Cary to Hamlet

At MP 164.8, the single track NS Greensboro line turns away northwest while the CSX S-line drops to single track and edges west-southwest to Fetner (MP 165.0), with speed limits 35 mph on both tracks (Cary city ordinance). The Amtrak Cary station lies in the 'vee' of the separating lines, west of a grade crossing, with a platform on each track, at MP 165.3. South of Cary, the old Seaboard Air Line route heads curvily southwest, single track, CTC, with overall speed limit 79 mph for passenger trains and 60 mph for freights, past MP 165.7, where the 35 mph speed restriction ends, and a local speed limit of 60 mph for passenger trains starts, MP 166.5, where full line speeds begin for all trains, a detector at MP 168.3, a speed restriction of 45 mph between MP 170.6 and MP 171.7, the 19.5 mile south-facing Durham Spur (the one-time Durham Southern) on the west side at MP 171.0, with additional storage tracks (10 mph), which used to continue south as the erstwhile Durham Southern, and the 5,5554 ft northbound siding and 4,833 ft. southbound siding (speed limit 25 mph) at Apex (MP 171.1).

There is a passenger speed limit of 65 mph between MP 171.7 and MP 172.5, and a speed limit of 55 mph between MP 172.5 and MP 173.5, where full line speeds resume, New Hill (MP 177.3), the NS line south to the Shearon Harris Power Plant bridges overhead at Bonsal, the 4,847 ft. siding at Merry Oaks (MP 181.1), MP 183.6, where passenger speeds drop to 65 mph for a curve to the southwest,  MP 185.0, where passenger speeds drop to 60 mph for a curve to the west-northwest, where there was once a spur south to a power plant (now served by NS only), MP 186.9, where full line speeds resume, the 5,705 ft. east side siding at Moncure (MP 187.3), where the line turns south-southwest and bridges over the Cape Fear River, past a detector at MP 190.9, a passenger speed restriction of 65 mph between MP 194.5 and MP 194.9 where a Norfolk Southern line bridges overhead, and the 7,310 ft. east side siding (speed limit 25 mph) at Colon (MP 195.9).

The line turns south-southwest, past a speed restriction of 35 mph between MP 198.2 and MP 200.4, through Sanford, the 4,198 ft. northbound siding, 2.558 ft. center siding and 4,745 ft. southbound siding at Sanford (MP 198.9), where there is a spur on the east side and a flat crossing with the Atlantic & Western Railway, a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 200.4 and MP 201.0, a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 201.0 and MP 203.9, a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 203.9 and MP 205.9, Lemon Springs (MP 205.9), a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 205.9 and MP 208.4, a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 208.4 and MP 210.5, a speed restriction of 50 mph between MP 210.5 and MP 211.1, a passenger speed restriction of 65 mph between MP 211.1 and MP 212.6, where full line speeds resume, the 7,289 ft. west side siding (speed limit 25 mph) at Cameron (MP 211.4), where the Moore Central Railway once headed west.

There is a detector at MP 213.8, the north-facing spur at Harristown (MP 215.2), Vass (MP 216.4), Lakeview, a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 219.4 and MP 223.9, Niagara, the north-facing spur at Manley (MP 223.8), a speed restriction of 50 mph between MP 223.9 and MP 224.2, a speed restriction of 35 mph between MP 224.2 and MP 225.8, through Southern Pines, Southern Pines (MP 225.0), where the Pinehurst Electric Railway once headed west, a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 225.8 and MP 228.1, a speed restriction of 45 mph between MP 228.1 and MP 229.2, through Aberdeen, and Aberdeen (MP 228.7), where the Aberdeen & Rockfish headquarters and terminal tracks are on the east side of the line (and its line heads southeast), there is a grade crossing, and the depot is on the west side of the line, where there is a wye with the Aberdeen, Carolina, & Western, heading northwest.

The Moore County Railroad once departed on the west side, and the line continues south-southwest, past a passenger speed restriction of 75 mph between MP 229.2 and MP 238.3, Pinebluff, MP 230.1, where a stretch of double track, CTC, begins, Addor (MP 232.8), where single track, CTC, resumes, a detector at MP 232.9, Keyser, a turn southwest, MP 238.3, where a stretch of double track, CTC, begins, with a speed restriction of 45 mph on the west track and a passenger speed restriction of 75 mph on the east track, Hoffman (MP 240.0), where a spur to Gibsons Mill once headed northwest and the line turns south-southwest again, MP 241.7, where single track, CTC, resumes, with full line speeds, Marston, a turn just west of due south, Cognac, a turn southwest again, North Hamlet Yard (MP 247.1), where Yard A begins on the southeast side, Diesel Shop Interlocking, where a connector from the middle of the yard trails in on the southeast side, South Hamlet Yard (MP 250.2), where the line turns just west of due south and Yard B ends, MP 250.4, where the West Arrival Track starts on the west side and the East Arrival Track starts on the east side, a speed restriction of 40 mph between MP 251.3 and MP 253.0, crossovers at Warmac/M-C Junction (MP 252.6), where the line turns southwest again, a speed restriction of 20 mph between MP 253.0 and MP 253.4, for the flat crossing, Monroe Junction (MP 253.2), where the connectors begin, Hamlet (MP 253.4), where there is a passenger station (depot on the west side of the line, in the northwest quadrant of the flat crossing [later moved to the southwest quadrant]), and a flat crossing, with connectors in the (north)east (to Bridges Street) and north(west) (to Raleigh Street) quadrants, a speed restriction of 50 mph between MP 253.4 and MP 254.0, and South Hamlet (MP 254.0).
