for Keith. She saw family members on the deck, and again, was determined to walk on her own to the deck. (“On her own” being held up by Keith) The confusion continued on the deck with so many family members but Keith was a calming factor holding on to her as she sat on the pop cooler by choice. Fifteen minutes passed and it was time to come in again convinced that this was not her bed. Keith sat with her, holding her and talked about her journey. How she isn’t leaving him, she would always be with him and he would always be with her. Holding her and the constant sound of his voice brought her around back to reality and she stayed there for several hours. All of a sudden she was thirsty and drank a full bottle of water, eat a bowl of watermelon and fresh Dairy Queen Chocolate Malt. It has been a week since she ate anything. Where did all this come from?? She has been alert and talkative for several hours. It is now bed- time and her medication is kicking in putting her back to slumber. We are anticipating a quiet night’s sleep and will wait for the next phase in her journey. The day has been active for the caretakers. We are on full alert at all times.

Thank you for respecting the no phone calls and visits.

Aunt Janet

SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 2007 07:28 AM, CDT
Fran got through the night and is resting peacefully at this time. Many of us spent the night around her. Some of us talked to her about saying our goodbyes. There were tears and smiles with expressions of love. Fran has continued to be lucid, although there are times of disorientation. Again, we are asking people to respect this family time by limiting the phone calls and visiting. Jeanie

FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 2007 08:29 PM, CDT
Friday-

Fran has taken another turn in her journery. The family is asking that only family members now be around her. For those in groups, please designate a spokes person or contact person and have them make a phone call for any futher information. PLEASE keep the phones calls limited. Respect the family in what they are going through and their time.

Thank you for all they wonderful support you have shown and thank you for the prayers.

Aunt Janet

THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2007 08:32 PM, CDT
Thursday-

Today has been a quiet day. Fran managed to sit on the deck a few times today, enjoying the fresh air without the humidity. Some family and friends came to sit with her. She has a strong sense of visitors arriving and wants to spend time sitting with them.

Fran's eyes are darker and her skin itches from the lack of liver fuction.

There is always plenty of prayers ..... with Fran and for Fran. There is also never enough prayers.

Aunt Janet

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 2007 10:26 PM, CDT
Yesterday, we thought Fran was near death, but she is still surprising us. Her brothers made a visit and Fran ended up making it out to the deck to enjoy them and some other loving friends.

Last night, Fran was disoriented and got up out of bed twice. Keith sleeps on the couch in the same room and got her back into bed. Tonight we plan to have closer monitoring.

This morning, Fran was groggy and lethargic until I tried to wake her up to tell her that the Bishop of Nigeria was here to see her again. She opened her eyes to see him in full vestments, and broke out in a big smile. Keith asked where the Pope is, all the other church dignitaries have been here. The Bishop said to look in the drive way, he may be coming.

During the day, friends from LaGrande keep surprising Fran, who loves to see them! This afternoon, we had Fran's nephew's birthday party here so she could be a part of it. Fran stayed up till they served her a somemore, which the neices and nephews made over the grill.

After Fran retired, our good friend Sister Judy gathered the four neices and neshews together and talked to them about death and dying. She has a way of speaking to children in a language they understand. Of course, us adults were listening in and were as touched as the kids were. She did say that the kids may find the wake a little boring, and that they may ask her to take them to the Dairy Queen once. I think they will probably remember to do that and get their treat.

Fran has taken her meds now and hopefully will have a better night. We appreciate all the support and hope you all stay close. Jeanie

TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2007 02:16 PM, CDT
Tuesday

Fran is declining rapidly now. Her movement is labored and very slow. She has been sleeping most of the day occasionally mumbling incoherent words.

Fran received a blessing this morning by a bishop from Nigeria. She wanted to be on the deck and it took everyone’s effort to get her there and back. Keith now has a wheel chair should they ever have to transport her again.

Jesus is coming for her and she is so prepared. Weep not for Fran. She has reached perfection.

MONDAY, JUNE 25, 2007 10:06 PM, CDT
Monday -

Fran had the same kind of a day she had on Saturday with dozing off in the middle of a sentence. Only today the dozing lasted longer and her voice is getting softer. The swelling in her eyes has gone down but her leg continues to give her problems. Her determination to continue to do things is quite a challenge. Today she wanted to go shopping, and shopping she went, with the help of a friend and Keith. They pushed her in a wheel chair and she bought a new outfit at Wal-Mart. Her passion even comes out during her struggle.

Family continues to give Fran & Keith support with the wonderful donations of cooked food and fresh vegetables. It is one less thing for Keith and Jeanie to worry about.

Fran continues to want to send thank you cards to those of you who have been so generous. I am sure along the way someone may have been missed. Please except our apologies and know that you are appreciated in every way. Fran & Keith can’t put into words how moving the outpour of gifts has been. And thank you to the cards that are showing up signed by different people only with a signature of “Your Friend” in different handwritings. From the bottom of their hearts, they would like to say, “Thank You,” to all of you.

Everyday is a journey. No two days are becoming the same. Please continue with your love, support and prayers, for it truly does help.

Aunt Janet

SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2007 01:11 PM, CDT
Sunday - Fran woke up this morning with swollen eyes. Her right leg continues to be swollen and causing problems with her walk. She is much more alert today and is requesting assistance when walking around. Hopefully no more falls. The more she moves around the less swelling in her eyes.

Fran is receiving communion daily. Everyday is a different person bearing the gifts, and sharing the word of God.

Keith's family is visiting today bringing lots of warmth and comfort for the two of them. More items have been added to the "Memorial Garden" and Fran is enjoying the day visiting. New photos have been added to the "Photo" page. If you get a chance, check them out. I am sure there will be more added as the garden grows.

Please continue the support, prayers, and all the wonderful kind words.

Aunt Janet

SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2007 08:18 PM, CDT
Fran's Saturday has been another chapter in her journey. Her right foot is swollen, giving her trouble lifting that foot causing an inbalance and a few falls during the day. Her eyelids drop fast, as she sits in a chair. If you didn't know better, you would think she is sleeping, but she can hear the conversation going on around her. Her skin continues to darken into the deep mustard color and her eyes are proof that her liver is being strangled by the cancer. They also have the look of jaundice. The rollercoaster of this journey produces good days and not so good days. She tries hard to greet everyone but sometimes that is not always possible. Today she was pampered by one of her salon's generous friends at home. She so looks forward to moments of being pampered. Friends and family continue to support Fran with moments of warmth and compassion. Laughter is one of God's greatest medicine - Don't forget to show your pink even if it is your underware. Fran now has two beautiful benches in her "Memorial Garden" that were donated along with a beautiful bird bath. Fran is so proud to show you her garden and will sit awhile with you amoung the statues and array of flowers. Joseph (the bird) has taken two baths today in his private swiming pool. Fran thanks everyone for all the cards and letters that keep pouring in. As always, the prayers are felt and the family appreciates the love and support.

