My first duty station , Mess cooking, going

I worked on the line crew during my tour of duty which was extended due to
my ill infant daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed my tour with VC-2 and made
many great friends. I was privileged to work with a great group of officers
who distinguished themselves as true professionals. I returned to civilian
life in November of 1971. I have served the citizens of Baltimore County
for 34 years as a Baltimore County Police Officer. |

I think about the Navy all the time. I've had a lot of great jobs along the
way, but my time in VC-2 was the most memorable, oddly enough. It was, after
all, my 1st assignment. I always felt that I learned more from the Navy than
I did in college. I was the guy who painted the big metal insignia that hung
on the side of the hanger bay in Oceana. Thanks VC-2, hope all you guys
live forever. |

The most vivid memory would be the mock beach invasion
that we participated in. It was quite a thrill to see the aircraft that we
worked on up and flying, literally "in our faces". Then there was the day we
spent on the USS America during their dependents day cruise.The saddest
memory would be the loss of two pilots. One was Lt. Bell, a mustanger who
related to everyone. |

Had a great time, the CMC was Master Chief
Lesprance (probably misspelled) my division chief was AEC Clarence P Smith,
my best friends was AE2 George E Jordan.and ADR3 Bobby Bowls. Like all the
new guys in the squadron I painted the stair well to start- moved into check
crew,then to the AE shop became CDI on both A4 & S2 and day check
supervisor. |

I came to VC-2 as an ATAA, spent about a
week in the AT shop and then went to the line for (supposedly) a six-week
stint. I ended up on the line for my entire stay at VC-2. Anyone who would

of characters. Playing intermural sports. Poker games in the barracks
lasting all weekend. We played payday stakes and the big winner had to
collect from all the losers and pay all the other winners. It wasn't unusual
for there to be 20 participants. |

Great
times in VC-2. I designed the squadron patch I see is still being
used...prize was 30 days of no SDO duty! Hi to Rocco DeFeo, Kurt Rohdenburg,
Gary Harrell, John Watkins, Al Jenkins, John Morgan, Roger Wanamaker, Kuip
and all the rest. My first division was Material Control..and never did
understand the FSN logic. Became Safety Officer in '65, and first accident I
had to do was John Morgan's ejection at the 180. John didn't get a scratch. |
