PREFACE

This book was written for the enjoyment of the descendants of the featured WINFREY families. We have started with the wills and marriages of several families which are recorded in parishes in England, and who might possibly have been related to us. None of these connections have been proven until we get to ONE JOHN WINFREY who was a drafted Militiaman who served in the Revolutionary War from Buckingham County, Virginia. After giving you what information we have on him, we have inserted our own Pedigree Chart to indicate the WINFREY ancestors and their wives who are featured in this writing. After this Pedigree Chart we will devote an entire chapter to each of my direct ancestors and his wife and her family. The first such chapter is Chapter 7, beginning on page 46, and will feature Rev HENRY WINFREY (2-4) 1767---1849 and his wife, SARAH “SALLY” THOMAS (2-5) 1772---1845. The same pattern will be followed through the rest of the book.

FootnoteIn a letter about the upcoming Winfrey Reunion at Burlington, CO, dtd 26 Apr 1982, Jim wrote the following: "Many of you know that I have been working on the WINFREY FAMILY history for over fifteen years and probably thought I would never get it published. WELL----I'm pleased to tell you it is printed and at the bindery now and promised to me before the first of June. If true I will have a load of them at the reunion so you can pick up copies for all your descendants without having to pay the extra cost of mailing and handling. There is nothing like this book in the United States about the Winfrey family. You're lucky to find 10 pages anywhere. This book is copyrighted and there will be copies in the Library of Congress as well as several State Libraries. The book is over 400 9x12 pages with pictures and facts about all your WINFREY ancestors and their wives back to pre Revolutionary War times. It is well done and bound in hard cover and you will be proud to have it in your library. I have all this WINFREY material and I don't want all these books cluttering up my basement so if you will pick up copies for yourself and descendants at the reunion I will make you a ONE TIME ONLY price you can't afford to pass up. $20.00 each or $225.00 a dozen. You can hardly buy a tank of gas for that and the book will last a lot longer. See you June 6, 1982 Jim"

From James Clifton Winfrey's Obituary: (d. 26 Jul 1982) "Jim became very active in the Columbine Genealogy Club and quite a history buff. He spent 15 years doing research, traveling many miles, and thousands of hours on his recently published, 414-page book, "The Winfrey Family." He spent his happiest hours on this project and his club work and truly left a wonderful legacy for his children, grandchildren and all his friends."

Note for Genealogists:  If you cannot obtain the book through inter-library loan, please feel free to contact me and I will glad to look up any information that might be in the book.  James Clifton Winfrey also authored an 87 page book entitled The Bennet Taylor Family, 1979,1980. It is also out of print. I have a copy of both the 1979 and 1980 editions and would be glad to look up info for interested parties in these books also.