Aunt Janet

FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 2007 06:24 PM, CDT
Thursday and now Friday, these days go so fast. So many caring people always gathering around us. Fran doesn't want to miss anyone and today she has been up all day. She is ready to get a good nights sleep and Keith and I are tired, too. Keith is going to try to get a picture on this site and you can all see the wonderful hair. One of the salon girls is going to come over tomorrow to do a facial for Fran, and her good friend in massage comes over every day or two. Fran is enjoying her days. Jeanie

THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2007 08:17 AM, CDT
Wednesday was a big day for Fran. Keith took her down to the salon and she had her hair frosted with two shades of pink! Those girls at the salon go way out of their way to pamper Fran, and she loves it and them. Keith is separating out the doses of pills now and Fran would rather do it herself. She has always been serious about dosing and taking her meds, and now she has less control of them. This is definitely not easy for Keith or I, we both love her so much. Your visits and food are a big help and support. Jeanie

TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2007 08:50 PM, CDT
Tuesday Fran was going to go to PH, but just didn't feel up to it. She has been out on the deck a few times this afternoon and a past priest who was here from Nigeria gave her a blessing. Fran seemed more lethargic this morning than usual, and her awake periods are getting shorter. She is planning on going down to the salon to get her hair done tomorrow, hopefully she will feel up to it. Just a few people stopped by today and we enjoyed a delicious lasagna and a fantastic desert tray for supper. Jeanie

MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2007 07:40 PM, CDT
Sunday and now Monday have been more heart warming days. Fran continues to go out to the patio for short visits with family and friends. She made a little mistake this morning and took night time meds, so was harder to keep her eyes open. She wants to go to PH tomorrow, and hopefully can get to the salon on Wed to get her hair done. She wants pink highlights, thinks it will go well with her new dark hair. It's the first time in years she has had hair this long. Hospice started today and is thinning out the meds that she doesn't need anymore. Fran seems to like the helper and the nurse. Fran's angel garden is growing each day with plants, benches, stepping stones, statuaries, tiles with sayings on them, etc. It has opened up a whole new way of caring for Fran. Jeanie

SUNDAY, JUNE 17, 2007 07:47 AM, CDT

Saturday was a full day for Fran. She spent periods of time out on the deck with people who come to show their love. Some other angels helped Fran work on projects she wants to finish. Fran sleeps a lot, but is still very much interested in living. She says that she is going to be around for a while until the hand of her Lord comes for her. She so enjoys spending time with people. It amazes all of us how Fran's family and friends continue to be there in so many ways, we are so blessed. THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 2007 05:40 PM, CDT
We went to PH today for fluids. Fran wants to keep going down there once a week. She cares a lot about seeing her fellow patients and keeping up with everybody. When we got home Hospice was waiting for us to give us the whole story and enroll us in the program.

While we are talking to them, numerous people started showing up. It continues to amaze us how many people are supporting us in so many ways. The stories we are reading in the guest book reach the bottom of our heart and then some.

Fran gets tired often and gets rest when she needs to. However, she loves to see people and we want anyone who feels like it to come up. It is better to come in late afternoon, and please do not call in the morning.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2007 12:24 PM, CDT
What a wonderful outpouring of love that you are showing Fran. She really is in awe. Today Fran is trying to get back to normal taking calls and visits she dearly loves. It would be appreciated if you could call in the afternoon so she can get some much needed sleep in the morning. Thanks to all of the aunts that stopped by yesterday along with her brother Mark and friends.

Fran visited Parker Hughes today for treatment. After blood tests were run the doctor came in and talked to both Fran and her Mom, Jean. The information that she told them was not good. Fran's blood tests showed the liver is shutting down and that treatment would do more harm than good to the liver. Fran and her mom asked how long Fran has. Doctor said probably one to two weeks. Anyone that would like to visit with Fran is welcome. Please call ahead or e-mail.

Update from 12/26/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Fran had a consult with her oncology Dr today and got results of the scans taken 2 weeks ago. The chest and lungs are clear, the bones are stable/no change, but the spots on the liver are larger. The tumor markers in the blood are not as bad as they had been during the summer, but are higher than they were recently. So, the liver is the target area for another regimen of chemo. Fran has another problem with the white parts of her blood not recovering, or recovering slower. Because of this problem, the oncologist is going with some chemo drugs that go to the liver first instead of the blood. These are Xelota and Veneralbine which should have a milder effect on the white blood.

We asked the Dr about Bone Marrow Transplant, and she said up until a few years ago, they were doing this with metastatic breast cancer. They now have statistics that show it does no better than chemo therapy. It is very comforting for us to be at Parker Hughes, a research center that studies each individual for treatment possibilities.

Fran has been feeling good with hardly any treatment for a couple months. We are looking forward to the new Vibrasound chair that Mom has on order, should be here early Feb. In the mean time, Keith is doing well, back to his old self doing handy things around the house. He is in the process of preparing to carpet the front room and office room. Of course, first he is doing electrical and carpentry fix-ups which should be very nice.

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and will be blessed during the New Year!

We continue to thank you for your thoughts and prayers, and send our love from Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzi

Update from 11/30/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Fran and I (Mom) had a super time at cousin Sue Marie's beach wedding and dance! You would not have known, that Fran was in chemo treatment the way she boogied at the dance. It was so good to see her having a good time. Of course, it had been 6 weeks since her last treatment because of white blood problems. Two and three weeks before our trip, Fran was not able to get chemo, but her blood had come up just before we left. This week she went in for chemo and once again, her white blood was not up to par, so they decided to give her 80% of the first treatment. When she went on the second day of treatment, her counts were down further, so no treatment. Her Dr. wants her to get the scans in a couple weeks and then decide on what to do.

While we were out in CA, we visited the manufacturer of a special frequency apparatus called a Vibrasound Zero Gravity Chair. It is something I saw at a convention for music therapists a number of years ago. It can have a big impact on stress as well as balancing your energy system. I (Mom) am in the process of trying to acquire the funds to get this chair for Fran and maybe for others who might want to try it out.

