About Private Neurology

What About Medicare?
We welcome Medicare patients on a private contract (private pay) basis. Dr. Huntoon has Opted Out of Medicare as per Section 4507 of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Medicare patients will be required to sign a government-approved private contract for medical care (See Patient Forms). No Medicare claim will be filed - neither physician nor patient are allowed to file a Medicare claim for services provided by Dr. Huntoon. Medicare patients cannot receive any reimbursement for services provided in our office. Government price-fixed fees and other Medicare fee restrictions (e.g. Limiting Charges) do not apply. Tests ordered by Dr. Huntoon (e.g. MRI, CT, X-Rays, labs), but provided by others, may be covered by Medicare as per Medicare regulations and policies.  Please note: Dr. Huntoon does not have an NPI number nor does he wish to apply for one.  Moreover, since Dr. Huntoon is a "non-covered entity" under HIPAA, he is not required by law to have an NPI number. An NPI number may be required by third party payors in order to receive reimbursement for tests ordered by Dr. Huntoon but provided by others.

What About HMOs and other types of Insurance?
We welcome patients who have HMO or other private insurance on a private pay basis. We cannot guarantee, however, that you will receive any reimbursement from your HMO or insurer for services provided in our office. You are welcome to file your own claim with your HMO or insurer, and we can help you with that, but we will not file the claim for you.  We do not provide CPT codes for claim forms.  Patients may attach a copy of the written report (consultation report, progress note etc.) to their claim form.  Third party payors are welcome to code services as they deem appropriate, based on the office record provided, but our office will not code visits for the third party payor.

What About Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)?
Our office welcomes patients who have chosen Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) combined with a qualified high deductible health plan.  HSAs allow people to take control of their own medical care and keep more of their own money - as opposed to turning it over to an HMO/insurer.

What About the Uninsured?
Our office welcomes the uninsured and underinsured on a private pay basis. Because we have eliminated the tremendous overhead costs associated with filing insurance claims and complying with government regulations (now numbering appx 132,000 pages!) and private HMO/insurance company rules, regulations and demands, we are able to provide medical care at an AFFORDABLE COST.

We also recognize that unexpected medical costs can sometimes cause financial strain. We offer convenient, no interest, payment plans to ease the burden. Payment plans are arranged on an individual basis with our office manager.
