CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL ARTS~~~ If my costume is made of four panels, and I need 32 strips of fabric per panel,
how many strips will I need for the whole costume? If each strip is 22 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide, how many strips
can I get from one yard of 45-inch fabric?
This math-oriented residency exercises skills in geometry, arithmetic,
fractions, measuring, and problem solving and introduces Caribbean folklore and festival arts in the course of constructing
either a large-format folkloric character puppet or individual Carnival costumes. Grades 3-12.
CARIBBEAN DANCE~~~
This workshop exercises mind-body coordination, awareness of spatial relationships, timing, mental focus, and sequencing
memory in the execution of Caribbean dance combinations. Cultural and historical background of the dances will be discussed.
Beginning, intermediate/advanced, mixed-level, and K-12 classes available. Combined dance & percussion workshops also available.
CARIBBEAN JAZZ~~~ Warm-up, movement across the floor, and choreographed combinations of Caribbean/jazz fusion.
Beginning, intermediate/advanced and mixed-level classes available. Not recommended for elementary or middle school.
REPERTORY
CLASS~~~ Rehearsal and performance class for Caribbean folkloric or Caribbean jazz choreography.
DRUMMING/PERCUSSION~~~
Caribbean rhythms for hand drums and percussion instruments. Students practice listening, focusing attention, and coordinating
with others as they learn and play three-part Caribbean rhythms. Beginning, intermediate, private sessions, and K-12 classes
available. Combined dance & percussion workshops also available.
THE CARNIVAL PROJECT~~~ Creation of a Caribbean-style
Carnival parade in the Trinidadian tradition--a hands-on approach to folklore, history, music, dance, and the art of costuming.
K-12 and university-level residencies available.
STRETCH/ALIGNMENT CLASS~~~ Stretches and floor barre to work
flexibility, alignment, and opening of the hips. University-level only.
EXPLORATORY THEATRE~~~ Opportunity for
students to explore identity, social, or artistic issues in the creation of original solo performance pieces. Work on integration
of text and movement. University and high school level workshops.
