Oliver Junction to Meridian

Oliver Junction (MP 194.1) is the north apex of a flat crossing with connectors in all four quadrants, with the former Southern Oliver Yard to the south, the former Southern line to the harbor area heading east, and the New Orleans Terminal line heading to the lines to the west, and to New Orleans Union Station, heading west, with speed limit 15 mph on all lines. From Oliver Junction, the former Southern double track, automatic block signals, main line heads north, on the west side of the Almonaster Avenue elevated roadway, which bridges over the northeast quadrant connector and the line continuing east, with overall speed limit 79-55, past "NE" tower (MP 193.5), where the speed limit is 40 mph over the flat crossing with the former L&N, dual I-10 bridges overhead, a bridge over Gentilly Boulevard, a turn east (speed limit 50 mph on the curve), with Press driver bridging overhead on the curve, where a line from the University of New Orleans once trailed in from the west, with Leon C Simon Drive alongside to the north, a detector at MP 190.8, a through truss drawbridge (MP 190.1, speed limit 45 mph) over the north end of the Industrial Canal, Airport (lakeshore), Hayne Boulevard running alongside to the south, a gentle curve along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain, with freight speed limit 30 mph to MP 184.1, east-northeast past  Intermediate Signals at Seabrook, an acute angle road bridge overhead, Citrus,  northeast past Intermediate Signals at Little Woods, "X" Tower (MP 181.8), where the number of tracks reduces to one, a detector at MP 181.6, and Intermediate Signals at  South Point (MP 179.x), where the speed limit is 45-40, with extra track on the east side.

The line crosses Lake Pontchartrain on a concrete trestle (speed limit 30 mph) just a few feet above the water, with signals near the south end, the US 11 road bridge alongside to the east,  a through-truss opening span near the north end, to North Shore, and then passes a grade crossing, an 8,994 ft. siding on the west side at Woods (MP 169.0), where there is an extra track and a dirt road on the east side, two grade crossings, a bridge over a stream, US 11 alongside to the east, two closed dirt road grade crossings, and a grade crossing at the south end of the passenger station at Slidell, with a brick depot on the east side and station parking lot to the east of that, where the line turns north-northeast, there is an extra track and a former New Orleans Great Northern line once turned away north-northwest, a grade crossing at the north end of the station, and the signals at Slidell (MP167.3).

There are three grade crossings, an angled road bridge overhead carrying US 11 from the east side to the west side, a grade crossing with a divided street, a detector at MP 165.6, dual road bridges overhead, a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, a spur heading away on the east side, Alton, a grade crossing, US 11 alongside to the west, a grade crossing, a spur to an industry on the east side, St. Joe, a road under construction (in August, 2007), a grade crossing, the 5,900 ft. west side siding at Pearl River (MP160.1) where there is an extra track and a New Orleans Great Northern line once turned away west-northwest, with three grade crossings within the siding, a spur trailing in on the east side, an embankment, and West Pearl River (MP 159.4), where the line bridges across the Pearl River on a through truss drawbridge (speed limit 45 mph).

The line crosses into Mississippi with piney woods on both sides of the line, at Benton, and passes a grade crossing, a bridge over a river, a detector at MP 156.7, Intermediate Signals, a through truss bridge over a river, a dirt track grade crossing, Nicholson (MP152.6), where there is a yard (extra track on the east side), a branch from the Stennis Space Center trails in from the southeast and one to Goodyear heads northwest, a grade crossing, the 8,520 ft east side siding at Picayune (MP 149.0), where there are two grade crossings in town, a road alongside to the east, an extra track and a passenger platform on the east side, a concrete pad on the east side where the depot once was, two grade crossings in town north of the siding, Intermediate Signals at Richardson, a bridge over a dirt road in the woods, two dirt road grade crossings, two grade crossings, and a detector at MP 146.0.

