Game Re-caps

02/22/02: The Montgomery Bears opened the 2003 Season, by playing Woodlands and New Caney, at Scotland Yard Ball Park.


04/22/02: The Montgomery Bears lost a heartbreaker to Brenham, 4-3, at Bear Field.  It very well may have been the last game, to "ever" be played, at Bear Field, as construction has started on the new sports complex.

Jesse Marshall (7IP,7H,4R,2ER,8K,2BB) picked up the loss, for the Bears.  Jesse ended the regular season with 100-K's, in 67-innings.  Leading the Bears' hitting attack were Stephen Spaugh and Shan Sullivan, who both had two hits.  Other Bears getting hits were Drew Tucker, Matt Yarotsky, Chase Whitehead and Derrick Washington.


04/22/02: The Montgomery Bears broke out the sticks, against Magnolia, defeating them 10 -1, on the road.  The Bears pounded out (14) hits, as they scored early and often, off of the Bulldogs ace, Sam English.  Casey Springer pitched a complete game two-hitter, allowing just one run, while racking up (10) K's.  Springer raised his season record to (8-3, 4-2), as he allowed just three balls out of the infield.  Leading the Bears hitting attack was Drew Tucker (2R, 2-2B's), Shan Sullivan (2H, 2R,RBI,SB), Matt Yarotsky (3R,2H,1-2B,RBI), Brandon Allen (2H,1R,RBI), Brandon Pizzino (2H) and Adam Enloe, who hit a mammoth 400ft+ homerun, to the left field alley.

The Bears clinched no worse than second place, in District 18-4A, as they raised their record to (17-7,7-2).  The Bears have won 14 of their last 16 games, while they have outscored their opponents 32-3, over the past four district games.  The Bears will host Brenham, Friday, as they will be playing for a share of the district title. The Bears now have (6) victories over previously ranked Top 10 Houston Area teams, including a run-rule victory over state ranked Jasper. 


04/19/02: The Montgomery Bears shut out Waller, 9-0, in a big district victory.  The Bears took out the whooping sticks, as they pounded out a "season high" 17 hits.  Jesse Marshall (7IP,2H,0R,0ER,10K,1BB) picked up the complete game shutout, as he limited the  Waller batters to just two singles.    Leading the Bears, with their bats, was Brandon Allen (4H, 1R, RBI), Matt Yarotsky (3-2B, 1R, 4-RBI) and Adam Enloe (2H).  Adding hits, for the Bears was Drew Tucker, Shan Sullivan, Stephen Spaugh, Chase Whitehead and Brandon Pizzino.


04/16/02: The Montgomery Bears run ruled Navasota, 10-0, at Bear Field.  Adam Enloe (2-HR, 5-RBI) and Matt Yarotsky (2-HR, 4-RBI) and Drew Tucker (HR, 2H, 2R, RBI) led the Bears with their bats.  On the mound, Casey Springer (5IP,0H,0R,0ER,13K,1BB) pitched a no-hitter. for the Bears.  Adding hits for the Bears was Shan Sullivan, Stephen Spaugh and Brandon Pizzino.


04/12/02: The Montgomery Bears took a thrilling come-from-behind victory, from the Huntsville Hornets, 3-2.  The Bears were held at bay, by Timmy Gray, for the 1st six innings.  A clutch 2-run single was hit by Adam Enloe, in the 7th inning, as the Bears took their 1st lead of the game.   Gray and Jesse Marshall (7IP,5H,2R,2ER,12K,1BB) locked up in another 18-4A pitching duel. Marshall struck out the side, in the bottom of the 7th, to seal the victory.

Drew Tucker, Brandon Allen, Shan Sullivan and Brandon Pizzino added hits, for the Bears.
Both teams played errorless ball, in one of the better played games of the season.  The Bears go to (4-2), in district, while Huntsville falls to (3-3). 


04/09/02: The Montgomery Bears dropped a heartbreaker, to Brenham, 3-2.  The state ranked Brenham Cubs and the Montgomery Bears locked up in a pitching duel, at Fireman's Field, tonight. Brenham scored on a 2-out double, followed by a game ending single, in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Muegge goes 6 innings, allowing 2-runs and 5-hits, with 3-K's. Pickering relieves in the 7th, to pickup the win. Casey Springer (6-2/3P, 5H, 3R, 1ER, 11K, 0BB) went the distance, for the Bears, giving up 3-runs on 5-hits, with 11-K's.  Derrick Washington lead the Bears with 2-hits, while Drew Tucker, Adam Enloe and Brandon Pizzino added hits.  It was an exciting high school baseball game, with several nice plays being made. 


