Here is a picture of my whale shogi set. I used the "tables" function of Word Perfect to make a 6 x 6 table with cells 1.250 inches by 1.375 inches, uncheckered.

I made the pieces out of strips of bass wood (1" x 1/4" x 2 feet) that I found at a hobby store. Bass wood is light weight like balsa wood and easy to cut, but stronger than balsa wood. Then I used 1/4" vinyl stick on letters (purchased at an arts and craftrs store) to indicate the rank of each piece and carefully drew an inication of the movement of each piece with a fine pointed marker. The final touch was lacquer to protect the pieces and to keep the stick on letters in place.
