05/15/03: The #6 (4A) State ranked Montgomery Bears fell to Pflugerville Connally, in the Region III Quarterfinals, 4-1. The Bears return home, to host P-Ville Connally, at Bear Field, Friday at 7:30pm. Please, let's pack the house, Friday night! The kids need your support. The crowds were fantastic, during the Oak Ridge series. If you weren't there, you missed some record breaking baseball.
Dustin McCandless scored the Bears lone run Thursday night as he came home on a double by Drew Tucker. McCandless had doubled earlier in the inning.

5/11/03: Montgomery wins the Area Title! The Stats have been updated!
The #7 4A
State ranked Montgomery Bears took the area title, by
winning the decisive 3rd game of the series, 8-3, over the
19-4A Champions, Oak Right War Eagles.
The War
Eagles forced a 3rd game, after taking a 17-15 twelve inning
victory, in what turned out to be a slugfest. There were
56-hits (Mont-32, OR-24), in a game where the lead changed
ten times. Oak Ridge was led by Ricky Thomas and Mike
Lawson, who each homered twice. Thomas had a walk-off 3-run
dinger, in the bottom of the 12th inning.
The Bears
racked up some impressive offensive numbers, for the
doubleheader. Montgomery scored 23-runs, on 44-hits, in the
19-innings that were played, Saturday. More impressive is
that this was done in 90+ degree temperature, with a heat
index of 120-degrees.

battled the War Eagles, in Game 2. Trey went 6-innings, in
the opener, as
James Schroeder
(3-1) picked up the loss, pitching 6-innings, in relief.
In Game 3,
Michael
Heard
took the mound, after enduring the 12-innings of heat, in
Game 2's marathon. Heard (4-0) picked up the win, as he
went 5-2/3 innings, while allowing just two runs.
Dustin
McCandless,
a hard throwing soph LHP, snagged the save, as he closed out
the final 1-1/3 innings. McCandless helped his cause, by
ripping a 3-run homerun, in the top of the 7th inning.
Montgomery
(25-5) will now face 17-4A Champions, Pflugerville Connally,
in the 4A Region-III quarterfinals.

Heights 2 (8-innings)
The Montgomery
Bears edged the
Harker Heights
Knights,
3-2, in an extra inning affair. The win gives the Bears
a sweep, of the first round series. The 7th state-ranked
Bears (23-4) advance to player Oak Ridge, in the 2nd round of
the playoffs. The Bears picked up their 23rd victory, of
the season, which sets a new school record.
Trey Schurr
(8-2) started on the mound for the Bears, as he went 5-2/3
innings, allowing just one run, on 4-hits. Soph RHP,
James Schroeder
(3-0)
picked up the win, in relief, as he went 2-2/3 innings,
allowing 2-hits and one unearned run.
Freshman,
Michael
Heard had
a clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single, to give the Bears a 2-0 lead, in
the 5th inning.
Shan Sullivan
drove in
the go-ahead run, in the 8th inning, with another 2-out
single.
Drew Tucker,
Dustin
McCandless
(soph) and
Cory Spaugh
(soph) added hits for the Bears. Big hits by the soph's
and the freshman, along with a soph getting the win. The
young underclassmen stepped it up a notch, today.
There was a
freak injury, to a Harker Heights player, during a run-down,
in the bottom of the 8th inning. He was taken off the field,
on a stretcher and left by an ambulance. Our prayers are with
him and his family.
Shan Sullivan
drove in the game-winning and series-clinching run,
with a
single to right field in the 8th inning Saturday.

05/02/03: Montgomery 6 - Harker Heights 2 Bears Win! Bears Win! The Montgomery Bears took the opening game, of the first round playoff series, against Harker Heights, by a score of 6-2.
Casey Springer (9-1) pitched a 3-hit complete game, for the victory. Casey allowed just one earned run, while the Bears played strong defensively, in the field.
Brandon Allen had the big hit, as he launched a 3-run bomb, to give the Bears a comfortable 5-1 lead, in the 5th inning. Allen hit a curve ball, which was about 6" off the ground, over the right field wall, about 400ft. The ball landed 70ft past the outfield fence, into the softball complex. Allen, also, had an RBI double, for a total of 4-RBI.
Matt Bess had a clutch 2-out RBI single, to close out the scoring for the Bears. Michael Heard had a double, while Dustin McCandless and JJ Jensen picked up clutch hits, along the way.
The Bears raised
their season record to (22-4), with game #2, to be played at
Harker Heights, Saturday, at 1:00pm. The game will be broadcast