04/05/02: The Montgomery Bears scored a run, in the bottom of the 7th, to take a 2-1 victory, against their district rival, Magnolia.  The game was a pitching duel between the Bears' Jesse Marshall (6-2/3P, 6H, 1R, 1ER, 9K, 4BB) and Magnolia's freshman sensation, Ryan Mitchell.  In the loss, Mitchell went 6-1/3 innings, giving up 4-hits, while picking up 5-K's.  Marshall went 6-2/3 innings, allowing 6-hits, while picking up 9-K's.  Casey Springer came in to pitch the final out, in the top of the 7th, striking out the only batter he faced.  Springer (6-2 season record) picks up the win, as the Bears' pinch runner, Vinnie Romano, scored the game winning run, on a sac-fly, by Shan Sullivan.

Matt Yarotsky picked up 2-hits, to extend his season long hitting streak, to 19-games.  Drew Tucker hit a double, with Brandon Allen adding a double.  With the win, the Bears' record is now (13-6, 3-1), which leaves them tied for 1st place, in district 18-4A.


04/02/02: The Montgomery Bears blanked Waller, 7-0, at Bear Field.  Waller came into the game, as the 4th ranked 4A team, in the Chronicle's Houston Area rankings.  The Bears raised their record to (12-6, 2-1), with the big victory. 

Casey Springer (7P, 3H, 0R, 0ER, 10K, 0BB) threw a complete game, 3-hit shutout, while allowing just one ball out of the infield.  Casey picked up 10-K's, without walking a batter, as he hit 89mph 5-times, tonight.  Matt Yarotsky provided the big blow, with a 3-run homerun, as he extended his hitting streak to 18-games.  Other Bears picking up hits were Stephen Spaugh, Adam Enloe, Shan Sullivan, Drew Tucker and Brandon Allen.


03/28/02: The Bears edged Navasota, 3-2, as they evened their district record to (1-1).  Jesse Marshall (7P, 3H, 2R, 0ER, 14K, 3BB) pitched his 3nd consecutive complete game victory, while picking up a season high 14-K's.  Stephen Spaugh and Brandon Allen led the Bears with two hits, each.  Adding hits, for the Bears, were Matt Yarotsky (17-game hitting streak), Chase Whitehead and Brandon Pizzino. 


03/26/02: The Bears lost a heartbreaker, to Huntsville, 5-4, in 8-innings.  The loss snapped the Bears 7-game winning streak.  Several key errors proved costly, as the Bears dropped their first district game.  Casey Springer (8P, 5H, 5R, 3ER, 4K, 2BB) picked up the loss, while throwing the entire 8-inning game.  Drew Tucker led the Bears with 2-hits, while Stephen Spaugh (1RBI), Matt Yarotsky (1RBI and 16-game hitting streak), Chase Whitehead (1RBI), Shan Sullivan and Brandon Pizzino added hits.


03/22/02: The Bears blanked Barbers Hill, 7-0, as they ran their winning streak to (7) games.  Jesse Marshall (7P, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 6K, 0BB) pitched his 2nd consecutive 2-hit shutout, as he kept the BH hitters off balance with his change-up and nasty curve.  Brandon Allen (2-2B, 2R), Chase Whitehead (2H, 3RBI), Matt Yarotsky (2H, 2R) and Brandon Pizzino (SacF, 2B, 3RBI) led the Bears, with their bats.  Derrick Washington and Stephen Spaugh added hits, for the Bears.  Matt Yarotsky pushed his hitting streak to 15-games, this season.


03/19/02: The Bears trounce 8th ranked Jasper HS, 17-6!  The Bears capitalized on (8) Jasper errors, while collecting numerous base-on-balls and 14-hits, as they ran away, with this one.  Casey Springer (6P, 8H, 6R, 5ER, 8K, 4BB) picked up the victory, pitching the complete game.  Casey raised his season record to (4-1), while topping out at 88mph, with his fastball.  The Bears bats were led by Adam Enloe (3H, 1-2B, 5RBI), Drew Tucker (Sac, BB, 2H, 2R), Derrick Washington (2H, 1-2B, 3R), Matt Yarotsky (2H, 1R, 1RBI) and Brandon Pizzino (2H, 1R, 1RBI).  Adding hits, for the Bears, were Stephen Spaugh, Brandon Allen and Chase Whitehead.  Vinnie Romano scored 3-times, as he displayed his speed.


03/15/02: The Bears swept a rare home doubleheader from Cleveland.

