Brush (CO) to Lincoln (NE)

At Brush Center (MP 450.0), where the speed limit is 35 mph, the coal line to Sterling and Alliance turns away to the northeast while the single-track, CTC, passenger line continues east. There is a bridge over drainage and a bridge over a road, and connector south from Brush Junction on the coal line passes over a through girder bridge over the road that runs alongside to the north and trails in at East Brush (MP 453.2). On a clear day, the mountains of the front range are clearly visible to the west, but to identify them one must know what they are! There is a detector at MP 450.7, where the speed limit is 79-60, and that road alongside to the north, the line turns southeast past Story, a dirt track grade crossing, and the 5,718 ft. north side siding at Pinneo (MP 444.3), where there is no road just alongside to the north, a dirt road grade crossing and extra track on the north side within the siding, and a bridge over drainage, and east again at a dirt road grade crossing and Intermediate Signals at Xenia (MP 437.7).

The speed limit is 50-40 past a dirt track grade crossing, a cutting,  the 8,231 ft. south side siding at Akron (MP 430.8), with a road alongside to the north that then edges away, an old depot on the north side, grain silos to the north with an east-facing spur, a grade crossing, grain silos to the north with an east-facing spur, and grain silos to the north with a west-facing spur, and 79-60 again thereafter, past a dirt road grade crossing, a road alongside to the north starting again, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over drainage, a detector and Intermediate Signals at MP 426.6, two dirt road grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, the 6,674 ft. south side siding at Platner (MP 423.0), with a dirt road grade crossing, station sign "Platner", a grade crossing, and a bridge over an arroyo within the siding, a bridge over drainage, Intermediate Signals, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, the road still alongside to the north, two dirt road grade crossings in town, Intermediate Signals at Otis (MP 417.3), a dirt road grade crossing and the 6,658 ft. south side siding at Calhoun (MP 414.0), with a dirt road grade crossing within the siding.

The line crosses from Colorado into Nebraska at MP 368, past Sanborn (MP 366.2), where there is extra track on the north side on an east-southeasterly section, MP 366, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, MP 364, a dirt track grade crossing, MP 363, a dirt track grade crossing, MP 362, a bridge over a stream, the 6,716 ft. south side siding at Haigler (MP 361.1), with two dirt track grade crossings surrounding the station sign within the siding, where the line resumes its easterly heading, two dirt road grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over drainage, two dirt road grade crossings, the 7,017 ft. north side siding at Parks (MP 349.5), Doane (MP 344.1), and a detector at MP 343.8, with a road alongside to the north, and the line turns east-northeast past two dirt road grade crossings, the 7,270 ft. north side siding at Benkelman (MP 339.1), with grain silos on the north side, a road alongside to the north, a road bridge overhead, a road alongside to the north, Intermediate Signals, three dirt road grade crossings, a spur to silos on the south side and the 6,779 ft. south side siding at Max (MP 330.7).

The line turns just north of east past a detector at MP 327.00, the 6,659 ft. siding at Stratton (MP 320.4), where the line starts a deviation further north than the original, around a reservoir built long after the original line, a detector at MP 312.0, the 7,022 ft. siding at Trenton (MP 308.5) and the 6,584 ft. siding at Culbertson (MP 300.0), on the original alignment, where a branch from Imperial trails in from the northwest.

The line turns east-southeast, past Perry (MP 292.4) and then east to the 7,851 ft. siding at McCook, where the speed limit is 30 mph and there is a passenger station. The speed limit returns to 79-60 as the line edges just north of east, past Red Willow, the 6,711 ft. siding at Indianola (MP 276.3), the 3,638 ft. siding at Bartley (MP 270.3), and the 6,706 ft. siding at Cambridge (MP 262.6). There is a detector at MP 258.1 on another line deviation slightly northward of the original, the line turns due east past the 6,769 ft. siding at Holbrook (MP 254.3), where the deviation ends. Another such deviation slightly northward begins at Arapahoe (MP 248.3), ending west of the 6,732 ft. siding at Edison (MP 241.8), and the line continues just south of east, past the 7,603 ft. siding at Oxford (MP 234.0) and a detector at MP 223.0, to Oxford Junction (MP 231.5), where a line that runs just north of, and roughly parallel to, the Kansas border continues south-southeast, and the main line turns north-northeast.