Keith, on the other hand, had another episode of rapid heart and feeling like passing out at work while we were gone. He called his cardiologist and was told to wait to see if it happens more than twice a month. If it does, he should make an appointment to go back in. Keith is going to be working nights in Jan & Feb when Menards will be changing their store around. He is looking forward to regular same hours 5 days a week, even though it is nights.

We once again are sincerely indebted to all of you for your continued support, God bless you with a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Love from Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzi

Update from 10/10/06

Dear Family and Friends,

This last week was a down week for Fran and Keith both. Fran was supposed to have treatment, which she works hard at psyching herself up for. She was refused because her white blood parts were not high enough. On top of not getting on with it, she had to spend another week housebound because of fear of catching some bug. Of course, depression sets in and it was an ugly week. Today, she got the first day of her treatment, goes back tomorrow for the other part. She was really up today, probably because she got out and could be around people for awhile.

Keith has not been sleeping good for quite a while now, and also has been running a temp and chills. He stayed home from work today to go in with Fran and see his Dr at PH. She suggested he get some Melatonin to see if it might help him. He is so tired, he has been just dragging. So a friend of theirs from church took them in and I (Mom) took of work early to go pick them up and settle them in for an afternoon nap for the both of them.

We thank you for all the support and hope you can continue to hang in there with us. Please keep the thoughts, e-mails, and prayers coming, we appreciate every bit of it so much.

Love and blessings from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 9/12/06

Dear Family and Friends,

We got results on Fran today, wasn't exactly what we wanted to hear, but was not that bad either. Her scans are stable with no new areas, but the tumor markers in the blood work were up. So, she is going to need to continue with chemo (Midoxantrone & Taxol). She starts tomorrow, Wed and Thurs this week and repeat every 3 weeks. Fran pretty much figured whatever the scans showed, her Dr would have her continue treatment anyway to make sure we are not letting anything get away from us. Fran also had a head scan today to rule out any spreading there, the Dr. questions why the tumor markers are up.

Now Keith is another matter, he has been having sweating, dizziness, and racing heart episodes. So his Dr. at PH set up an appointment with a cardiologist for this afternoon. We rushed from PH over to Abott Hospital for this meeting. They did an EKG and treadmill test. Keith did OK and his Dr. decided it might be a medication problem. He is cutting the Amitriptiline med and stopping his blood pressure meds and changing it to a Beta Blocker and come back next week. In the meantime, Keith is wearing a portable heart monitor for 24/7 for 30 days. Whenever he has an episode, he is supposed to record it and report into a central recording station that gets back to the Dr. Keith is still working part-time hours.

We continue to thank all of you for thoughts and prayers and hope they keep on coming.......
Love from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 8/23/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Fran had her scans today and has a meeting with her oncologist in 2 weeks for results. Keith saw his Dr at PH today, also, and she reviewed the reports that have been faxed from the Wyoming MN hospital. All the reports are not in yet, but Dr. Tiawo (PH) gave him prescriptions for blood pressure and sleep aid until she sees the rest of the results of tests that he had. Keith eye sight and activities are back to normal and will return to work on Labor Day. They are spending a few days at the cabin in the meantime.

Fran has been battling fevers in addition to fatigue lately, we think she picked up a bug at the hospital when she was visiting Keith for 3 days. She has also had a problem with fluid retention in her legs and feet. She has mostly prone for a few days now, along with additional amino acids to help with the protein deficiency that she keeps fighting.

Fran and Keith have started doing Frequency Therapy after Keith got home from the hospital. What in the world is that?? Some of you may remember my work in the past, mostly with Frequency Analysis. There happened to be a couple involved in using a Frequency generating system called Beam-Ray, who Fran got to know at PH. We, of course, expressed interest in the program and asked if Fran might be allowed to come over to their house to try some treatments. Pam, the person who has been using the program for a few months, was cleared of her fast growing ovarian cancer after just a few treatments at PH. She and her husband, who are making payments on the system, decided to bring the machinery over to Fran and Keith's for them to use temporarily. To begin with, you are supposed to have the program run twice a day for 1 1/2 hours. The first night after the first treatment, we did an analysis on Fran. It showed her frequencies going in a very positive way. We are going to do another this evening, but expect that any big changes will take awhile. This, of course, does not mean that her regular treatment at PH will change, we only hope to enhance Fran's chances of an easier life.

One of the hardest battles Fran has been fighting is the fatigue. While reading "The Cure" magazine today, I came across an article on "The Invisible Wound". It stated "A feeling of debilitating tiredness or total lack of energy that lasts for days, weeks, months or longer, fatigue is the most common side effect of chemotherapy." It also said "Cancer fatigue is real and it's different than what healthy people feel at the end of a long day. And, unlike usual tiredness, post-chemo fatigue is not relieved with a good night's rest, but rather becomes a chronic challenge." It's easy to think laziness, so maybe this helps us understand a little more about what Fran fights daily for over 6 years now.

Thanks again to so many who continue to help out Fran and Keith, we are so grateful and send hugs to all, Love from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 8/23/06

Dear Family & Friends,

Today Keith had a procedure done where they go down his throat with a scope to look at the back of his heart. He wasn't looking forward to it, but while they had him out, they called in a second doctor to look at his eye. This Dr. did some massage on a nerve going to the eye and relieved a twisted part. When Keith went in, he was wearing a patch because his vision was fuzzy, but when he woke up, his vision was
much improved and didn't need the patch anymore. He still has another procedure scheduled on Friday which is an EEG, today's was a TEE. They still don't know why he passed out.

Fran, on the other hand has evidently caught a bug and has been having fevers for the last four nights. It was 2 weeks since her last chemo treatment on Tues. Next Tues. she is scheduled for scans and will get the results a couple weeks later. Of course, we are hoping that these last treatments worked better than the previous round of treatments.

Fran and Keith are going up to Dan's cabin Wed. after a PFT test that is scheduled, and will stay until Sunday. The next Monday, Keith plans to return to work on Labor Day.

Thanks and Blessings to all our loyal supporters, until we get more news........
Love from Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzi

Update from 8/20/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Keith is home, but will not go back to work until end of next week or so. He is scheduled for a sleep deprived EEG. That will show if or when he has had seizures, a possible reason for the loss of consciousness. He is not supposed to drive or go to work until after the test. Another test they want to do is a procedure where they go down the back of the throat with a scope and check the back of the heart for any damage or holes in the heart. His left eye sight is still fuzzy, has not gotten better or worse since Tuesday when the episode happened. He is wearing a patch or tape on his lens in the meantime.

Please remember them both in your thoughts and prayers. We all definitely are uplifted by all the support from so many of you so often - THANK YOU!!!!