04/27/03: The Montgomery Bears (18-4A, 2nd) will face Harker Heights (17-4A, 3rd), in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Montgomery Bears first baseman Matt Yarotsky has three homers and 21 RBIs this season. 4/25/03: Montgomery finishes 2nd, in District 18-4A Brenham takes the District 18-4A Championship, with a 3-0 victory, over the Montgomery Bears. It was a good high school game, with clutch plays and tough pitching. Blake Brannon (UTSA-signee) picked up the win, for the Brenham Cubs. Blake pitched the complete game shutout, as the Bears couldn't find the holes, in the Cubs defense.
Trey Schurr picked
up the loss, for the Bears, as he allowed 7-hits and 3-runs. Trey
has just committed to UT-Dallas, for next year. Picking up
hit, for the Bears, were
Brandon Allen, Matt Yarotsky, Drew
Tucker, Dustin McCandless and Cory Spaugh.
Brandon Allen
had a .558 batting average, during District 18-4A play, while
hitting a strong .425, for the season. Brandon had 10-RBI,
during the district season. His numbers should get him some
MVP votes.
The Cubs (23-2,
9-1) will have a bye, as the Bears (21-4, 8-2) will face Harker
Heights, in the first round of the playoffs.

4/21/03: Montgomery 5 - Waller 2
The
Montgomery Bears held on to a share of the
district lead, after defeating Waller,
5-2, at Bear Field. Casey Springer (8-1) was tough, on the mound,
picking up the win, while allowing just 4-hits, 1-earned run and
12-K's.
Matt Yarotsky had
the big hit, tonight, driving a shot over the right fielder's head,
for a 2-RBI triple. Michael Heard had two hits, while Brandon
Allen, Dustin McCandless and Jared Jensen added hits, for the
Bears.
The Bears stayed
atop District 18-4A, tied with Brenham, as the Cubs defeated
Terry, 10-1. Montgomery raised their season record to (21-3,
8-1). The big showdown will be Friday night, 7pm, at
Fireman's
Park, as the Bears square off with The Brenham Cubs, in a game
that will decide the district champion.
4/21/03: Montgomery's Trey Schurr, became the third Bears senior, to commit to play college ball, next year. Trey visited University of Texas @ Dallas and committed to attend and pitch at the next level. Congrat's Trey! Mr or Mrs Schurr.....email me a picture of Trey, for the site.

Montgomery 1 - Terry 4 4/15/03: Montgomery 10 - Lamar Consolidated 0 (4-1/2 innings) The Montgomery Bears steam rolled Lamar Consolidated, in a 10-0, run-rule District 18-4A contest. Casey Springer (7-1) was outstanding, on the mound for the Bears, as he limited LC to one single, while striking out (7) and allowing no walks.
Brandon Allen led the Bears with three hits, while Matt Bess and Dustin McCandless chipped in, with two hits each. The Bears hammered (13) hits, in their four innings that they batted. The #5 state ranked Bears extended their winning streak to (19) games, while raising their season record to (20-2, 7-0).
Junior second baseman Drew Tucker is a standout defensive player and leads off for the Bears.
4/10/03:
Montgomery 9 - Foster 7
THSBCA State 4A Polls (4/07/03) 4/10/03: Montgomery's Matt Bess, formally committed to attend Eastfield College (Dallas), next year. Eastfield's assistant coach, Tim Meadows, was at the Bear Field, Tuesday night, to seal the deal. Matt has worked hard, this season. His play, at 3B, has been sparkling and his bat has been hot, lately. Matt is 2nd, on the team, with a .467 OB%.
Bess is the second senior, to commit to play college baseball, next year. Casey Springer committed and signed, in mid-November, to the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Casey was recruited by numerous schools, during the fall of 2002. He will bring his blazing fastball to Huntsville, next year, to join up with ex-Bear, Jesse Marshall.
4/08/03: Montgomery 6 - Brenham 5 This game was all it was billed, for the two state ranked 4A teams! The Bears score two runs, in the bottom of the 15th inning, to take the marathon 18-4A victory. 10th ranked Montgomery took a 4-0 lead, over 3rd ranked Brenham, by scoring four runs, in the bottom of the 6th inning. Brenham, working some of their Cub magic, roared back with four runs, in the top of the 7th, to send the game in extra innings. Casey Springer and Majewski (sp?) squared off, in a scoreless duel, for the first six innings. After the Bears and the Cubs scored their four runs, Brenham's Bradley Kohring and Montgomery's Michael Heard threw goose eggs, from the 8th inning, to the 15th inning. Brenham scored in the top of the 15th, on a suicide squeeze. Looking down, but not out, the Bears managed to score two unearned runs, in the bottom of the 15th, to take the victory. Michael Heard picked up the victory, while Kohring was the hard luck loser, as he pitched 8-innings, without allowing an earned run. The Bears extended their winning streak to (17) games, while raising their season record to (18-2, 5-0). The Bears ended the first half of district play, with a perfect record.
Shan Sullivan, who had a clutch two-RBI hit in the sixth inning, tracks down a ball behind second base during the battle against Brenham 4/04/03: Montgomery 4 - Waller 2: Montgomery picks up a road victory, in District 18-4A, by easing by Waller, 4-2. Trey Schurr (7-0) picked up the win, while Casey Springer (6-1) pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, for the save. Springer worked out of a bases loaded jam, in the bottom of the 7th inning, by striking out the final two batters. Brandon Allen led the Bears with 2-2B's and 1-RBI. Derek Washington added a hit and an RBI. Matt Bess, Cory Spaugh, Dustin McCandless and Michael Heard each had hits, for the Bears.
The Bears extend their
winning streak to (16) games, while they raise their season record to
(17-2, 4-0).

