Lynchburg to Orange

The speed limit drops to 40 mph at MP 173.8, there is a wye on the east side with a track connecting to the former Norfolk & Western a half mile further west, Durmid (MP 173.5), where a former N&W line passes underneath and the line then passes under the ex-N&W at Cotton Mill Trestle, a connector to the former C&O James River line and facilities on the south bank of the river turns away east, the main line passes over the Campbell Trestle over an industrial spur, and enters the Kemper Street station (depot to the east) at Lynchburg (MP 172.5), where there is a road bridge overhead just north of the station. The line passes over the Buckwater Trestle, where N&W lines once passed below, past Rivermont (MP 170.9), where the line singles, and a detector at MP 170.8, passes through Rivermont Tunnel, and turns north-northeast on the James River trestle over the CSX (ex-C&O) James River line from Richmond to Clifton Forge, and then the James River (in two segments, with an island in the middle).

A Southern line once trailed in from the southeast, along the river bank, and the line passes a grade crossing, Harris (MP 169.1), where double track resumes, through the woods, and the speed limit rises to 55-50, a road bridge overhead, Montrose, where the speed limit rises to 65-50, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at Winesap, where the line turns northeast and the speed limit falls to 55-50, a road bridge overhead and a dirt road grade crossing, to Monroe (MP 165.1), and continues northeast along the foothills (“piedmont”), past Intermediate Signals (a signal bridge) at McIvor (MP 164.1), where the speed limit is 60-50, Intermediate Signals at Coolwell, where it is 55-50, a road bridge overhead, a spur on the west side, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at Angelo (MP 160.8), where the speed limit is 60-50 and single track begins (speed limit 50-45 over this and all other such turnouts), a bridge over a road below, a bridge over an Interstate highway, Sweet Briar, where the speed limit is 65-50, Intermediate Signals at Amherst, where there is an old depot to the west and a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, a slide fence to the west side in the woods, a bridge over a river, a bridge over a road, New Glasgow, Tye River (MP 150.1), where there is a detector, the speed limit is 55-50, there is extra track and a short line once headed northwest and double track resumes, a dirt road grade crossing, Kingswood (MP 148.0), where the speed limit rises to 79-60-50, crossovers with a signal bridge at Arrington, a spur on the west side, a road bridge overhead, fields beyond the lineside trees, a signal bridge at Oak Ridge (MP 143.4), where single track begins again with a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at  Shipman, Intermediate Signals at Elmo, Rockfish, where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph and a line once headed east, Faber, where the speed limit is 50-45 with stretches of 50 mph on either side, Hamner (MP 132.0), where double track resumes and the speed limit becomes 60-50, Covesville, where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph, Applegate (MP 126.6), where the speed limit is 65-50 and the line singles again, North Garden, Red Hill (MP 120.4), where there is extra track and double track resumes, Emerson, where the line turns east-northeast (55-50 on the curve), Teel, and Charlottesville (MP 112.2), where the University of Virginia is on the west side, approaching the crossing, the CSX line used by the Cardinal crosses east-west at grade and the Amtrak station is in the northeast quadrant, with speed limit 20 mph on the platform track and 25 mph on the further track, and a road bridge overhead just north of the depot.

There are four or five grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, the line turns north-northeast, with speed limit 65-50, past Rio (MP 109.9), where the double track reduces to single and the line turns northeast with speed limit 60-50, Proffit, where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph, a bridge over a river/stream, Gilbert (MP 102.0), where there is extra track, Burnley, where the line turns east, Harlow (MP 97.0), extra track on the west side, a grade crossing, two grade crossings in the woods, Intermediate Signals at Barboursville, where the line turns east-northeast (55-50 on the curve), two grade crossings in the woods, Somerset, Weyburn (MP 92.1), where the speed limit is 65-50, there is extra track on the north side, a signal bridge, a grade crossing, and the line singles again, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at MP 89.x, a road bridge overhead, an old depot on the west side at Montpellier, a road bridge overhead, May (MP 87.1), where double track resumes, two dirt road grade crossings, a spur on the north side, a grade crossing, and Orange (MP 84.7), where the approach speed is 40 mph, there is extra track, a bridge over a road below just west of the junction, and that same CSX line trails in from the south (30 mph on the junction), as the line turns north.