Love from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

p.s. Sorry, this should have gone out last Friday, since then, Keith has been scheduled for a test on Wednesday, and another on next Friday.

Update from 7/18/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Just a note to update you on Fran. Today, the white blood parts were critically low, so Fran will have to go in for blood work and antibiotics, etc. tomorrow and the next day, until it improves. She is feeling quite well, in fact, she went out yesterday to see her great support group at LaGrande Salon, and they gave her a nice pedicure and foot massage.

Fran, Keith, and I are completely blown away by all the very special people who are volunteering to help in so many ways. Thank you everyone, may God bless each of you.

Fran and Keith got away for an enjoyable week at Dan & Cheri's cabin. Fran had chemo this past week and after another round in 2 weeks will have scans the end of August.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers and thoughts, as we do all of you. We hope many of you can come to the Benefit on Aug 13th, we'd love to see you.

Love, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 6/6/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Lots of tears today as Fran and the rest of us gather ourselves together to face a whole new round of chemo. The results of the recent MRI and CT scans showed the spots on the liver have grown to about 1/2" in size and the area of the lower back L2 and down has increased cancer cell activity. The news was not a surprise because Fran has been having increased pain in that area, so has increased her pain meds. The lower back has triggered pain in the neck and shoulder area, also, so getting comfortable has been difficult.

Fran's Dr. ordered another test, MRCP, to look into the lesions on the liver. She wants to do a stint if the area will be affecting the bile ducts, so that Fran does not get jaundiced. We had that done after her regular meds and blood work at PH today.

The new chemo includes Carboplaten and Taxetere. These are drugs that Fran has had a positive result from in the past. This treatment will be 2 days a week every 3 weeks, starting next Tues.

Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers, Love to each of you from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 5/27/06

Dear Family and Friends,

This week has been much better, thanks to all the support many of you have shown in your own special ways. Fran has lost most of the fluid that she was retaining, so is getting around better. The white blood counts (infection fighters) are doing much better, but still has deficient hemoglobin counts, which makes her want to sleep a lot. Her appetite is better at times, but is on high protein with no sugar or carbs. She is limited mostly to meat and salads. So, with Keith working all this weekend, Fran and I are hanging around the house.

Fran's Aunt Judy has been spending time and energy on the financial woes. Her expertise in managing the check book, budgeting, calling creditors, etc. has been very beneficial. She has found some assistance for a few items which should help the situation. Judy continues to put forth the effort for Fran even though, as many of you know, she has her own struggles on an on-going basis. We are so grateful to her for making our days a little easier.

Fran had scans last Tuesday and we may have results this next week. She has been experiencing increased low back pain, so we are anxious to know what's going on. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we send our sincere thanks and love, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 5/20/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Fran has been down to pH every day this week except Friday. She has developed a serious case of fluid retention, causing problems with blood pressure, shortness of breath, difficulty with mobility, etc. Her Dr. says she has a protein deficiency which causes the cells to leak and pool fluids in the extremities. They gave her shots of Bumex, but didn't have good results right away. Yesterday, the swelling finally started to go down. All of this has made for a second week of shorter work days for Keith and of course less pay.

Fran is now on a high protein, low carb diet, off of sugar and starches. So far, she has lasted since Wednesday without the chips and ice cream, etc. She says, Boy, has it been hard!!

Fran is still running a low-grade temp and lack of energy, so still is sleeping a lot. We are definitely ready for an improvement in her condition, and welcome all the support we can get. So please continue with the thoughts/e-mails and prayers, we know they do help.

Love from Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzi

Update from 5/13/06

Dear Family & Friends,

Low white blood, platelets, hemoglobin, temp of 103+, transfusions, shots, and antibiotics

Since chemo on May 2nd, blood parts have been dropping more than usual, with platelets getting dangerously low. Fran got shots to give herself everyday, but still had to go into pH to get blood work and antibiotics 3 days in a row. Keith had to take a day off work on the day of the transfusion at the U of M. Blood work after the transfusion was still not even up to normal, so it will take a while to build up. Fran goes back in Mon for blood check. Scans are scheduled for May 23rd instead of the chemo treatment. Fran and her Dr. will wait for results before making any decisions.

Warm wishes to all on these cold, rainy days, and sincere thanks to each of you for continued good thoughts and prayers,

Love, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 5/7/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Last week Keith was cleaning up the yard after the deck building. He had a small fire to burn some leaves, etc. and accidentally singed the side of the garage. He doused it with water and thought it was OK. He even checked before he went to bed to see if any thing might be happening, everything looked fine. At 3:00 am, Fran was awakened by the Police to tell her the neighbor saw the fire and the trucks were on their way. Fran woke up Keith who was out the door in a flash only to be told to stay back and the firemen would take care of it. They proceeded to saw off siding and found the fire retardant boards smoldered and finally went up in flames. I couldn't imagine who was cutting wood at that ungodly time of the morning, when I awoke to see bright lights shining in my motor home and firemen wandering around the back yard and the other side of the garage from me. They hung around for an hour making sure all flames were out. And now the garage is one step closer to getting new siding, although funds won't allow that for a while.

Tuesday was another long chemo day for Fran, and she is going through the low hemoglobin and platelets. She has been in bed most of the time, except to get out to the deck to see the sun now and then. She says food doesn't taste good and resorts to P & B sandwiches. She has been giving herself shots again for the white blood, and next Tuesday she will see where the counts are. With the platelets low, there is more chance of bleeding, so she has to stay off the Ibuprofen and reduce her coumiden. Fran's Dr. has ordered scans for 3 weeks instead of the next chemo. Hopefully, we will see good results and then go on from there. It is times like these, when thoughts and prayers are more than welcome, and we continue to be grateful.

All our love, from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 4/25/06

Dear Family and Friends,

For the first time, Fran's white blood count has gone above normal, according to today's blood work. Last week, it was at an all time low and the concern was that she did not have any fighting cells for her immune system. She has been giving herself shots all week to assist these cells, but I have my own ideas on her recovery.

Saturday, the whole back yard was full of people building a wheel chair accessible deck for Fran in case she may need it. Fran sat out most of the day enjoying all the enthusiasm and support for her - This is what I think turned her condition around. She and Keith have been enjoying the sun and fresh air on their new deck ever since. All of you who helped can rest assured that you have definitely helped build up their daily outlook on things.

There have been others who have been on the scene lately, including help with finances, angel dusters, food bearers, etc. You all have blessed Fran & Keith with much more than you know. It all makes the journey a little easier!!!

