Poplar Bluff to St. Louis (Iron Mountain Junction)

From Poplar Bluff (MP 165.5), where there is a passenger station, the former Frisco line once ran northeast, the main freight line heads east to join up with the SSW at Dexter for the joint line north to East St. Louis, and the passenger line heads north through Iron Mountain to St. Louis. The speed limit is 40 mph leaving the junction. Two Main Tracks reduce to single track, CTC, at Black River Junction, where the line turns north and the speed limit rises to 55-40, and the line turns twistily, generally, northwest at Mengo, passing Hilliard, a spur at Wilby (MP 155.4), Hendrickson, Keener, Blum, the 4,418 ft. siding at Williamsville (MP 144.2), where a Frisco line once crossed at grade and another line once left to the north, a detector at MP 142.8, Kerrigan, Mill Spring, Leeper (MP 133.1), where a short line once left to the west and the line turns curvily, and generally, north, and the 6,560 ft. siding at Piedmont (MP 127.9-126.5).

There are four grade crossings in town, and three in the fields, the speed limit rises to 55-50, and the line turns northeast past a spur off on the east side to a cement plant (that has its own switcher), Intermediate Signals, a wooded area, a bridge over a dirt track, a grade crossing, fields beyond a line of trees, a road bridge overhead, the 4,334 ft. east side siding at Gads Hill (MP 118.2-117.2), with a road alongside to the east that then turns away, extra track on the east side, and a grade crossing within the siding, a grade crossing, then more woods, north at Des Arc, past a spur at North Des Arc (MP 111.8), west past a road alongside to the "east", a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a road bridge overhead, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, the 4,538 ft. " west" side siding at Annapolis (MP 108.9-107.9), where the speed limit falls to 45-40 as the line turns curvily due north, and a road alongside to the west.

The line passes Sabula, a spur on the west side to a plant west of the road at Chloride (MP 100.1), where the speed limit is 60-50, a detector at MP 98.0, where the speed limit is 55-50, two dirt track grade crossings, an embankment, a spur at Glover (MP 97.8), where the speed limit is 45 mph, and Hogan, and turns northeast past the 4,243 ft. east side siding at Tip Top (MP 92.3-91.5), where the speed limit has risen to 60-50, a dirt track grade crossing, a rocky cutting, a road bridge overhead, a dirt track grade crossing and a dirt road grade crossing, and curvily north at Arcadia, where there is a former depot on the west side, past a bridge over a river, a road bridge overhead, SR 21 on the west side, a bridge over a road below, Ironton, a grade crossing, Pilot Knob, a dirt road grade crossing, Lopez, a spur on the west side at Middlebrook (MP 83.1), where there was once a short line to the west, a grade crossing, and a spur at Iron Mountain (MP 80.7).

The speed limit falls to 55-50, past CP D078 (MP 77.2), a dirt road grade crossing, the 4,992 ft west side siding at Bismarck (MP 76.0-74.9), where the old depot is on the east side, with the Bonne Terre Industrial Lead Junction at MP 75.3, where a line from Delta once trailed in from the east and a line to Ste. Genevieve (out of service beyond Derby Junction, leaving only the line north to Bonne Terre in operation) leaves to the northeast, a grade crossing, a turn curvily north-northwest past a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Irondale, a detector at MP 64.3, a rocky cutting at Summit, a 4,349 ft. siding at Mineral Point (MP 61.3-60.4), where there was once a branch west to Potosi and the line turns north-northeast, a dirt track grade crossing, a road alongside to the east, and Pine Ridge Branch Junction (MP 57.7), where the eponymous branch trails in from the west and the line turns curvily northeast.

The 4,602 ft. west side Cadet siding starts at MP 57.7 and ends at MP 56.7, and the line passes a spur off to the east side, a grade crossing, a bridge over a river, Tiff, where it jogs east, three bridges over streams, woods to the east and fields to the west, a bridge over a stream, the 4,390 ft. east side siding at Blackwell (MP 51.8-50.7), where the speed limit is 60-50, with a dirt road grade crossing within the siding, a jog north-northwest, a dirt track grade crossing, and then northeast, a bridge over a stream,  Vineland, a rocky cutting, a turn just east of due north, a grade crossing, and the 6,359 ft, siding at DeSoto (MP 42.8, where the speed limit is 55-50, to MP 41.5, where it is 30 mph), with a street to the west in town, a grade crossing, and a yard and spur on the east side, within the siding.