Montgomery 9 - Cleveland 0
Jesse Marshall (7P, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 12K, 3BB) pitched the shutout, in the opening game, while limiting Cleveland to two singles.  Jesse stuck out 8 of the last 10 batters that he faced.  Drew Tucker (2B, 1RBI), Chase Whitehead (2B) and Adam Enloe (HR, 2R, 3RBI) led the Bears with 2-hits, each.  Stephen Spaugh, Matt Yarotsky, Brandon Allen, Shan Sullivan and Brandon Pizzino added hits, for the Bears.  Again, the Bears played errorless ball, as they completed their 2nd straight shutout.

Montgomery 15 - Cleveland 0
Casey Springer (4P, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 4K, 1BB) picked up the victory, while throwing a 1-hit shutout.  Casey was clocked at 88mph, during the game.  Stephen Spaugh led the Bears with 3-hits and 3-RBI.  Matt Yarotsky added 2-hits and 4-RBI, all in the first inning.  Matt conitnues to lead the Bears with over a .500 batting average.  Also collecting hits were Derrick Washington (2RBI), Drew Tucker (3-runs scored), Brandon Allen, Chase Whitehead, Shan Sullivan, and Shawn Webb.  For the 3rd game in a row, the Bears were errorless, while pitching a 3rd straight shutout.

For the two games, the Bears had 21-hits, while limiting Cleveland to 3-singles.  In a side note, Stephen Spaugh leads the Bears with 20-RBI and a .744 slugging percentage.


03/14/02: The Bears defeated an over-matched Wheatley team, 16-0, in a 5-inning run rule game.  Trey Schurr (5P, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 7K, 0BB) picked up his 2nd victory, while pitching the shutout.  Drew Tucker led the Bears with 2-2B's and 2RBI, while Shan Sullivan contributed with a 2-run Homer.  Also collecting hits, for the Bears were Chase Whitehead, Adam Enloe, Ronnie Hessel, Matt Yarotsky (2RBI), Vinnie Romano (3RBI), Brandon Pizzino, Stephen Spaugh and Derrick Washington.  Defensively, the Bears did not commit an error, as they continued their torrid hitting.


03/09/02: The Bears competed in the El Campo Tournament, this past weekend.  While going (2-1) for the weekend, the Bears took the Consolation Championship.

Sweeney 4 - Montgomery 3
The Bears lost a heartbreaker, in the bottom of the 7th, as Sweeney pushed across an unearned run.  Casey Springer (6-1/3P, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 8K, 2BB) went the distance, for the Bears, on the mound.  After a rough 1st inning when Sweeney picked up three of their runs, Casey went on to pitch masterfully, for the remainder of the game.  Adam Enloe (2H, 2B, 1RBI) led the Bears, at the plate.  Matt Yarotsky (2B), Chase Whitehead and Shan Sullivan each collected hits, in the losing effort.

Montgomery 13 - Stafford 1
The Bears beat the "overmatched" Stafford bunch, in a 5-inning run rule affair.  Adam Enloe (5P, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 6K, 1BB) picked up the win on the mound, while going the distance.  Drew Tucker (2H, 3R, 2RBI), Stephen Spaugh (2H, 2B, 3R, 4RBI), Shan Sullivan (2H, 1RBI) and Brandon Pizzino (2H, 2R, 2B, 1RBI) led the Bears, with their bats.  Derrick Washington, Adam Enloe (2RBI), Chase Whitehead and Corey Spaugh added hits for the Bears.  Corey picked up his hit, in his first official varsity at-bat.

Montgomery 14 - Columbus 10 (Consolation Championship)
In a see-saw battle, the Bears rallied for 6-runs, in the bottom of the 6th inning, to pull out the victory, in gusting winds of 40mph.  As the wind wreaked havoc, the Bears committed 6-errors, which led to 7-unearned runs for Columbus.  On the mound Jesse Marshall (5-1/3IP, 8H, 10R, 3ER, 1BB, 10K) started out strong, striking out 7 of the first 9 batters.  After running into trouble in the 6th inning, Jesse was relieved by Trey Schurr (1-2/3P, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 3K, 0BB).  Trey picked up his 1st "varsity" victory, while holding Columbus scoreless, for the rest of the game.  Stephen Spaugh (2H, HR, 3RBI), Matt Yarotsky (2H, 3R, HR) & Drew Tucker (2H, 1R, 2RBI) led the Bear hitting attack.  Brandon Pizzino, Shan Sullivan and Derrick Washington added hits, for the Bears.