The hemoglobin parts of Fran's blood work today were still below normal, so she is still tired and needs lots of rest. Next week is the chemo treatment again, and also will find out if the tumor markers count is changing. It seems, so far, that Fran is withstanding this heavy duty treatment very well.

After Parker Hughes, we went to a place called "Open Arms" and picked up some ready-to-heat-up meals that are free to breast cancer patients, etc. These will be handy for Fran when Keith works till late.

For your thoughts, prayers, visits, and all the ways you show your support, we are so grateful.
All our LOVE and hugs to each of you, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 4/13/06

Dear Family and Friends,

Just a note to let everyone know the new chemo went OK on Tuesday. It was a long drip from 9 am to 5 pm. The chemo meds are Cytotoxin, Methatrexate, and 5FU. Also, meds are necessary to protect the bladder from bleeding which are 3 doses on the day of chemo. Besides this med, other meds are given to keep the blood levels up and to help with nausea, etc. Come to find out, one of these meds was not going to be covered by the ins, only 10% of it, which the total cost was $1100 (cost of 1 shot). As usual, the staff at pH checked out other possibilities and found a pharmacy that would deliver the med to Fran's house for the cost of her co-pay which was $25. Go figure!!

Fran is geared up for whatever happens, including losing the hair one more time, and fighting the low blood levels which are most definitely coming.

Mom took an extra day off today to cater to the situation including making homemade chocolate chip cookies-what else? I'm parked in the driveway and am going to work 3 days a week until I have to go in 5 days a week. I plan to be around here for a while.

Please know your thoughts and prayers are very important and that we appreciate all of you. Love Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzi

Update from 3/30/06

Hello Family & Friends,
Thank you all for your prayers and concern. We do appreciate it and feel them.

We had a little scare Sun 19th. I thought I was having a heart attack. I had chest pains and hard to breath. They checked me out. No heart attack, no blood clots in the lungs. They sent me home with pain killers to help with the chest pains. Went to Parker Hughes Mon and they thought it was inflammation of the cartilage in the sternum, combined with acid reflux. So I am on ibuprofen 3 times a day and previcid for acid reflux. This has helped in the pain.

I just found out that the cancer has spread to my liver. I have many small spots there. I will be starting major chemo on April 11. I will be getting three chemo's in one day. I pray that this will work and all go away. The rest of the scans showed no other new spots and no growing spots. This is a blessing in itself. We ask that you continue to pray and keep the good thoughts going.
Thank you all so much. We love you all.

My mom will be home by April 1st. It will be good to have her here to help.

Love Ya
Fran & Keith

Update from 3/2/06

Hello Family and Friends,

We want to thank you all for your prayers and concern. We feel them each and every day.

We have some news. I have spots on both bones coming from both knees. I will be having a consult with radiation Dr on Tue. This will mean probably radiation on the knees, probably 4 weeks or so. The tumor markers are also up. This means back on chemo. Taxol will be the drug and will have low dose every week. This drug helps to clear the bones mainly. This is where my cancer is. On most every bone from neck to knees now. I don't know how this will affect my body or my bones.

We made it through so far and I am not giving up yet. I DO NEED YOUR PRAYERS THOUGH. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am having a trying time with the depression. It seems I am in the depths of this and trying to get out of it, but it is difficult with all this info coming in. There seems to be little light at the end of the tunnel. I keep trying to focus on Jesus in all this and he has helped me thus far and with your prayers, we can get farther. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND CONCERNS. I COULDN'T DO IT WITH OUT YOU.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!
WE LOVE YOU ALL AND WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ALL OF YOU AS WELL!!!!!!!!!!
Love Ya
Fran & Keith

Update from 1/5/06

Hello Family and Friends,
Thank you all for your prayers and concern. We feel and appreciate them more than you know. Just when it is the hardest, someone calls or e-mails and it just picks me up. THANK YOU!!!! you know who you are.

Keith and I just got back from a week in Florida, at Mom's motorhome, on the beach. We loved getting away and enjoying the sunshine. We both got little to much sun, but it felt great. Mom was busy with Trish and their business. We only saw her 2 days. We did get to see Uncle Jim's house and swim in the pool.
The ocean was too chilly to get all the way in. We just waded and then had dinner at a restaurant on the beach, watched the sun set. BEAUTIFUL.

Unfortunately, we didn't get the results of my scans. They are using a new radiology dept. They take longer to read the scans. They did say that next week Tue Jan 31 we will have the results. Keep your finger crossed and prayers coming that they are in. I am anxious about the results, having to have more chemo. I will make it through but it gets little old, going through it. Keith and I are making due, trying to keep our heads above water. The vacation was needed and we really enjoyed it.

Thank you all again for your prayers and concern. Keep them coming, we need them and appreciate them.

Love Ya
Fran & Keith

Update from 11/9/05

Hello Family & Friends,

Thank you all for your concerns and prayers. We both feel them so much.

I am feeling much better after this round of chemo. We decided to try a different shots instead of the one shot that caused all the bone pain. This is the shot that works on the white cells. I am not in much pain and feel OK after chemo. I still have the numbness in hand, feet and mouth. We are dealing with things OK. I have to take the week off after chemo, that is hard on the checkbook. We are trying to manage.

Please keep praying for us to make it through. Thank you all so much.

Love Ya
Fran & Keith

Update from 10/23/05

Hello Family & Friends,
Thank you so much for your prayers. We have felt them this last week.
I had chemo on Mon. this was OK, just little bloating. Then went down to have neulasta (this helps the white blood cells to produce more cells to prevent infection.) One of the side effects of this shot is bone pain. This meant no matter how I sat, laid, stood I would feel pain through out my body. From the top of my head to the soles of my feet. I went to Parker Hughes Thur. after getting no sleep on Wed night due to the pain. They gave me fluids, pain med and prescription for sleeping pills. They worked great, I slept from 10PM to 12 noon the next day. Then the next day I slept from 11PM to 11 am the next day. I am feeling better today, Sun. I still have little pain in my lower back. I now am dealing with numbness all over my body. This I can deal with and am.

Thank you all for your support and prayers, you don't know how much I feel them and thank GOD for all of you prayer members. I will be going through this every 3 week. We know what to do now, so maybe not so much pain. Please GOD. I have chosen to accept what ever GOD has in store for us. Thank you all for going through this with me.
Thanks again so much.
Love Ya Fran & Keith

Update from 10/11/05

Hello Family & Friends,
We want to thank you all for the prayers and ask that you continue to pray.
The prayers have been felt.

