Salisbury to Greensboro

At Salisbury (MP 333.3), the speed limit is 50 mph, a line from Albemarle trails in from the southeast, past a road bridge overhead, and a grade crossing just south of the depot, there is a cantilever signal bridge on the main tracks, a passenger track on the west side adjacent to the platform, a passenger station with restored depot on the west side of the line, a grade crossing, and a line to Asheville diverges to the west at a wye at Yadkin Junction, after which the speed limit rises to 60-50, past a formerly rail-served facility on the west side, a grade crossing, extra track on the west side, four to six yard tracks on the west side at Old Spencer Yard, west of the North Carolina Transportation Museum on the site of the former Southern Railway's main Spencer Shops  on the west side of the line at Spencer, a large road bridge overhead, signal bridges, a closed grade crossing, a road alongside to the west, MP 328, Duke (MP 327.4), where the speed is 45 mph and a spur heads east to the Duke Power Plant on the west bank of the Yadkin River.

There is a deck truss bridge across that river, a road bridge overhead, a turn to the east and then northeast at the south end of Spencer (Linwood) Yard (MP 325.0), on the west side of the line, where the speed limit rises to 79-60-50, with the Yadkin River alongside to the east, signal bridges and crossovers alongside the yard and the river, at Sharp (MP 324.5), a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, and a signal bridge at Lee (MP 323.0), the north end of the yard, where the line turns north-northeast with speed limit 60-50 on the curve, a bridge over a stream, and a signal bridge (Intermediate Signals) at Maybelle (MP 319.4), where it turns northeast, again with speed limit 60-50 on the curve and 70-50 thereafter, with a rail-served industry on the west side, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a road bridge overhead, and a grade crossing in Lexington.

The Winston-Salem Southbound crosses at grade at Lexington (MP 316.8), where the speed limit is 65-50, and the line passes dual road bridges overhead, a road bridge overhead, MP 315, a dirt track grade crossing, Lake (MP 314.0), where single track begins with speed 50-45 through the turnout (and all other such turnouts), a detector at MP 313.9, where the speed limit is 70-50, three grade crossings, Bowers, where it turns east and double track resumes, with speed limit 79-60-50, a street alongside to the west, a grade crossing, a small museum on the west side, Intermediate Signals at Thomasville (MP 306.0), where there is extra track on the west side, a bridge over a street, and a grade crossing, and the line turns north-northeast, past a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge at Varner (MP 303.5), dual road bridges overhead, a formerly rail-served industry on the west side, a bridge over a divided road, and a detector at MP 301.9.

The line turns east-northeast, past a spur on the west side serving a facility with silos, three grade crossings, a road bridge overhead, an island platform with umbrella shed in a cutting with retaining walls on either side, an overhead pedestrian bridge, and depot to the east at High Point (MP 299.2), site of a number of furniture factories, where High Point, Thomasville & Denton and NS lines trail in from the south and the speed limit is 65-50, past a road bridge overhead at the north end of the station, two more road bridges overhead, a signal bridge at Hoskins (MP 298.0), where single track starts again and the speed limit falls to 60-50, a road bridge overhead, a wide road bridge overhead at an acute angle, a road bridge overhead, a wide road bridge overhead, a street alongside to the west, a grade crossing, dual road bridges overhead, two grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, two grade crossings, a bridge over a road, dual road bridges overhead, Jamestown, where the speed limit rises to 65-50, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Hilltop, where the line turns northeast and the speed limit rises to 79-60-50, a new bridge over a divided highway under construction, a grade crossing, and a large facility on the west side.

There is a detector at MP 291.5, Cox (MP 289.3), where two tracks start again and the line turns east-northeast and the speed limit falls to 65-50 again, a wide road bridge overhead, a street alongside to the west, a bridge over a road, Intermodal Yard on the south/east side of the line and a signal bridge and wye on the north side where the NS line to Winston-Salem departs to the west, signals north/east of the wye, Pomona (MP 286.8), west end of the eponymous yard on the south side of the line, where the line singles again, with the Pomona Yard offices on the north/west side of the line, a road bridge overhead, Elm (MP 284.4), where the line doubles again there is a large wye with a line south to Sanford and there was once a flat crossing with that line continuing northward, a bridge over a rail line below, a road bridge overhead, extra track on the west side, a bridge over a street intersection, and the passenger station at Greensboro (MP 283.9), with two island platforms, each with an umbrella shed, one on each of the diverging lines where the line to Raleigh and Durham, used by the Carolinian, leaves to the east and the main line turns north.
