Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) Paramount

Starring: Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson, Craig Scheffer, Lea Thompson, Maddie Corman, John Ashton, Elias Kateas, Candace Cameron

She plays the drums (oh so cool!) while he walks the tightrope of the rails on the wrong side of the tracks, as straight as the social rules which govern both their lower middle class teenage high school social lives, until our boy Eric forgets his tomboy platonic gal pal Mary as well as his college dreams to pursue a cute, but seemingly accessible rich girl.

Lea`s in a rebound situation with the rich Craig, but shows some real interest in Eric in the meantime. Social pressure mounts on Lea, and she is sensitive, as she has more style than money. Also, Mary, the little drummer girl, comes to exert pressure on hapless, but not quite helpless Eric.

Determined to stand up for his own dignity and equality, Eric goes on to plan an elaborate evening for himself and the woman of his dreams, which is to end at the home of his rich, romantic rival, where our hero knows some trouble has been planned for him. Mary volunteers to chauffeur for the evening, partly to protect him, partly to anger the other woman.

Some unexpected help gets Eric through his trial by fire, but honesty compells both he and the lovely Lea to admit that they really don`t belong together. Eric runs off and meets up with the retreating Mary, and they embrace to a bad version of "Can`t Help Falling in Love with You."

Trivia: Notice the similar plot, but different conclusion from Pretty in Pink. Also, cameo by future TV star and younger sister of Kirk, Candace Cameron. Maddie Corman was in Seven Minutes in Heaven, one of YMP`s Top Ten FFTTM`s.