The most recent scans showed no change in the tumors or the activity of the tumors. Unfortunately the tumor markers have risen to a level that scars my oncologist. With this news I will start chemo again on Mon. Oct. 17. Having chemo Mon & Tue. I will be on Avastin if the insurance co. approves it. This is a smart drug that goes after the proteins in the cancer and leaves the rest of the tissues alone. Then on Tue. I will have Abraxane, which is a new Taxol. They give this in conjunction with the Avastin to help it move throughout the body. I will lose my hair again. Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate having hair. Those of you going through menopause know what I mean. I will probably feel the effects of the chemo on the weekend.

Thank you again for your prayers.
Love Ya
Fran & Keith

Update from 8/9/05

Hello Family and Friends,

First of all, thank you, thank you soooooo much for the prayers and support you have given to us. We do appreciate it so much.

Second, the latest scans showed no changes. This means that the spots on my spine are still active, but not moving or growing. I stopped the pill form of chemo (Xeloda) about a month ago. My hands were numb and tingling and this is one of the side affects of the chemo. My hands have not been as numb. Since there has been no change my Dr. has said no more chemo for now.

Third, my Dr. has stopped the anticancer pill I was on (Aromasin) and put me on another pill (Femara). This one works a little different. I helps stop the estrogen more. Plus, some numbness is associated with the previous pill.

Fourth, I will continue with the Zoladex (to prevent the estrogen from being produced in my body) shot once a month. Also I will have the Zometa ( IV form) to strengthen my bones, also once a month. I will continue to go to Parker Hughes every Tue. If you need to talk or whatever.

Thank you so very much and God bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOVE YA,
Fran & Keith, Mom Podzi (by proxy)

Update from 5/31/05

Hello Family & Friends,
We have wonderful news. The scans I had last week showed that no new growths and what was there is inactive. There are spots on thoracic spine but no new ones. The PET scan shows hot (active, new spots). Mine showed no hot spots. The CT scan showed a spot that we are watching in the pelvic region. The Dr. thinks it's a fatty, mushy inch by inch spot. We will have an MRI in late July to see further what it is. For the mean time I will continue to take Xeloda pills, one week on and one week off. Zometa (bone strengthening IV), once a month and Zolodex (estrogen blocker) once a month. So far my tumor markers are coming down. The estrogen levels are stable with the shots once a month. My blood work comes back in the normal range when we take it. I feel real good and people say I look fairly normal. They are surprised to hear I am on Chemo.

We want to thank you all for the good work in the prayer dept. I can feel them each and everyday. I was told that I don't need to go back to PH for two weeks. You all know that I will be there next Tue. It feels good for my heart, to see the patients each week. I think it is good for them to see me also.

Thank you all so much and I thank you all in advance for future prayers.

With all our love
Fran, Keith & Mom Podzie

Update from 4/12/05

Dear Family and Friends.

Just got back from getting the results on scans of 2 weeks ago. There are no new spots of cancer cells, all organs are still clear. Thoracic and lumbar regions of the back still have active cancer cells. One of the tumor markers has come down to normal, but the other one is still above normal although less than it was before. Fran's oncologist has started Fran back on the oral chemo, same as she has been doing since December of '04. The name of the chemo is Zeloda and Fran will be taking it: on for 1 week, off for 1 week, for the next 3 months. Scans will be repeated at that time to check progress again.

Fran wants to thank everyone for past prayers and hopes you can continue to support her in all of the ways so many of you have chosen to express your love and support for her. The e-mails are great and the power of thoughts and prayers are felt in a very strong way.

Fran is continuing to do massages 4 days a week as her energy holds up. She, of course, would like to be over with treatment, but accepts the fact that continued treatment is necessary. Fran tolerates this treatment fairly well except for a few side affects like numbness and loss of energy. Her energy is better though than it was during earlier treatments.

May you all be blessed in a special way, Love from Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzie

Update from 12/14/04

Dear Family and Friends,

We want you to know we genuinely appreciate all your prayers and encouragement. After finishing the last round of chemo, Fran had CT scan, Bone scan, MRI of the brain. We are really happy to tell you that both the CT scan and the MRI were both still clear. The Bone scan still shows similar results of cancer cells on various bones. Fran's Dr has put her on a new chemo which is oral and this week's blood/tumor markers are already moving in the right direction. This chemo is a 2 week on/2 week off until the next scans in 2 months.

Fran and Keith have been busy working on a cookbook for their Patient Advocacy Group fund raiser at Parker Hughes. Anyone interested in getting one with many of Keith's own recipes, can e-mail them.

Fran and Keith are also looking forward to the "Big" Disney Cruise early in Feb. They are going with Fran's brothers Mark and Dan and their families. Mom Podzi is going to the desert where she belongs this time of the year.

Many thanks to everyone for caring and may God bless you in a very special way this Christmas Season.

Love, Fran, Keith and Mom Podzie

Update from 9/14/04

Dear Family & Friends,

Fran and Keith are recovering from a busy vacation at Bruce and Shirley's (good friends) cabin, in preparation for the Dr. visit with Fran's oncologist today. Fran got the word 2 weeks ago that the tumor markers were up. The Dr ordered Bone scan and CT scan which showed 1 new area on the skull, and areas on the thoracic and lumbar spinal column. Fran will be resuming chemotherapy on Monday Sept. 20th to get treatment as soon as possible. It will be a drug therapy that Fran has already had before - Carboplaten & Taxol. Estrogen level was also up, so there will be shots once a month to decrease that because her tumors are hormone sensitive.

We believe in God's plan and know there must be "good" in here somewhere. We are asking again for support, especially in prayer, to help us down this path again. Fran is in good spirits now, eager to get on with the treatment.

Keith says "nobody said life is a bed of roses, some thorns do come along the way". Mom says makes sense to me, sounds like life-real-enough. Fran agrees with all of the above.

Love and Hugs to all, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzie

Update from 7/28/04

Dear Family & Friends,

Thank you, Thank you so much. Your prayers are being felt and are doing great things.

The latest scans: a CT and a PET. The PET scan shows new hot spots of the cancer. My scan showed no new spots and no hot spots. My CT scan showed the same spots that have been in the past but nothing inflamed or showing cancer. This means that the remission is still and will continue to be.

I am getting stronger each and everyday. We are trying to walk each day. This helps get strength and stability.

We are still trying to raise funds for the Relay for Life in Forest Lake, Aug. 6th. We are also trying to get names on our petition. This is to help Parker Hughes try to stay open. The names are going to be sent to insurance companies and legislature to get them to see the benefits of Parker Hughes.

Thank you all so much for all you do. It was great to see all the family at the reunion. Thank you for all your support.

