East Durham to Greensboro

From East Durham (MP 57.4), where a line curves away to the north-northeast, the single track, CTC (installed at North Carolina's expense in 2004), Greensboro line continues northeast, past a flat crossing at that same location governed by an automatic interlocking with the Durham and Southern (speed limit 20 mph on the crossing), with a connector trailing in on the north side at the signals at D&S Junction. The overall speed limit is 59 mph for passenger trains and 49 mph for freight trains. Between MP 57.1 and MP 53.6, the speed limit is 30 mph for all trains, past a grade crossing, Durham Yard on the southwest side of the line, a curve to the north with the Durham & Southern alongside to the north/east, a wye junction on the east side with an NS spur to the Tobacco Belt Line, a grade crossing, a curve back to the northwest with the D&S still alongside to the northeast, past  yard tracks on the north side, a spur heading away on the north side, two grade crossings, a bridge over a street, two grade crossings, extra track on the north side, a bridge over a street at the east end of the Amtrak station at Durham (MP 55.2), which has a platform with umbrella shed on the south side of the line, and the former Durham Union Station, across the line at the same point.

There is a grade crossing, a bridge over a street, signals and another junction with the Tobacco Belt Line, curving away north, at Liggett & Myers Tobacco, a street alongside to the north, a grade crossing, a bridge over a path, a grade crossing, a bridge over a street, extra track to the north, a grade crossing, a street alongside to the north, and a grade crossing, to signals at West Durham. The speed limit rises to 45 mph from MP 53.5 to MP 51.8, as the line curves west, north-northwest, west-northwest, and north-northwest. There is a passenger speed limit of 55 mph on a curve to the west between MP 51.5 and MP 51.2, a bridge over US 15/501, and a spur trailing in on the north side, and speed limits of 45-40 on curves to the northwest between MP 50.9 and 50.4, past I-85 alongside to the north, a road bridge overhead, and a grade crossing.

The line curves west again at Funston (MP 49.1), where there is a 6,500 ft. north side siding, past a road bridge overhead and a dirt track grade crossing within the siding, northwest between MP 48.4 and 48.1 (speeds 45-40), past a bridge over a road, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Glenn (MP 46.4), where there is a 28 car spur trailing in on the north side, and two grade crossings, west-southwest between MP 47.3 and 47.1 (passenger speeds 55 mph), west between MP 46.5 and 45.6 (passenger speeds 55 mph), northwest between MP 45.3 and MP 44.9 (speeds 45-40), past a bridge over drainage, a bridge over a road in the woods, and a detector at MP 43.9, west between MP 43.7 and  Intermediate Signals at MP 43.4 (passenger speeds 55 mph), past a road bridge overhead, dual road bridges overhead (I-40), a spur trailing in on the north side from an industry, and a dirt road grade crossing, and northwest between MP 42.9 and 42.3 (passenger speeds 55 mph), past a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a dirt track, and a grade crossing.

There is a speed limit of 45-40 on a curve between MP 42.3 and 42.2, as the line passes Occoneechee, a passenger speed limit of 50 mph from MP 42.2 to MP 41.8, two grade crossings, a speed limit of 45-40 from MP 40.3 to MP 39.5, Intermediate Signals at MP 39.2, a bridge over a dirt track as the line turns west past a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over I-40/85, a grade crossing, and Hillsboro, a passenger speed limit of 55 mph from MP 38.9 to MP 37.7, past a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing,  a spur on the north side serving a large industry, and Intermediate Signals at Efland, and another passenger speed limit of 55 mph from MP 36.7 to MP 36.3.

The line edges west-northwest past Miles, a grade crossing just west of a spur heading away on the north side, a grade crossing, and  signals at Mebane (MP 32.6), where there is an 8,334 ft. siding, then west past four grade crossings, a road alongside to the north, a detector at MP 29.4, a speed limit of 45-40 from MP 28.6 to MP 27.9, past Intermediate Signals, a road bridge overhead, 50-45 from MP 27.9 to 27.8 and passenger speed limit of 55 mph from MP 27.8 to MP 27.4, as the line passes extra track on the north side, Intermediate Signals at Haw River, a bridge over a street, a speed limit of 45-40 from MP 27.1 to MP 26.3, and a passenger speed of 55 mph from MP 26.3 to MP 22.2 as the line turns northwest and passes a grade crossing, and Intermediate Signals at Graham, and a passenger speed limit of 50 mph from MP 22.2 to MP 21.9.

The line continues northwest past three grade crossings, a bridge over a highway (SR 49), a bridge over a street, the station at Burlington (MP 21.3), with brick depot and platform with umbrella shed to the north, a grade crossing just west of the station, a bridge over a street, the Burlington signals, a grade crossing, a street to the north, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Glen Raven, a grade crossing and a bridge over a road, turning southwest past a bridge over drainage and two grade crossings to Elon College (where the eponymous college is on the north side), a grade crossing, a street alongside to the north, and two grade crossings, west-northwest past a detector at MP 15.5 and Intermediate Signals at Gibsonville, west past four grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at Bell Run, a closed grade crossing, two grade crossings, three bridges over drainage, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, and a grade crossing, to the signals at McLeansville (MP 8.9), where there is a 10,080 ft. siding, and west-southwest past a grade crossing, two dirt track grade crossings, a dirt road grade crossing, a passenger speed limit 55 mph between MP 6.1 and MP 6.0, a bridge over a stream, a road bridge overhead, Four Mile, Intermediate Signals at Nursery, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 2.4, a grade crossing, a spur trailing in on the north side, a bridge over a divided highway (US 70), a bridge over a street, a grade crossing, a bridge over a road, and a bridge over a divided road, to Greensboro (MP 1.0), where the line joins the former Southern main line at Greensboro Old Station, which has platforms with umbrella sheds on both lines north of the junction and is again used by Amtrak.
