Kathy Follensbee and Ashley Sherman, Directors

Kathy Follensbee received her B.S. in Physical Education from Florida State University.  She is a past President of Florida Dance Masters (FDM), and past Secretary of the Florida Dance Education Organization (FDEO).  As the Dance Director of the Dr. Phillips High School Visual and Performing Arts Magnet program, her students won many honors and are now dancing in colleges and performing across the nation.  Kathy has been named "Whos Who in America's Teachers" six times (only 1% of teachers are awarded this honor more than once).  Kathy has an eclectic background in movement! She was a Synchronized Swimmer and Dancer for the Louisiana World's Fair Exposition in 1984, and is a Master's National Champion as well. She has judged dance contests and taught master classes throughout Florida and New York.  Kathy has been married for 20 years and has three children and a dog (who all love to dance)!!!

Ashley Sherman is an alumnae of DPHS Dance Magnet program! She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Florida State University (FSU) with a BFA in Dance and BS in Exercise Science.  While studying Ballet, Modern techniques and extensive classroom courses, she was able to perform and choreograph in the Dance Department's concerts.   She was awarded two summer scholarships to attend Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York and attended the Graham-based Frostburg Summer Dance Retreat at Frostburg State University as well.  Ms. Sherman has also worked with the Orlando-based modern company, Voci.

Ms. Sherman has continued to demonstrate her leadership abilities that began with the Dr. Phillips Dance Magnet Program.  She served as the treasurer for the FSU Dance Student Advisory Council and as the Visual Arts and Dance senator for the Student Government.  The Dance Department was allocated over $15,000 for travel, exercise machines, and department equipment because of her involvement and commitment to these organizations.  Ms. Sherman is also a member of Florida Dance Masters, National (and Florida) Dance Educator’s Organization, Who's Who in America's College's and Universities, Golden Key National Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Seminole Torchbearers, and American College of Sports Medicine (certified personal trainer).  She now serves on the board for Florida Dance Education Organization.  Ashley had the pleasure of serving on Orange County Public School’s writing team the past two summers and began solidifying curriculum work, assessment tools, and vocabulary for dance.  In May 2007, she earned her Master’s Degree in Higher Education.  While at the University of Central Florida, she created a Professional Development Project and participated in her Internship through Valencia Community College’s Dance Pre-Major (both under the direction of Dr. Suzanne Salapa).

Lesley Brasseux is our Valencia Dual Enrollment teacher.  Ms. Brasseux began her training at the School of Southern Ballet in Atlanta, Georgia.  She has attended the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Ballet in New York City and the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina.  Ms.Brasseux holds a Masters Degree in Dance from Lousiana State University and has served on the faculty of a variety of colleges, universities and professional dance schools.  Since 1980, Ms. Brasseux has choreographed works for Valencia Community College, Southern Ballet Theatre, The University of Central Florida, and received a Scholarship for Young Choreographers from the National Association for outstanding Individual Achievement in Arts. Ms. Brasseux is currently a member of the dance faculty at Valencia Community College, Rollins College and Dr. Phillips High School. She was recently chosen as an Associate for the residency of Merce Cunningham at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. She teaches the advanced class two days a week at Dr. Phillips.