We love all of you so much.
Fran, Keith & Mom Podzie

Update from 5/19/04

Hello Family & Friends,

Thank you all very much for the prayers and support. We appreciate it very much.

We went to the Dr. Tue for a checkup and bloodwork. While we were talking during the checkup she said the word "REMISSION." Isn't that wonderful? We were so surprised we didn't know what to say. It has been almost 5 months since my last chemo and I am feeling wonderful. I have more energy and am able to do more around the house (Keith likes this part).

So thank you all and keep up the good work. We will do our part.

LOVE YA ALL
Fran & Keith

Update from 4/20/04

Dear Family & Friends,

Thank you so much for your continued prayers and concern. We feel them each and everyday.

We received great news today: The CT scan showed no new uptakes. The Bone Scan showed the cancer was not growing and as decreasing in size. This was the best news we've had in long time. We will see the Dr again in May.

Just a reminder, the Relay for Life is coming up Aug 6th in Forest Lake and July 31st in North Branch. Keith and I will again be walking in the Forest Lake one. You can send your donation for bags of $10.00 to us. Please let us know if it is in memory of, or in honor of, and name. Thank you in advance for your continued prayers, love and support.

Please also keep my brother Mark and his family in your prayers. He is going to Iraq to work. He will be there for about 20 weeks. This will be a true test for him and his family.

Thank you again,
Love Fran, Keith & Mom Podzie

Dear Family & Friends,

We thank you all so very much for the continued prayers and support. We all feel so blessed by the continued compassion showed by you all.

We have great news, the tumor marker was at 48 and went down to 32. This means another month of no chemo. Yea!! I am getting stronger each and every day without chemo. We set up times for scans in middle of April just to see how the spots of cancer are responding. We will let you know what the results are when we get them from the Dr.

Love Ya
Fran, Keith & Mom Podzie (back from AZ,but to busy to do this, so Fran is.)

Update from 2/10/04

Hello Family & Friends,

We went to Parker Hughes today, found out about the bone scan. There is no change from the last scan, this means no new growth. No new cancer spots. This is great news for us all. We will have a tumor marker test, from blood test, next Tue, Mar 17th. It takes 5 - 7 days for this test to be done. If this is the same as the last one, we will have another month off of chemo, YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So as of now I am getting stronger and able to fight off any infections, or whatever much better. Thank you all for prayers, support and concern. We really do feel it.

Love Ya all.
Fran, Keith & Mom Podzie ( by proxy)

Update from 12/29/03

Dear Family and Friends,

Tomorrow is the last treatment of this round and things are looking good. The tumor markers are coming down again, they are almost down to normal, and Fran is feeling like the chemo is working. Hopefully, the blood will not get too low that meds can take care of the situation without transfusions and we will be on our way to Nashville to visit Cyn in two weeks. Scans are scheduled when Fran & Keith return and a Dr visit for the 3rd of Feb. They will decide the immediate treatment or not, at that time. Please think about her during this time if you get a chance, and know we all feel your support.

Love and Blessings,
Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzie

Update 12/18/03

Family and Friends,

Just a note to wish you all a blessed and happy holiday season. Thank you for all your prayers throughout the year and thank you in advance for the prayers in the coming year. They are felt and much needed.

We have had 2 cycles of the new chemo and feel like it is working. The first week is weak muscles and fatigue. I try to do one massage a day on Thur and Fri of that week. Then second week in blood counts to worry about. So far I haven't had to have transfusions! This week I try and do massages on Fri only depending on counts. The third week I feel OK and do 2 massages a day. Fri and Sat being the best days. Then it is onto chemo Mon & Tue. The next chemo is Mon 29th and Tue 30th. Then we have vacation Jan 11 - 18. We come home on Sun. and have scans on Jan 19. We see the Dr on Feb 3. So until then no chemo. I can get my strength and stamina back. Get my blood back to normal.

Just wanted to let you know what's going on here. Keep up the prayers and I will keep getting better. Thanks so much.

Happy holidays. LOVE TO ALL
Fran, Keith & Mom Podzie

Update from 11/3/03

Dear Family & Friends,

Fran & Keith just got back from Parker Hughes today, Mon the 3rd. Fran's blood was critical on Friday and she had to go back and have it checked today to see if she needed a transfusion. It was rising slightly, so she just got antibiotics again to ward of infections. The tumor markers have increased on this chemo, so they are giving Fran a 2 week break and will start a new combination of chemo on the 17th of Nov. Fran's really tired and spending a lot of time on the couch right now and not going out for a while.

All prayers and good thoughts are really appreciated and we thank everyone for all the encouragement!! Love from Fran, Keith and Mom Podzie

Update from 10/27/03

Dear Family & Friends,

Saw the Oncologist today and got the bone scan report of last week. There was increased density in a spot on a posterior (back) rib bone, all else remained the same with some inflammation in the hand joints. The CT scan of last week showed no involvement of any of the major organs and a clearing of the clavicle bone with the rest of the areas remaining the same as previous reports. Fran is in the second week of the 3rd round of three weeks each of the present chemo. She had blood work with tumor markers done today. The oncologist said we should take a look to see if the tumor markers went up or down or stayed the same the end of this week. We will decide then if this chemo will continue or Fran will go to another drug.

Fran is tolerating the chemo fairly well, except for the bloating for the first few days. She is continuing to work most days doing 2 massages a day other than chemo days. Fran and Keith are preparing to have Keith's family for Christmas. It'll be a big spread for sure!!

Love to all and thanks for all the support,
Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzie

Update from 8/24/03

Dear Family & Friends,

We're asking for your support again, Fran got the results of this month's scans, etc. today. The bone scan showed that the areas that were affected before are now gone, but now there is new growth of cancer in the upper arms, thoracic (upper back), and the clavicle (collar bone), and right lower femur (thigh bone). This means chemo treatment again starting when Fran and Keith get back from a week at a friends cabin Sept 9th. Fran & Keith are leaving this Friday 29th and will be back Friday the 5th.

We are dealing with this again today, but hope with your prayers and support as so many of you continue to give, we will be better tomorrow and the oncoming days.

Our love and thanks, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzie

Update from 6/19/03

Dearest Family and Friends,

Are you ready for another miracle? Fran's CT scan and PET scan were CLEAR!!! This was the news from the Dr. consult earlier this week. The CT scan also showed that the issues in the spine have been resolved. Because there is nothing showing up to treat, Fran's Dr. has reduced her treatment down to Aromasin which is an anti-cancer drug that she takes orally once a day. The Dr. also wants a blood work done weekly on an ongoing basis. Fran is still waiting for results of a MRI of the spine, ordered because of pain in the lower back area near the location of an earlier treatment. This was back in January when Fran had an injection of a cement type fluid into a vertebrae that had a compression fracture. At that time, she had another fracture higher in the back that was seen, but was not as inflamed, so treatment was put on hold. The pain could be side effects of treatment like the decrease in pulmonary function that Fran is also experiencing at this time.

