TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL AUTHOR VISIT

____ Contact me to make arrangements, several weeks before I am to visit.

____ Have my book(s) available in your library, and provide opportunities for readers to read my book(s) before the day of my visit. Read and discuss my book(s) as part of classroom work. Encourage independent reading, or read aloud to your students. The Q&A part of the session is especially lively when the students or program attendees have read the book(s)!

____ Place book orders at least six weeks ahead. It's better to have books delivered to you in advance, rather than wait until the day of the program. Participants will especially enjoy the event if they're able to take home and read the book(s) they have purchased before I arrive for the program. I can arrange beforehand to autograph books for students or program attendees.

____ If a book-signing is to be a part of the visit, allow enough time. Estimate about 30 seconds per copy for an autograph and brief conversation with the purchaser. For example, if I'm to sign 100 copies, I'll need about an hour set aside during the day.

____ Review my program description and tell me of any specific topics you would like me to cover. I want to meet your needs.

____ Send an announcement of this visit to your local newspaper, radio stations, TV stations, and libraries. Let the community know your school or organization is sponsoring this literacy event for students, educators, readers, writers, or other book-lovers. (See www.djlightfoot.com for astonishing details about my writing life and career.)

____ Provide a vertical--not horizontal--screen (a tallish blank wall will work) and a small table for my overhead projector, plus a small table or other workspace alongside to hold my transparencies. I use overheads a lot. I can provide the projector itself, but from you I need a suitable setup with tables, workspace, and a vertical-format screen that will display my images without cutting them in two.

____ Arrange for one or more teachers or parent-helpers to attend programs with their students. We writers are at our best when we can focus on the excitement of reading, writing, publishing, learning and creating. Sharing books, not maintaining discipline, is the purpose of an author visit.

____ Check out this article from Education World®: Make It Happen: Awesome Author and Illustrator Visits! and "Learn how to transform a school author or illustrator visit from an hour of entertainment into a life-long connection to reading and writing."