For the tourney, leading the Bears, at the plate, were Stephen Spaugh (4-8, 4R, 2B, HR, 7RBI), Drew Tucker (4-9, 4R, 4RBI), Shan Sullivan (4-8, 3R, 3RBI) & Matt Yarotsky (4-9, 6R, 2-2B, HR,).


03/05/02: The Bears beat Oak Ridge 6-5, at Bear Field.  Stephen Spaugh hit a game winning double, to drive in Drew Tucker, with the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.

Trey Schurr (4-1/3P, 6H, 2R, 1ER, 0K, 0BB) had a good outing, as he made his 1st start, on the mound.  Casey Springer (1-2/3P, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 4K, 1BB) had another good outing, while Jesse Marshall (1P, 1H, 3R, 3ER, 3K, 1BB) picked up his first win.   The Bears pounded out (10) hits off of OR's top two pitchers.  Leading the way, for the Bears, was Stephen Spaugh (2B, HR, 3RBI), Matt Yarotsky (2-2B, 2RBI) and Drew Tucker (1B, 2B, 3R).  Derrick Washington, Brandon Pizzino, Vinnie Romano and Adam Enloe each collected hits, for the Bears.  Defensively, Chase Whitehead continued to look strong, at 3B.


03/02/02: The Bears competed in the Brenham Tournament, this past weekend.   

New Caney 9 - Montgomery 0
For the first 5-innings, the Bears hung in there with New Caney, until they put up 5-runs, over the last 2-innings.  Adam Enloe (5P, 5H, 4R, 3ER, 7K, 5BB) started on the mound, with Ronnie Hessel (2P, 3H, 5R, 3ER, 3K, 5BB) finishing the game, in relief.  The Bears' bats went silent, as they were beaten by the bunch from New Caney.  Matt Yarotsky and Chase Whitehead picked up the only 2-hits, for the Bears.

Montgomery 9 - Belton 3
The Bears must have eaten their Wheaties, Friday morning.  Their bats came to life as they collected 13-hits, against Belton's pitchers.  Getting the start on the mound, Casey Springer (5P, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 8K, 2BB) had another good outing, while picking up the win.  Lefty, Trey Schurr (2P, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 2K, 2BB), came in to shut down Belton, in the final 2-innings.  Providing the spark, for the Bears, was Matt Yarotsky (2-hits, 3RBI) and Stephen Spaugh (2-hits, 2B, 2RBI).  Drew Tucker and Casey Springer each had 2-hits, as Derrick Washington, Adam Enloe, Brandon Pizzino, Shan Sullivan and Chase Whitehead added hits.

Jasper 9 - Montgomery 1
This game, too, was much closer than the final score indicates, as the Bears trailed just 4-1, with 2-outs in the 6th inning....then the proverbial wheels fell off.  On the mound Jesse Marshall (5-2/3IP, 7H, 6R, 3ER, 6BB, 7K) didn't seem to have his best stuff, but he managed to keep the Bears in the game, for the first 5-innings.  Trey Schurr (0IP, 1H, 3R, 0ER, 2BB, 0K) and Ronnie Hessel (1/3IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K) finished out the game, in relief.  Leading the Bears, with their bats, were Stephen Spaugh (2B, 1RBI), Drew Tucker (2B) , Derrick Washington, Matt Yarotsky, Chase Whitehead and Brandon Pizzino (2B), as they each collected hits. 

Matt Yarotsky (.500 batting average) continued his torrid hitting attach, while collecting 4-hits / 3RBI, for the tourney.  Stephen Spaugh (.333 batting average) pitched in 3-hits / 3RBI and Drew Tucker added 3-hits, while Derrick Washington (Fr.) showed more of the magic, with his glove in the outfield.  The Bears will travel to El Campo, to play in their tournament 03/07 to 03/09, which will be followed by a home game against Brazosport, on 03/11. 


02/23/02: The Bears competed in the Woodlands/Oak Ridge Tournament, this past weekend.  The Bears played Willis, Sam Rayburn (5A) and Woodlands (5A).

Willis 5 - Montgomery 4
The Bears lose this one, in the bottom of the 7th inning, after rallying back to take the lead, in the top of the inning.  Stephen Spaugh's 2-out double plated 2-runs, as the Bears finally regained the lead 4-3. Willis scored 2-unearned runs in the 7th, to take the victory.  The Bears hurt their own cause, with (5) errors, while allowing (4) unearned runs.  On the mound Jesse Marshall (6-2/3IP, 2H, 5R, 1ER, 2BB, 9K) pitched a great game.  The Bears bats were led by Matt Yarotsky, who collected 2-hits, while Brandon Pizzino, Stephen Spaugh (2-RBI) & Brandon Allen each collected hits.