The line passes Mascot, turns northeast past the 7,075 ft. siding at Atlanta (MP 218.3) and Clyde (MP 214.0), and east-northeast past the 8,675 ft. siding at Holdrege (MP 211.0), where a Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado Railnet line trails in from the west-northwest and a CB&Q branch once departed to the southeast, Wac, Funk (MP 204.4), the 7,434 ft. siding at Axtell (MP 197.8), Motala (MP 192.7), a detector at MP 191.1, the 7,270 ft. siding at Hinden (MP 188.3), where the line turns northeast, the 6,372 ft. siding at Heartwell (MP 178.7), and the 6,806 ft. siding at Kenesaw (MP 171.0), where a branch from Kearney once trailed in from the west and the line turns east. A MoPac line once crossed on the flat at Juniata (MP 162.6), there is a detector at MP 161.1, and a line trails in from the south with a wye junction at the west end of the 7,900 ft. siding at Hastings (MP 156.5), where the speed limit is 60 mph and there is a passenger station.

The UP line between Gibbon Junction and Marysville, KS, once crossed at grade at the east end of Hastings, a CB&Q line northeast to Aurora once left to northeast at the 4,800 ft. siding at Brick Yard (MP 154.9), where the speed limit is again 79-60, the UP line now crosses overhead on a through girder bridge, and the Aurora line now departs to the north at GH Junction (MP 153.5) on the east side of the UP embankment on the north side of that overbridge. The main line continues east past Halloran (MP 152.0), where a spur to the Hastings Industrial District heads south, Flickville, where the line turns just north of east, the 6,626 ft. siding at Inland (MP 147.5), and a 6,656 ft. siding at Harvard (MP 140.7), where the line turns east and a C&NW line whose alignment had been along the south side of the line west of here (from Hastings), once crossed at grade to head northeast.

There is a 6,590 ft. siding at Saronville (MP 132.3), a curve north-northeast past the 5,550 ft. siding at Sutton (MP 127.9), where the St. Joseph & Grand Island Railway once crossed at grade (heading southwest-northeast), and a curve to just north of east past a detector at MP 122.8, the 6,630 ft. siding at Grafton (MP 119.7), the 7,325 ft. siding at Fairmont (MP 113.0), where a Fillmore Western Railway line north from Geneva trails in from the south, a line once headed north to York, and a Fillmore Western Railway line to Milligan departs to the southeast. There is a 6,990 ft. siding at Exeter (MP 105.8), where another C&NW branch from the southwest to the northeast once crossed at grade, a 6.625 ft. siding at Friend (MP 97.2), and a detector at MP 93.6, before the line turns east-southeast past the 6,753 ft. siding at Dorchester (MP 88.1), east at the 4,039 ft. siding at Crete (MP 79.7), where the speed limit is 30 mph and a line north from Beatrice trails in from the south at the west end, and northeast at the east end, as a MoPac line continues eastward.

The line passes the 6,870 ft. siding at Berks (MP 76.2), where the speed limit is 65-50, and the 6,294 ft. siding at Denton (MP 69.4), where the speed limit is 60-50, before reaching Cobb (MP 66.9), where the speed limit is 75-60 and the freight line to Carling Yard continues ahead as the passenger line turns east. The line turns northeast at Burnham to the complex junction at Hall (MP 60.4), where yard limits start, the speed limit is 10 mph, there is a flat crossing in the southwest quadrant of the coal line coming east from Grand Island, which trails in from Carling Yard and the west, and the line northwest from Table Rock, which trails in from the south, northeast of that flat crossing, a flat crossing with a north-south UP line, and a separation between a freight line on the west side and a passenger line on the east side as both turn north past Lincoln Depot (MP 59.6), a large brick depot building on the east side of the line, with at least one track on which "preserved" equipment is stored between the depot and the current passenger platform, on the east side of the passenger line, which has a wooden umbrella shed for platform covering. There is an old water tank on the east side of the line, north of the station, before the lines come to a pair of overlapping wye junctions at Baird (MP 58.9).