There is a bridge over a stream, and a turn curvily northeast past a grade crossing, Victoria, a plant on the west side at Hematite, a dirt road grade crossing, a plant on the east side, a grade crossing, Ludwig, two bridges over rivers, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a through girder bridge overhead carrying the BNSF line coming north from Cape Girardeau, a bridge over a river, a road alongside to the east, a grade crossing, a rock cliff to the east, a valley to the west, a road bridge overhead, dual road bridges overhead (I-55), a grade crossing in town, the start of the 4,912 ft. east side Riverside siding at Pevely (MP 27.3), where the speed limit is 55-50, a road bridge overhead, extra track on the east side at a petrochemical plant, a spur from the southwest crossing the west leg of the wye with the line south along the river bank to Ste. Genevieve, and a turn north as the other leg of the wye trails in to the other end of the siding at Riverside (MP 26.3), on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

The line continues generally northward, along the river bank, past Intermediate Signals at Sulphur Springs, a bridge over a side river, a grade crossing, trees between line and river, Kimmswick, the 4,836 ft. east side siding at Wickes (MP 19.7-18.7), where the speed limit is 50 mph and the line edges north-northeast, with a grade crossing within the siding, a through truss bridge over a side river, woods still to the east of the line, a pipeline bridge overhead from a line on the river bank, a second pipeline bridge overhead, from another river terminal, the line back on the riverbank, a spur at Hillcrest (MP 17.8), trees between line and river again, Intermediate Signals at Cliff Cave, the line back on the riverbank again, and a detector at MP 16.2. By now, the line is well inside the St. Louis urban area, running through an industrial landscape along the river.

A spur at CF Industries (MP 11.0) trails in, where the speed limit is 60-50, a dirt road grade crossing within the industry (sand), a grade crossing, trees on the east side, Intermediate Signals, a grade crossing to riverside industry (rock), dual road bridges cross overhead and over the river (I-255 & US 50), Intermediate Signals at Triangle Spur (MP 10.8), and Intermediate Signals at Barracks (MP 9.8), where the speed limit is 55-50 and CTC ends in favor of Track Warrant Control with Automatic Block Signals, the former location of Ivory Yard, on both sides of the line (with four or five tracks still to the east), a bridge over a side river (River Des Peres Drainage Channel), signals, an in-plant grade crossing at "America", and Davis Junction (MP 6.8), where the speed limit is 15 mph, the Lespearance Industrial Lead continues along the river bank with the Apex Metal Finishing Company to its east, and the main line turns away northeast.

Passing now through the southwestern suburbs, the line passes a connector trailing in from the north (from the Lespearance Industrial Lead) at Broadway, grade crossings with Reilly Avenue, Water Street, Broadway, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Michigan Avenues, and a bridge over Ivory Avenue, and turns northeast at Broadway Junction (MP 6.4), where the speed limit is 25 mph and the Broadway Industrial Lead joins from the west at a wye junction. The main line turns north, past a grade crossing with Schirmer Street, dual highway bridges overhead (I-55), that same highway alongside to the east, a road bridge overhead (Loughborough Drive), Carondelet Park alongside to the east and west, and north-northeast past two road bridges overhead (Wilmington Avenue and Bates Street), and two grade crossings (Eichelberger Street and Wabash Street), to a grade crossing at Delore Street, where an industrial track continues north-northeast as the main line turns north, past grade crossings at Gustine Avenue and  Beethoven Avenue, Gravois Avenue, bridging overhead, a grade crossing at Meramec Street, Chippewa Street passing below, a grade crossing at Beck Avenue and a road bridge overhead at Morganford Road, where it turns northwest as industrial tracks once went off on both sides of the line (and a line still trails in on the east side).

Kingshighway Boulevard passes below, and the line turns north, past a derelict factory on the west side a road bridge overhead at Arsenal Street, extra track on the east side, a road bridge overhead at Columbia Avenue and a road bridge overhead at Southwest Avenue, and then northeast again, past a rail-served track plant on the east side, a grade crossing at Bischoff Avenue, a road bridge overhead at Kingshighway Boulevard, a grade crossing at Shaw Boulevard, dual highway bridges overhead at I-44, and a grade crossing at McRee Avenue to reach signals and the former Frisco main line at Iron Mountain Junction (MP 0.0), where the speed limit is 10 mph.