Michael Heard, who threw a runner out at the plate from right field in the 3rd inning, picked up the save against Lamar, pitching the bottom of the7th inning and allowing no hits, while striking out two. 03/28/03: The Montgomery Bears (#10 ranked by THSBCA 4A Poll) defeat Lamar Consolidated, 6-3, in a District 18-4A road game. Casey Springer (5-1) picks up the win, in relief, as Michael Heard strikes out two, in the 7th inning, to end the game and pick up the save.
Collecting hits for the Bears were Matt Yarotsky (1-RBI), Brandon Allen, Shan Sullivan, Matt Bess (2B, 1-RBI), Cory Spaugh, Dustin McCandless and Derek Washington (1-RBI). JJ Jensen fueled the rally with a stolen base and a run.
The Bears extend their winning streak to (14) games, while raising their season record to (15-2, 2-0). 03/25/03: The Bears pulled some more late inning heroics, as they scored two runs, in the bottom of the 7th inning, to win their district opener, 4-3, against Foster HS. Matt Yarotsky hit a towering double, with two outs, to chase home Michael Heard, with the tying run. After Brandon Allen was walked, intentionally, Shan Sullivan sent the crowd home happy, with a single to right field. Trey Schurr (6-0) picked up the win, in relief.
The Bears extended their winning streak to (13) games, as they raised their record to (14-2, 1-0), for the season. The Bears are now ranked #10, in the state, by the latest THSBCA 4A Poll. 03/25/03: In Tuesday's Chronicle, Michael Heard is ranked #8, with (45) strikeouts, in the 4A area rankings. Trey Schurr is ranked #2, with an ERA of 0.44, while the Bears team ERA is 2nd, in the area.

Freshman LHP, Michael Heard
picked up the victory, on the mound, while striking out 17 batters, in
6-2/3 innings. At one point, Heard K'd 13 batters, in a row, as he allowed
just one flair single and one walk. Sophomore RHP,
James Schroeder came in
to get the final out and pick up his 2nd save.
Matt Bess slides home for a run in the bottom of the 4th inning, on a sacrifice fly by Dustin McCandless. 03/21/03: The Bears defeated Oak Ridge, 4-3, at home. After falling behind, 3-0, in the top of the 1st, the Bears battled back, to take the win, in the bottom of the 7th inning. Brandon Allen hits a two-out rocket, over the right fielder's head, to drive in the winning run, in the bottom of the 7th inning. Trey Schurr (5-0) picks up the complete game victory. Cory Spaugh and Shan Sullivan each collected 2-hits, for the Bears. 03/19/03: The Bears hold on, to defeat Willis, 2-1. home, Wednesday evening. Casey Springer picks up the win, as Trey Schurr goes the last 1-2/3 innings, for the save. Sam Shiflet pitched well, in middle relief. The Bears extend their winning streak to 10-games, while raising their season record to (11-2). Friday, the Bears host Oak Ridge, while Saturday, they host Caney Creek.