Montgomery 6 - Sam Rayburn 6
The Bears picked up the victory, via the tie-breaker, which allowed them to advance in the Consolation bracket of the tournament. Casey Springer (5- 2/3IP, 5H, 6R, 4ER, 7K, 1BB, 3HBP) took the start for the Bears, with Trey Schurr (1/3IP, 1H, 0R, 0K, 0BB, 0ER) finishing in relief.  Adam Enloe (2B & HR - 3RBI), Shan Sullivan (1B & 2B) & Matt Yarotsky ( HR - 2RBI) led the Bears hitting attack.  Derrick Washington, Drew Tucker, Brandon Pizzino & Stephen Spaugh each collected hits, for the Bears.

Woodlands 7 - Montgomery 3
The Bears played a hard fought game, only to come up short, as The Woodlands took the victory.  Adam Enloe (5P, 8H, 7R, 5ER, 1K, 3BB) started on the mound, facing a very strong Woodlands bunch.  Trey Schurr (1IP, 1H, 0R, 0K, 0BB, 0ER) finished, again, in relief. Matt Yarotsky lead the Bears with 2-hits, while Drew Tucker, Stephen Spaugh, Shan Sullivan & Ricky Bockhorn each added hits.


02/15/02: The Bears beat New Caney 7-4, in the final scrimmage, at the Bar-B-Que Fund Raiser.  The Bears battled against New Caney's mound aces, Billy Carnline and Greg O'Neill.  Five Bear pitchers combined for (17) K's, against the Eagles .

Jesse Marshall (3IP, 1H, 0R, 6K, 3BB, 0ER) had another good start, with Casey Springer (2IP, 1H, 0R, 4K, 1BB, 0ER) throwing two outstanding innings, in his first mound appearance of the spring, due to a hip strain. Adam Enloe (2IP, 1H, 1R, 4K, 0BB, 1ER) followed with two strong innings, while Trey Schurr (1IP, 1H, 1R, 1K, 1BB, 1ER) and Ricky Bockhorn (2IP, 3H, 2R, 4K, 0BB, 2ER) finished the game. 

Brandon Pizzino returned from a broken thumb, to lead the Bears with 2-hits, 1BB and a sac-bunt. Stephen Spaugh added 2-hits, as did Ricky Bockhorn.  Other players picking up hits were Matt Yarotsky, Rory Dean, Shawn Webb, and Brandon Allen.  The Bears committed just 2-errors, in the 10-inning game. 


02/12/02: The Bears lost 11-8, in a 10-inning scrimmage against Bryan HS .  The name of the game was "errors".  There were 9 unearned runs allowed by the Bears.  Jesse Marshall (2-2/3IP, 2H, 3R, 4K, 2BB, 0ER) started the game, with Adam Enloe (1-1/3IP,  3H, 4R, 1K, 1BB, 1ER) following in relief. Trey Schurr (3IP, 3H, 3R, 0K, 1BB, 0ER) and Ricky Bockhorn (3IP, 4H, 1R, 2K, 2BB, 1ER) finished the game, impressively.  Vinnie Romano led the Bears with 2-hits, while Stephen Spaugh and Drew Tucker hit doubles. Adam Enloe, Shawn Webb and Ronnie Hessel each collected a hit.


02/08/02: The Bears played in their first scrimmage of the season, at Katy Taylor HS.  The Bears beat the KT Mustangs 4-1, in a 10 inning affair.  The Bears pitching was superb, as the four pitchers held the Katy Taylor batters to (4) hits. 

Jesse Marshall (3IP, 1H, 0R, 3K, 0BB, 1HBP, 0ER) started going 3 scoreless innings.  Adam Enloe (3IP, 2H, 1R, 1K, 0BB, 2HBP, 1ER) followed with three good innings, while Trey Schurr (2IP, 1H, 0R, 1K, 0BB, 0ER) and Ricky Bockhorn (2IP, 0H, 0R, 2K, 1BB, 0ER) finished the game, impressively.

Defensively the Bears committed just one error, during the opening at-bat of the game.  Matt Yarotsky was the hitting star of the evening, hitting a 2-run bomb that left the field over the 355ft sign, in the left field gap.  Others, hitting the ball on the nose, were Drew Tucker, Vinnie Romano, Stephen Spaugh and Ricky Bockhorn.
