Lyme Alert !!!!
Remember that Fall & Spring are periods of high
activity for the lousy ticks that are EVERYWHERE!!!! They must have a blood meal in order to continue their life cycle, what
that means to you and me is that we and all of our faithful companions (horses, dogs, cats) are all vulnerable. Pay attention
to check for ticks & tick spit (resembles pine tar). The ticks especially like to climb up the horse's tails & tend
to attach at the bottom of the tail bone. The ticks also love the horses lower jaw which spends most of its time in the grass,
the tick's natural habitat. With the cats & dogs you can find ticks on them anywhere, and if they sleep in your bed you
need to check yourself every day!
What can you do to protect yourself & your companions? There
is an ultrasonic device in the Schneider's catalog that sells for about $13 and works for 3 months, I've tried it. You need
one for a dog or cat, and 2 for a horse, one braided into the mane & one in the tail. It's effective and less dangerous
than any of the chemicals that are marketed.
If your animal's behavior changes after you've removed ticks don't
wait- get the vet immediately. Tell the vet specifically about the ticks. Some vets are more Lyme literate than others, just
as some human health professionals are more Lyme literate than others. There is a TON of information on the internet, take
some time to do some reading to protect your health & that of your loved ones!!!! This is truly an epidemic!!!!

In memory of a very special friend
Anyone who had the opportunity to know him loved him. Lexington taught so much
to so many riders, he will never be forgotton. He didn't suffer long, which was a blessing. He passed on October 21. My heartfelt
pain goes out to his loving human custodians, Gwen & Rachel. Thank God we know there are horses in heaven!

My understanding of the First Ammendment of the Constitution of the
United States states that as a citizen I have a right to free speech. A "blog" is an online journal, making me a journalist,
presumably. The question of who is a journalist has confounded the public & press for a long time. The U. S. Supreme Court
recognized this difficulty in its 1972 decision "Branzburg v.Hayes"." The administration of a constitutional newsman's privilege
would present practical & conceptual difficulties of a high order," wrote Justice Byron White. "Sooner or later, it would
be necessary to define those categories of newsmen who qualified for the privilege, a questionable procedure in light of the
traditional doctrine that liberty of the press is the right of the lonely pamphleteer who uses carbon paper.......just as
much as of the large metropolitan publisher. Justice White added: "Freedom of the press is a "fundamental personal right"
which is not confined to newspapers & periodicals. It necessarily embraces pamphlets, leaflets, ........The press in its
historic connotation comprehends every sort of publication which affords a vehicle of information & opinion."
