We`ve got the time-tested, tried-and-true formula for teen hijinx here: a little bit of innocent fun which the `rents have forbidden for no important reason. Sarah and Helen want to be dancers on their local teen TV dance program-sure, the outfits are dorky in an early New Wave style, but Duran Duran and Culture Club will always live on for some of us, though poor fashion is not the reason for parental objections.
Our heroines, both Catholic school girls, take dance classes, but long to express themselves more freely-or something like that. Our girls sneak out of their bedroom windows at night and lie to the nuns during the day to...dance! Sarah J wins in the initial rounds, but must join with a public school boy to actually win the contest. Her rich, jealous parochial school rival, whose father employs Sarah`s dad, is to be the ultimate rival for the TV dance contest.
Helen encourages Sarah to d*mn the torpedoes, and the latter goes full speed ahead to win the final dance contest, fall in love with her formerly-hated partner, totally diss her female rival, win over the rich boss`s admiration, and regain her own Dad`s respect.
Trivia: a very brief cameo of Robert Downey, Jr when the slobs trash the snob`s country club reception. Also, Helen, the major instigator, would later win a Best Actress Oscar-go figure!
