JAMAICAN

JAMAICAN ME CRAZY

Jamaica is truly a Carribean paradise and my favorite place in the world. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled there twelve times, and each time I go, I don't want to come back to the "real world". The people are friendly, the country is poor but beautiful, and the beaches and water are the best I've ever seen. If you go to Jamaica and don't have a great time, it is your fault, not the fault of Jamaica.

To me, the best way to go to Jamaica, especially for first timer is to go to an all-inclusive resort such as a Superclubs property or one of the Sandals properties. These resorts are self-contained and provide a great value. For one fixed price, your lodging, meals, drinks and non-motorized watersports are included. Some of the resorts include free scuba diving and/or free golf. (Cart and/or caddy are usually required for an additional fee.)

I've stayed at Hedonism II ( 5 times) which is located in Negril, Hedonism III (2 times) which is located in Runaway Bay, Grand Lido Negril, Grand Lido Braco, Grand Lido Sans Souci and Breezes Runaway Bay (2 times)(formerly known as Jamaica, Jamaica) which of course, is located in Runaway Bay. Of the resorts, I like Hedonism II the best, but they all have good points and they all have not so good points. Hedonism II has a risque reputation, but you need to go there yourself and make up your own mind. Hedonism III is a very new resort (it opened September of 1999) and is still trying to find its identity. It has a waterslide that goes through its disco that is unbelievable! H2 & H3 are definitely not for the faint at heart, but definitely can be flat out party places. HII & HIII seem to rock twenty-four hours a day, provided that is, that someone has the energy to keep them going. The scuba diving in Jamaica is not as fantastic as it is in the Caymans or in Cozumel, but the diving is relaxing (better at HIII & Runaway Bay than at HII), the fish and coral are beautiful and the visibility seems almost unlimited!

For the faint at heart, each resort has a prude beach where bathing suits (bottoms at a minimum) are required. For the more adventuresome, the resorts I have visited all have a nude beach, which is a clothing optional beach. No matter which beach you choose, the sun will shine, the water will be blue and the drinks will be excellent and plentiful!

At Hedonism II and Hedonism III in addition to scuba diving, you can learn to fly on a trapeze, learn to juggle, play beach volleyball for hours, waterski, windsurf and dance the night away. If you are a party animal, the pajama parties at HII & HIII are legendary (average at other resorts)and the toga parties

give you a whole new appreciation for ordinary bedsheets. The beach party at HII is wild and crazy and even a slow night in the disco is better than most clubs in the states.

If you are not a party animal, most of the resorts have sing along bars and have night club entertainment after every evening meal. You can even make craft projects at some of the resorts. HII & HIII are truly summer camps for adults!

If you get adventuresome and choose to leave Hedonism II, be sure to hit Rick's Cafe, a local landmark in Negril. It is only a short cab ride away. At Rick's, you can show your courage, by jumping off their cliff. While there, you can also eat and drink to your heart's content (for a price) and usually see a sunset that rivals or exceeds that which you see in Mallory Square in Key West, Florida.

If you go to Hedonism III or Runaway Bay, be sure to visit Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios.

and go horseback riding in the ocean. These two activities are only a short drive away with the Falls being fun to climb and the horse back riding relaxing but not death defying. For you shoppers, both Negril and Ocho Rios have craft markets (best seen with a cab driver/guide). When we went to the craft market in Negril, we had a driver by the name of Captain Kirk, who said we got the best deals because we were with him, but who knows? The city of Negril is quaint but clean and provides many photo ops.

Half of the fun in going to Hedonism II, Hedonism III or any of the resorts is the ride from the airport to the property. Negril is on the west end of the island, about a two hour drive from Montego Bay and Hedonism III & Breezes, Runaway Bay are in Runaway Bay which is on the north coast of the island and about a one and a half hour drive from the airport. Most of the drivers are either present or former Indy Car drivers. (Actually they just drive that way!) Jamaicans drive on the left and passing on curves is just part of the adventure. When they offer you a Red Stripe after you get off the plane in Montego Bay or offer to stop for one on the way, take it! You'll need it to calm your nerves!

Jamaica is truly wonderful! No matter what your concern is, the natives will always reassure you - No problem mon!
