- Study Robins. Figure out how much the kids have learned about Robins. See: Literature Link - Who Really Killed Cock Robin? I created a game from the list of Robin facts on the website indicated. It is meant to be played as follows:
- I took all the robin facts and labeled the information from the book as accurate or inaccurate from the explainations given on the site. I edited the information from the site, the edited file is here.
- There are enough clues for 10 rounds with 3 accurate clues and 1 inaccurate clue each round.
- There are two teams of 4 people each.
- One team is the "panel" that has the clues for that round. The panel members each read their clues as thought they were all accurate.
- The second team has to try to figure out which statement is not accurate. There is a leader for the second team each time that chooses (this job rotates) to make their own decision or listen to their teammates (like Family Feud).
- Preferably you have an emcee making this feel like a game show.
- Each round the team that is the panel and the one guessing switch.
- By planning for 10 rounds there are a couple of clues left that could be used as tie-breakers if necessary.
- I tried to think of appropriate robin prizes, maybe blue jelly beans or some such.
- Add verses to the nursery rhyme the title is based on. See: Literature Link - Journey North American Robin
- Get water testing kits and testing local water ways. See: Literature Link - Who Really Killed Cock Robin?
- What city ordinances, if any, does your community have to regulate lawn fertilizers? Hard metals? Have students interview civic leaders about environmental laws and create a timeline to show the laws in relation to other events of the times they were enacted. See: Literature Link - Who Really Killed Cock Robin?
- Have students research various nontoxic alternatives to lawn, garden, and housecleaning chemicals and natural or biological pest controls. They can make posters or instruction leaflets to distribute in the community to inform others.
