Why are some people so unpleasant?????????
I've lived all over the United
States, people in some areas are wonderful, like Minnesotans, while others are just rude and unpleasant, like some people
from Pennsylvania & Baltimore.............actually, now that I think about it not everyone I know from Minnesota
was wonderful. Birds of a feather flock together...........

SPRING, DAY ONE, 2009 (3/21/09)
What a beautiful
Spring day in Maryland! It was such fun to see so many of my students today! Congratulations to Gwen on her new horse, Medallion,
aka "Leo". I know she will have years of pleasure with him. And it was great to see some of my young students again! At the
same time I am sad to say "farewell" to my friend, Chrissie, who is leaving for England to care for her Mother. Chrissie's
horse will remain at Allemont until Chrissie's return. Also, Lynn's beautiful young horse has returned from the racetrack
with epm. He's being treated and we are all praying for a full recovery (although I'd rather not see him return to the track........)

Farewell to my best friend.................
It's hard to believe Shiner's gone...........she passed
on January 2. It was very difficult to say goodbye to my girlie, she has been my constant companion for the past
fourteen years, writing this brings a tear to my eyes. She was faithful and loved me unconditionally until the very end. I
pray that she is hunting in heaven!

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM=INVESTMENT OF TIME & MONEY
Have you ever questioned how a person becomes publicized in spite
of the fact that the person may be dishonest, cruel, deceitful, abusive, etc.? It's simple- invest time & money in that
person and before you know it you'll see this individual's name & picture in print and touted by the organization that's
received the support. It's a money thing, seriously.

Potomac Horse Fever??????
Day 6 since my horse started his 104 degree fever. Today another
horse at our farm in Charles Town spiked a 105 degree fever. Obviously the vet was called, a different vet from the same practice
came out to examine our new "patient." After her examination she stated that she thought it was possible that we are dealing
with Potomac Horse Fever. Not hard to believe since we are living in the Shenandoah River valley, which is a tributary of
the Potomac River. Of course I'm confused why the vet that examined my horse, Dave" , last week didn't have any clear explanation
for what was happening. Dave's treatment was simply doxycyclene, today's patient, Posi, received IV electrolytes with amoxycillin,
and starting doxy tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if Positron's illness follows the same path as Dave's. Dave spiked
a high fever again the second day. So far I think we've been very blessed with no complications...................

My horse has 104 degree fever!
No sooner did I post the tick warning & my horse, Dave, turned
up with a 104 degree fever!!! I had the vet out, she drew blood for a lyme titer & we started him on doxycyclene. His
high fever is NOT generally associated with Lyme specifically, but I know personally tick bourne diseases (yes, plural!) can
present differently in every animal or person. It is decidedly NOT a black & white type of disease. It is possible to
get false negative results repeatedly.I talked to my farrier this morning & she told me she knows of a few other horses
in our area that spiked the high fevers. They were told their horses had "tick fever". Hmmmmmmmmm. Anyway, read my earlier
lyme post, it's very important.

Lyme Alert !!!!
Remember that Fall & Spring are periods of high
activity for the lousy ticks that are EVERYWHERE!!!! They must have a blood meal in order to continue their life cycle, what
that means to you and me is that we and all of our faithful companions (horses, dogs, cats) are all vulnerable. Pay attention
to check for ticks & tick spit (resembles pine tar). The ticks especially like to climb up the horse's tails & tend
to attach at the bottom of the tail bone. The ticks also love the horses lower jaw which spends most of its time in the grass,
the tick's natural habitat. With the cats & dogs you can find ticks on them anywhere, and if they sleep in your bed you
need to check yourself every day!
What can you do to protect yourself & your companions? There
is an ultrasonic device in the Schneider's catalog that sells for about $13 and works for 3 months, I've tried it. You need
one for a dog or cat, and 2 for a horse, one braided into the mane & one in the tail. It's effective and less dangerous
than any of the chemicals that are marketed.
If your animal's behavior changes after you've removed ticks don't
wait- get the vet immediately. Tell the vet specifically about the ticks. Some vets are more Lyme literate than others, just
as some human health professionals are more Lyme literate than others. There is a TON of information on the internet, take
some time to do some reading to protect your health & that of your loved ones!!!! This is truly an epidemic!!!!

In memory of a very special friend
Anyone who had the opportunity to know him loved him. Lexington taught so much
to so many riders, he will never be forgotton. He didn't suffer long, which was a blessing. He passed on October 21. My heartfelt
pain goes out to his loving human custodians, Gwen & Rachel. Thank God we know there are horses in heaven!

To blog or not to blog.......................
My understanding of the First Ammendment of the Constitution of the
United States states that as a citizen I have a right to free speech. A "blog" is an online journal, making me a journalist,
presumably. The question of who is a journalist has confounded the public & press for a long time. The U. S. Supreme Court
recognized this difficulty in its 1972 decision "Branzburg v.Hayes"." The administration of a constitutional newsman's privilege
would present practical & conceptual difficulties of a high order," wrote Justice Byron White. "Sooner or later, it would
be necessary to define those categories of newsmen who qualified for the privilege, a questionable procedure in light of the
traditional doctrine that liberty of the press is the right of the lonely pamphleteer who uses carbon paper.......just as
much as of the large metropolitan publisher. Justice White added: "Freedom of the press is a "fundamental personal right"
which is not confined to newspapers & periodicals. It necessarily embraces pamphlets, leaflets, ........The press in its
historic connotation comprehends every sort of publication which affords a vehicle of information & opinion."

Dressage competition for junior riders...........
This past Sunday I attended a dressage schooling show with a 14
year old student. She is an excellent rider & rides an appropriate horse, they are a good match. Unfortunately, she competed
against adults, professionals, and local dressage "big-wigs". The judging, as usual , seemed to reflect personal biases over
actual presentation by the competitors. In my studen'ts class there was a horse that was curled so far behind the vertical
it almost made me cry to watch, surprise, this was the winner of the class!!!! There was also a horse that was never round
who was pinned ahead of the young rider.
Here's my question:
Why can't juniors be pinned seperately at schooling shows?
If we truly want to grow our sport we need to encourage our juniors by offering
them equitable, inclusive competition, rather than segregating them into a couple "junior rider" shows a year??????