The important fact is that treatment is obviously working. Fran, Keith, and I (Mom) are so grateful for all your support, God does work in amazing ways!!

Love and our biggest hugs to all from Fran, Keith, and Mom

Update from 4/28/03

Dear Family & Friends,

Today is a great day!! Last fall, the orthopedic specialist told Fran to minimize all movement for fear she could fracture in various spots. The specialist she saw today took a new pelvic x-ray and told Fran she should go without the canes and go ahead and walk, bike, and swim. He thinks the danger of fracture is now only minimal. This goes along with the results of the bone scan which showed minor improvement throughout the skeletal structure. Actually, Fran & I (mom) were surprised to see how good the pelvic bones looked on the x-rays. So thanks to prayer, positive thoughts, etc., Fran has gone from handicapped to normal in 1 day!!!! Please keep Fran in your prayers as we pray for all of you in return.

Love from Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzie

Update from 4/21/03

Dear Family & Friends,

It's been a big week for Fran AGAIN! The oncologist did not have results of the bone scan last week as expected, finally the Dr. called 2 days later. The results were worth waiting for and are exceptionally good. There is an over-all improvement of the skeletal structure, especially in the spine!!! The Dr. wants Fran to see an orthopedic specialist again for an opinion on increasing her movement, possibly exercise of some kind. Last fall, she was told not to do anything for fear of further fractures and to walk with canes. The improvement is super-great, but there was a lot of bone loss from the cancer. Fran is having another problem now with oxygen exchange, which causes her to breath hard with little exertion. They are treating her with steroids for the time being, which may be what is causing her pulse and blood pressure to rise. Hopefully things will calm down by next week when Fran is supposed to start chemo again, on a reduced schedule of only 1 day every 2 weeks. Please keep Fran & Keith in your prayers, Fran says she knows your thoughts and prayers are being answered and feels continually held up by them. God definitely works in wonderful ways,

Love from Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzie

Update from 4/9/03

Dear Family and Friends,

This past week has been another exhausting one for Fran. We just returned from getting yet another transfusion because the hemoglobin was too low. Two days ago, it was the platelets that were too low and chance of bleeding. All this is still the effects of chemo, which is going to be on hold now at least temporarily. Yesterday, Keith took Fran to Wyoming Fairview Clinic for a bone scan and a pulmonary function test. From there they went to Parker Hughes Clinic for an IV-IG or immune boosting IV given over 4.5 hours. Another long day from 7 am to 8 pm. This morning, Fran had dark circles around the eyes, but now after the new blood, says she feels better, but is still going to rest for awhile. Friday, she will have to go to Parker H to get the blood checked again and has an appointment to have a consultation with her Dr. next Tues, Apr15th.

Please continue your good thoughts and prayers, Fran is so grateful for all your support.

Love, Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzie

Update from 4/2/03

Dear Family & Friends,

We just got back from Parker Hughes Clinic. Today it was the Doctors's consultation about the MRI of the hip, CT scan, and PET scan which were done last week. The MRI showed some replacement growth from the inside of the femur bone which had been greatly impacted with cancer. The Doctor wants a bone scan to get a more thorough picture of what's happening. The CT scan showed NO cancer in any of the major organs, and the PET scan was clear of any hot spots or any new growth going on. This was all good news to hear and we are grateful, but the Doctor went on to say that we are dealing with metastatic cancer which will be an ongoing treatment of some kind for the foreseeable future. Of course, new things continue to come along, but for now, Fran will get a break from chemo and get a chance to build back some strength and stamina. She will still be going down to the clinic for various injections, blood work, tests and consultations every 2 weeks, but according to these test results, the cancer has been temporarily halted. She will continue to have the CT and PET scans every 2 months to keep a check on anything new that may be starting up.

Fran continues to rest in God's hands and has a strong faith in His will. It's uplifting, to say the least, for Keith and myself as well as many others in her life. Fran feels very blessed by all the support from so many of you in so many ways, please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Love from our hearts to yours.
Fran, Keith, & Mom Podzie

Update from 1/31/03

Hello Family & Friends,

We had a CT and PET scan on Mon. Today we had a consultation with the Oncologist. The results of the scans were normal. This means the chemo is working. We will stay with this chemo for another 2 rounds. Then do more scans and see where we are. This is the best news we have heard, when the other doctors had me dead in a couple of years. My blood work is still good. We will see after the chemo, which is normal after chemo.

Keith and I went out and celebrated, we went to Olive Garden and had salad. This was the best treat for us. Thank you all out in Calif. for your well wishes and prayers. We enjoyed seeing all of you and hope we can see you all soon. Thank you all the rest of you for your prayers. They are truly being felt. God has blessed us with this news.

God bless you all, Love to you all.
Fran & Keith

Update from 1/15/03

Dear Family and Friends,

Fran has been struggling with blood counts again since chemo was given a week ago last Mon. & Tues. Her white blood and especially the platelets have gone so low, she was critical yesterday. Today the WBC started to turn around, but the platelets went down further. If the platelets don't turn around tomorrow, Fran will have to get a transfusion, which we will have to get at the Wyoming Medical facility. The doctors at Parker Hughes are insisting that we will be able to go on our trip as planned. The OK came through today for a medication/injection that Fran can take along with her for the WBC. The pharmacy invoice showed the cost to be over $3100.00 of which Fran only had to pay a $20 copay. We feel very grateful for insurance coverage and also for the opportunity to be a part of Parker Hughes Research. The doctors are confident that things will come around as soon as the chemo wears off.

Tomorrow Keith's vacation starts and both Fran & Keith are hoping to get on the road tomorrow night. We have started loading the motorhome and hope to be out of this Midwest before it gets any colder! Aunt Doris will be our first stop and then a stop at Hot Springs and on to the Podzimeks in California. Fran & Keith will be treated to a massage at Sue's Spa and hopefully sunny days in Southern CA before getting a standby flight (thanks to Sherry Gendreau) on Sunday Jan 26th. That Monday, Fran is scheduled for follow up CT scan and PET scans. Further treatment will depend on what these tests show. Please keep us all in your prayers for a safe trip and positive results in Fran's upcoming tests.

Love Fran, Keith, and Mom Podzie