There are two grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at Carriere, where the line starts to curve a bit (speed limit 65-55 on the curves), a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road alongside to the east, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing in the piney woods, Intermediate Signals at McNeill, a road alongside to the east, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Tyler, a detector at MP 135.7, a grade crossing in the piney woods, Intermediate Signals at Millard, a grade crossing in the piney woods, the 11,817 ft. siding on the east side at Derby (MP 131.6), where there is an extra track on the east side, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at St. Regis (~MP 127), a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, the 4,400 ft. siding on the east side at Poplarsville (MP 125.1), where the speed limit is 50 mph, and there is an extra track on the east side, a grade crossing, a bridge over a road below, two grade crossings, a dirt road grade crossing, a detector at MP 123.0, a turn northeast past Intermediate Signals at Orvisburg, two dirt road grade crossings, a spur trailing in on the west side, a turn north, with speed limit 45 mph on all the curves, and then north-northeast (55 mph to MP 114.5) at Intermediate Signals at Hillsdale, a detector at MP 115.3, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, Intermediate Signals at Red Top, a grade crossing at the south end of the 6,198 ft. siding on the west side at Lumberton (MP 112.4), where the speed limit is 55 mph, there is a bridge over a stream and a grade crossing within the siding, an extra track on the west side north of the siding (with MP 112 north of the extra track), and a Gulf & Ship Island line once crossed at grade.

The line continues north past a grade crossing, a grade crossing in the woods, a bridge over a road below, two extra tracks on the west side (which perhaps used to be a fuel rack or tank car filling point), Platonia, a grade crossing, spurs off to the west side, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a dirt road below, Intermediate Signals at Talowah, a bridge over a road below, a detector at MP 104.3, a grade crossing in the town of Purvis, the 1,087 ft. "siding" on the west side at Purvis (MP 101.6), where the speed limit falls to 65-55 to MP 97.4, there is a road bridge overhead, an extra track, Pontiac, where a spur heads northwest to the Hess Oil Black Creek refinery, and the line jogs east before turning back north, Intermediate Signals at MP 98.6, a road bridge overhead, a through girder bridge over a stream, Okahola, where a line from the continuous loop at the South Mississippi Electric Power Association Okahola Steam Plant trails in from the southwest, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a turn northeast at MP 96, past  the 11,537 ft. siding on the west side at Richburg (MP 94.5), where there is a grade crossing and an extra track on the east side, a detector at MP 90.9, where the speed limit is 40 mph, a grade crossing, a bridge over a divided highway, a spur trailing in on the east side, a grade crossing, a former wye with the Bonhomie, Hattiesburg & Southern on the southeast side, a bridge over a divided road below, four grade crossings, a bridge over a stream, a flat crossing (MP 85.4, 25 mph) with a former Gulf & Ship Island line (now IC), with a connector in the northwest quadrant and a grade crossing within the connector, and Hattiesburg (MP 85.3), where there is an Amtrak station on a "siding" on the east side, with a brick depot, a stuffed-and-mounted 2-8-2 steam locomotive on the southeast side north of the depot, a yard on the northwest side of the line (and three yard tracks on the east side), and a spur on the southeast side of the line.

There is a through truss bridge across the Leaf River, a grade crossing, a turn north past Petal, where there is a concrete pad on the east side where the depot used to be, and a street alongside to the east, a grade crossing, dual road bridges overhead, a bridge over a stream, a spur from a petroleum facility on the east side, a grade crossing just within the south end of the 10.648 ft. siding (and five yard tracks and three spurs) on the east side at Dragon (MP 80.3), two grade crossings within the siding, a spur from a cement plant trailing in at the north end of the siding, a grade crossing just north of the siding, a grade crossing, two grade crossings and a road alongside to the east in the town of  Eastabuchie, a detector at MP 77.0, a curve northeast, Intermediate Signals at MP 75.6, a grade crossing, and then a curve north again, two grade crossings, a 1,879 ft. siding on the east side at Moselle (MP 72.7), where there is a short extra track, a turn north-northeast (50 mph on the curve), Intermediate Signals at Tawanta (speed limit 45 mph), a spur on the east side heading away, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Melrose (speed limit 50 mph), spurs on the west side serving industry, Intermediate Signals at MP 64.8, two grade crossings, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, two grade crossings in the town of Ellisville (speed limit 60-55), where a Gulf, Mobile & Northern line once headed east and a spur still does, a grade crossing, a bridge over a river, a grade crossing, a detector at MP 63.0, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, Cox, a dirt track grade crossing at the south end of the 11,450 ft. siding on the east side at Shows Field (MP 59.3), where a spur trails in from the northwest, a spur on the southeast side to Masonite Corporation, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead with a second one being constructed (in 8/07) just to its south, and an erstwhile Gulf & Ship Island line once trailed in on the north side at Laurel (MP 56.4), where there are two extra tracks on the west side, a road bridge overhead, three grade crossings, a divided highway alongside to the west, a passenger station with a brick depot on the east side, and a yard, and a Gulf Mobile & Northern line once crossed at grade (MP 56.0, with speed limit 30 mph when it existed) east of the passenger station, followed by a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a road, three grade crossings, and Intermediate Signals and a detector at MP 54.3.

