J.P. Donleavy from the play The Saddest Summer of Samuel S |

Other editions of published Donleavy plays exist and are being sought to add to this bibliography, among them The Saddest Summer of Samuel S published in 1972, publisher information not known at this time.
Later Penguin printings of Donleavy titles (circa '80s) list a Penguin edition titled The Plays of J.P. Donleavy, containing six plays: The Ginger Man, A Singular Man, The Saddest Summer of Samuel S & Fairy Tales of New York (as in the earlier Penguin edition titled J. P. Donleavy - The Plays), plus The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B and a play I have yet to find any information on called The Venereal in the Vernacular. At this point it appears doubtful that this Penguin edition was actually published and distributed, but I am still searching nonetheless.
For more on Donleavy's plays, including a list of performances with production credits, visit the page J.P. Donleavy - Playwright. |

What They Did in Dublin (with) The Ginger Man - a play |
|
|
|
Cloth | MacGibbon & Kee Ltd, London, 1961 - 156 pages
First UK edition of the play adaptation of The Ginger Man. Because of the typesetting on the cover of this edition, it's often incorrectly listed by booksellers as a play titled "What They Did in Dublin with The Ginger Man." It is actually the play version of The Ginger Man with an introduction by Donleavy describing the events leading to the forced closing of the first Dublin production, titled "What They did in Dublin."

Wraps | Penguin, Middlesex, England, 1961 - 94 pages
First UK edition. The bookseller I purchased this copy from listed that this edition was published before the US edition, making it the true first. I have yet to confirm this but am listing it first for now upon that information. Both editions simply state a publication date of 1961.
