So, what IS FreeBSD?
FreeBSD is a UN*X-like operating system for Intel-based computers, including fully-compatible Intel clones. This includes all "personal" computers using 80386 CPU or better.
FreeBSD is based on what is known as "4.4BSD"; that is, Release 4.4 of the Berkeley Standard Distribution of the UNIX operating system. The source code is all "C", except of course for certain processor-specific code which is probably in some variant of assembler (mostly bootstraps and such). You can find a history of UNIX on other sites; so, we won't rehash that here.
Don't wanna give up your DOS installation?
That's fine - FreeBSD provides a boot manager that allows you to select which operating system partition will be booted by default, DOS or FreeBSD (which ever one you booted last). You can keep your existing DOS (+Windows?) installation, and add a FreeBSD partition. ...and yes, it is known to work with Windows/95 (unofficially, MS-DOS V7 + Windows/95).
The Installation Tips page contains hints about setting up dual-boot and hard disk partitions.
