I used the "tables" function of Word Perfect to make a 6 x 6 table with cells 0.750 inches by 0.750 inches. I used the "fill" function at 20% shading to checker the alternate squares. This prints out at exactly 50% of the final size of the board. I then took the print out to Kinko's and had enlarged to twice its size, then lamintated. This accomodated the size of the pieces I found at an arts and crafts store. Any three shapes will do, as long as you can find two sizes of each shape. Find your pieces first, then make the board to fit.
I used wooden cubes for the Squares, wooden "doll bodies" for the Triangles (Bishops) and wooden balls with flat bottoms (doll heads), for the Circles. I found these in a Michael's arts and crafts store.