Trey Schurr picks up the victory, in the 1st game, going the distance and raising his season record to (4-0). Michael Heard gets the "W", in the 2nd game, with James Schroeder, picking up the save. Casey Springer picked up the victory, while raising his record to (3-1). Michael Heard had 2-hits and Cory Spaugh added a clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single. The Bears extended their winning streak to eight games, as their season record is now (8-2).
03/11/03: Check out the Courier article, concerning Coach Clint Heard. It's a nice article, which is very deserving. I'm not sure everyone understands how lucky we are, to have a quality individual, at the baseball helm. Coach Heard puts 150% in to our young men...and it shows.
03/08/03: The Bears take the championship game, of the annual El Campo Tournament by defeating the host team, El Campo, 12-5, in an 8-inning affair.
James Schroeder pitches the final 2-2/3 innings, in relief of Michael Heard, to pick up his 2nd victory, of the season. Brandon Allen leads the Bears, offensively, with (3B,HR,4RBI), while Matt Yarotsky chimes in with (3H,1RBI). The Bears win their 6th game in a row, to go to (7-2), for the season.
Brandon Allen went (6 for 12), for the tourney, with (3HR,3B,6RBI). Matt Yarotsky picked up 5-hits and 5-RBI, as he, too had a big weekend. James Schroeder picks up a win and a save, in his two relief stints.
Brandon Allen hit a two-run home run against El Campo 03/07/03: The Bears knocked off Bush HS (5A), 8-6, in the 2nd round of the annual El Campo Tournament. Trey Schurr was the winning pitcher, for the Bears, with James Schroeder picking up the save. Matt Yarotsky had another homerun, as Brandon Allen put two over the fence. The Bears (4A) raised their season record to (6-2), which includes two victories against 5A classification teams. 03/06/03: The Bears get revenge from last year's loss, by defeating Channelview, 6-2, in the opening round of the El Campo Tournament. Casey Springer picks up the victory, by pitching a complete game. Brandon Allen gets two hits, while Corey Spaugh picks up 2-RBI, with a clutch 2-out single. 03/05/03: The link, below, contains an article on the Houston 5A Baseball Web Site. The article comments on the new Bears Field. 03/01/03: The Bears defeated Alvin, 6-1, to go (3-0), in the rain-shortened Brenham Tournament. Trey Schurr moved to (2-0), for the season, as he picked up the complet-game victory, while allowing no earned runs. Michael Heard (3-hits), Matt Yarotsky (2-hits) and Brandon Allen (2-hits) led the Bears offensively. 02/28/03: The Bears took two victories, in the opening day of the Brenham Tournament. They defeated El Campo, 6-2, in the opening game. The Bears followed that with a 10-0 victory, over the LCM Bears. James Schroeder and Casey Springer were the winning pitchers, Friday. The start, for Schroeder, was his first, at the varsity level. Matt Yarotsky stroked another homerun, while Corey Spaugh picked up four hits, for the day. 02/24/03: The Bears lost to Belleville, 4-3, in a cold, windy road game. Sam Shiflet picked up the loss, in relief, as Mike Heard pitched the first 5-innings, allowing just 3-hits, while putting down (11) Bellville batters, by way of the "K". 02/23/03: The Bears played a doubleheader, Saturday, losing to Woodlands, 9-3, while defeating New Caney, 9-3, in the 2nd game.
Casey Springer took the loss, against Woodlands, while Trey Schurr picked up the "W", in the New Caney game. Mike Heard finished the 2nd game, in relief, as did James Schroeder, in the 1st game. Dustin McCandless, Shan Sullivan and Matt Yarotsky had multiple hits, in the Woodlands game, while Brandon Allen and Yarotsky added homeruns, in the New Caney contest.

2/15/03: The Bears routed New Caney, 20-4, in the annual Bears Baseball Bar-B-Que Fundraiser. Matt Yarotsky and Kyle Peterson hit dingers, for the Bears, while Peterson, Matt Bess, Michael Heard and Yarotsky had multiple hits. Casey Springer, Trey Schurr and Heard held the Eagles to one un-earned run, over 9-innings. 02/11/03: The Bears traveled to Bryan HS, to scrimmage Tuesday afternoon. The game went 13-innings, with the final score, 6-5, in favor of Bryan. Casey Springer, Trey Schurr, Michael Heard, Sam Shiflet and James Schroeder, all had good outings, on the mound, as the Bears only allowed 5-earned runs.
Michael Heard led the way with 2-hits, while Shan Sullivan, James Schroeder, JJ Jensen, Matt Yarotsky, Brandon Allen, Corey Spaugh and Mike Gutierrez added hits. 02/03/03: The Bears scrimmaged for eight innings, in Navasota, Monday afternoon. They scored five runs, while four Bears pitchers combined to limit the Rattlers to just 3-hits and 1-unearned run. Casey Springer pitched two hitless innings, as did Michael Heard. Trey Schurr added two innings, while allowing just one hit. Closing the game was Sam Shiflet, who allowed two hits and the lone unearned run.