The former Southern main then trends north-northeast, with speed limit briefly 55 mph before the 79-55 resumes, starting out almost due north, then turning northeast past a bridge over a road, the 11,872 ft. siding on the east side at Hawkes (MP 50.8), with a dirt road grade crossing and a dirt track grade crossing within the siding, where the speed limit falls to 70-55 and a two-track line heads away on the east side, a grade crossing, dual road bridges overhead, three grade crossings, a detector at MP 48.0, and Intermediate Signals at Sandersville, where an extra track heads away on the east side, north past a grade crossing, petrochemical tanks on the west side, served by a spur that then trails in, Intermediate Signals at MP 44.x, Markwald, two bridges over streams, northeast past a through girder bridge over a river, a dirt road grade crossing just north of the south end of the 4,345 ft. siding on the east side at Heidelberg, where there is extra track on the west side and the 79-55 speed limit resumes, east at Intermediate Signals at Vossburg, past a detector at MP 36.0, where the speed limit falls to 45 mph to MP 35.1, 40 mph at MP 35.1, and 55-50 from MP33.9 to 33.3, and then just east of due north past a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals, a bridge over a road below, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, the 6,031 ft. siding on the west side at Barnett (MP 30.5), with a grade crossing and a dirt road grade crossing within the siding, two dirt road grade crossing in the woods, a bridge over a stream, and MP 29.2 to 28.2, where passenger speeds are limited to 60 mph, with Intermediate Signals (Liding) near the latter.

There are Intermediate Signals at Pachuta, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, a detector at MP 24.3, and Intermediate Signals at Beatrice (~MP 23), a turn northeast (speed limit 65-55 on the curve), east-northeast (speed 60-55 on the curve) past a grade crossing, a spur trailing in on the west side, Intermediate Signals at Wautubbee (speed limit 45 mph in town), a wide road bridge overhead, a grade crossing and Intermediate Signals at Enterprise, northeast past a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, a spur heading away on the east side, two grade crossings within a town, with a cemetery between them on the east side, a grade crossing, a bridge over a river, and a dirt track grade crossing,  to the 11,300 ft. siding on the east side at Basic (MP 13.3), with three dirt track grade crossings within the siding, where the speed limit is 70-55, north past three dirt road grade crossings, a track edging away on the east side, a detector at MP 9.9, where the speed limit is 65-55, Intermediate Signals at MP 9.8, a dirt track grade crossing, two dirt road grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Savoy, a bridge over a big stream, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a river, and Arundel, and north-northeast past MP 2.3, where the speed limit drops to 30 mph, US 11 alongside to the west, a bridge over a river, Intermediate Signals at Shops, spurs from an industrial facility on the east side trailing in, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, an Air Force Base or airport across the road to the west, a grade crossing, a spur into the airfield to the west, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, extra track on the west side and on the east side, a flat crossing with the former ICG line headed west, now owned by KCS, and West Meridian, where a connection from that same line trails in from the west and the line turns east with two tracks on the west side, past a spur from a cement facility on the south side trialing in, a grade crossing, the Meridian Yard (MP 0.7), with a Norfolk Southern locomotive facility and 3-4 yard tracks on the south side of the line, a road bridge overhead, and Intermediate Signals (signal bridge) at 27th Street (MP 0.3), where a former Mobile & Ohio line now owned by Meridian Southern Railway, trails in from the southwest (on the south side of the line), past a road bridge overhead, and a ten track yard on the east side of the line, with a six-seven track yard on the east side continuing past the passenger station at Meridian (MP 0.0), where the depot is on the north side, with three platforms and umbrella sheds serving three tracks. There are private cars (or a museum) in a spur on the north side at the east end of the station.
