Summer Lovers (1982) Filmways Productions

Written and Directed by Randal Kleiser

Starring: Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah, Valerie Quennessen, Barbara Rush

Possibly the debuts of the two lead actors, this movie chronicles a post-college graduation trip to Greece for the young lovers. In the free-wheeling atmosphere of sun, sand and endless frollicking they unwind a bit-and even visit a topless beach! (Daryl even says she once dreamt she was a mermaid when she was a little girl!)

This freedom reveals a lack of spice in their whitebread love life, and Peter`s eyes begin to wander toward their pretty French neighbor. Daryl is understandably upset, but is soon drawn into a strong friendship with this "other woman". The inevitable threesome quickly develops, giving each of them more fulfillment than ever before. They frollick on the beach, in the quiant little streets, and all over.

But Valerie, feeling left out one night, and perhaps fearing commitment, picks up another man and slowly drifts away from the others. They feel her absence, and begin to drift apart from each other as well. It is a mutual decision to leave their Greek fantasy several weeks early, as neither can find a reason to stay-or to stay together, for that matter.

At the last minute, just as they are to board the plane for home, Valerie rides up on a scooter to make up with her fond American friends-she has missed them even more than they missed her! They stay all summer long.

Comment: the story is pretty thin, and a few more shots could have made this an X-rated film, but the scenery and cinematography are wonderful, and there is not even the slightest hint of exploitation. Also, this is one of the first FFTTM`s YMP ever saw on cable, so it has sentmental value as well.