05/10/02: The season ended, for the Bears, as they lost to Jasper, 10-5, in the 2nd round of the State Playoffs. Conroe Courier Story 05/08/02: The Bears fall to Jasper HS 7-1, in the 1st game of the series. Jesse Marshall takes the loss, while picking up 11-K's and allowing just one earned run. The Bears committed four errors and had their bats silenced by Jasper's Keaton Yeates, as he held the Bears to four hits. Conroe Courier Story 05/04/02: The Bears came back, to take the 3-game series, from Marble Falls, as they defeated them twice, on Saturday, at Bear Field. The scores were 4-3 and 2-0, as the Bears showed a lot of heart, by battling from the brink of elimination. Conroe Courier Story 05/02/02: The Bears dropped the opening game of the playoffs, to Marble Falls, 9-1. 04/26/02: The Bears lost a heartbreaker, to Brenham, 4-3, at Bear Field. The Bears end the regular season, by finishing in 2nd place. Courier sports story 04/22/02: The Bears hammered Magnolia, 10-1, as they clinched no worse than 2nd place, in District 18-4A. The Bears pound out (14) hits, along with a complete game victory, by Casey Springer. The Bears raised their record to (17-7, 7-2). Courier sports story 04/19/02: The Bears clinched a playoff spot, by hammering Waller, 9-0. The Bears pounded out (17) hits, while Jesse Marshall limited Waller, to two singles, in the complete game shutout. Courier Sports Story 04/16/02: The Bears defeated Navasota, 10-0, at Bear Field, in 5-innings. Home runs were the word of the night, as the Bears hit five long balls. Matt Yarotsky and Adam Enloe hit two dingers, each, while Drew Tucker added a game ending "walk-off" homer. Casey Springer pitches a 5-inning no-hitter, while striking out 13 batters. Courier Sports Story 04/12/02: The Bears beat Huntsville, 3-2, in a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Jesse Marshall gets the victory, on the mound, collecting 12-K's, which raises his season total to 82. Adam Enloe provides a clutch 2-run single, to push the Bears over the top. Drew Tucker continues his strong play, in the field and with the bat. 04/09/02: The Bears lost to Brenham, 3-2, in a exciting game. 04/05/02: The Bears pull off a thrilling victory, 2-1, against Magnolia, by scoring a run in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Bears raise their record to (13-6, 3-1), while holding on to a share of 1st place, in district. Matt Yarotsky continues his season long 19-game hitting streak, by picking up two more hits. Courier sports story 04/02/02: The Bears blanked Waller, 7-0, at Bear Field.

Houston area rankings. Casey Springer throws an absolute gem of a
game. Matt Yarotsky extends his 18-game hitting streak, with a 3-run
bomb. 03/28/02: The Bears
beat Navasota, 3-2, for a "road"

03/26/02: The Bears
lost to Huntsville 5-4, in
8-innings. 03/22/02: The Bears blanked Barbers Hill, 7-0, as they extended their winning streak to (7) games. The Bears defeated previously unbeaten pitcher, James Northcut, who had brought a (4-0) record, into this game. Matt Yarotsky extends his hitting streak to 15-games! 03/19/02: The Bears hammer Jasper, 17-6, in a 6-inning run rule. Jasper is currently ranked 4th, in the Houston Area, by the Houston Chronicle and they are ranked 8th, in the State, by the THSBCA. 03/15/02: 1st Game: Montgomery 9 - Cleveland 0; 2nd Game: Montgomery 15 - Cleveland 0. The Bears have won 5 in a row, while extending their record to (8-5). 03/15/02: The Bears defeated Wheatly 16-0, at home, Thursday night. Trey Schurr pitched a complete game 1-hit shutout, to pick up his 2nd victory, of the season. 03/09/02: The Bears won the Consolation Championship, at the El Campo Tournament, this weekend.
