Sitton Spelling Sourcebook Series
 Egger Publishing, Inc.

King's West School is implementing Rebecca Sitton's spelling program. This approach to spelling emphasizes high frequency words, phonics and teaching predictable spelling patterns to make children excellent observers of words. There are 1200 words in this program. Second grade is responsible for words 35 through 170
this year which are listed below.

King's West is working with the Rebecca Sitton Spelling Program.  It emphasizes correct spelling in everyday writing, not just for the end-of-the-week test.

The "Priority List" of "no excuse" spelling words will be studied throughout the year and the words are revisited constantly to ensure they are a part of each child's long term memory.  2nd Graders will have 10 - 15 words each week on their "words to learn list". These are the most frequently used words in the English language, as well as topical words that will correlate with our social studies and sicence curriculum.

FAQ - When will my child be assessed on their "Words to Learn List"?

We will be assessing students by using cloze word tests, dictation, take-home homework papers and frequent spelling checks using their daily writing projects in journals and other subject areas. I will send home the assessments regularly, as well as communicate spelling grades on report cards and progress reports. There will not be a Friday test to study for, but rather, studying and learning is a continual process.

You can help your child by frequently checking with them at home, quizzing them, practicing the words, proofreading, looking over homework together and focusing in on troublesome words. For example, many second graders spell "they" t-h-a-y, because of the way it sounds. If your child has difficulty with this word, ask them to spell this while you're in the car together, and check on it often in their writing.
