21st Street to 76th Street (C&WI)

CR-C&WI Junction (MP 2.02) is the junction where the old Chicago & Western Indiana tracks, originally from Dearborn Station but now just from the St. Charles Air Line, cross the tracks coming south from Chicago Union Station on the flat, with connectors in the southeast corner, and the CTA Orange Line overhead bridge just south of the flat crossing at MP 521 (on the former Conrail line), bridging over an east-west street (Cermak Road), a northeast-southwest street (Archer Avenue), 23rd Street and 23rd Place, the junction at 23rd Street, where the present-day Metra Orland Line branches off the Amtrak Chicago Terminal (erstwhile PRR) line onto the former Chicago & Western Indiana, now owned by Metra. The line heads due south, on the west side of the former PRR multi-track line, with the UP (ex-MP) Canal Street Yard on its west side, occupying the former locations of the C&WI Canal Street Yard and the C&EI 35th Street Yard, with all these lines bridging over 24th Street, 24th Place, and I-55 passing beneath Interstate 90/94 and 26th Street, after which there is a north-south street (Stewart Avenue) on the east side of the ex-PRR tracks, a bridge over an east-west street (28th Street), the south end of some tracks on the east side, two bridges over east-west streets (28th Place and 29th Street). Near 35th Street, the Chicago White Sox baseball stadium, Comiskey Park lies on the east side of the street east of the ex-PRR, followed by a bridge over 35th Street?, the Comiskey Park parking ,lots where the old stadium used to be prior to the mid-1990s, two bridges over east-west streets (one of which is Pershing Road), a bridge above the east-west connector from the former NYC entry to La Salle Street station west to Chicago Junction's Ashland Avenue Yard, with connectors to that line in the northwest and southwest quadrants at 40th Street (MP 4.0), and an old factory on the east side of the ex-C&WI line.

The line then passes the NS (ex-Wabash) 47th Street Yard on the west side of the line, with its south end at CP 47th Street (MP 4.9), where a Canadian National (Grand Trunk Western) line heads away due west to join its line from Railport, and there are four tracks on the east side of the line, the easternmost pair being the former PRR line, with a signal bridge overhead. The Metra line continues south, bridging over an east-west street (47th Street? 51st Street?) past the former Erie 51st Street Yards (on the west side of the line) to 55th Street, where the ex-Conrail, ex-PRR, 55th Street intermodal yard is visible on the east side, a bridge over an east-west street (Garfield Boulevard?), two extra tracks on the east side, two through girder bridges over east-west streets and four bridges over east-west streets, beneath a through girder bridge, and past CP 59th Street (MP 6.4), where a PRR line headed west once crossed at grade.

The CTA "Elevated" line bridges overhead, headed west to its Ashland terminus, and the line passes the former side platforms, with umbrella sheds in serious decline, of the erstwhile station at Englewood, a through girder bridge over an east-west street, two bridges over east-west streets, Normal Park, a through girder bridge over an east-west street, Hamilton Park, two bridges over east-west streets, CP 74th Street (NS Junction) (MP8.2), where the Orland Park line swings away to the west on the north leg of a wye with the NS (ex-Wabash) line to Decatur and beyond, a bridge over an east-west street, a street alongside to the east, a bridge over an east-west street, and housing alongside to the east, 76th Street (MP 8.4), where the south leg of that wye trails in, paralleled by a BRC line on the southwest side, and Metra ownership ends, with the line continuing due south, passing under the ex-Rock Island line now owned by Metra, with extra track on the east side south of the former CRI&P to 81st Street (MP 9.0),where an end-on junction is made with the UP (ex-C&EI) line that continues south from this location.
