Dr. Smith is a chiropractic internist, having attended Pasadena College of Chiropractic and Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, graduating from the latter with honors in 1987. He completed post-graduate studies in diagnosis and internal disorders at Texas Chiropractic College in 1996. Desiring a stronger education in herbal medicine he continued his studies and became a Board Certified Naturopathic Physician in 1999. He specializes in the care and management of persons with immune disorders with an emphasis on HIV. His article "Chiropractic and the HIV+ Patient" has been published in The Internist, the Journal of the Council on Family Practice of the American Chiropractic Association.

Dr. Smith is founder and co-director of the Chiropractic Practice Rights Coalition of California, an organization dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the rights of chiropractic doctors to practice as primary care providers. He is an expert on the history of the chiropractic profession and legislation in the state of California.

As a chiropractic historian, Dr. Smith has been honored by the Association for the History of Chiropractic and has been published in their journal, Chiropractic History.
