James (Jim) M. Peak joined the El Paso Downtown Lions Club in February 1976 where he has maintained 32 years of perfect attendance. In 1983, he was elected to the board of directors and served in that position until 1985. He quickly moved up the ladder through 3rd, 2nd, and 1st vice presidents and was elected president for the 1986-87 term. During his tenure, the club averaged 200 members.
Peak has served as program chairman 10 times for the EPDLC and has chaired the Dinner with the Miners committee three times. This dinner recognizes outstanding male and female athletes from the University of Texas at El Paso. During the 12 years he served as the chief development officer for UTEP, he wrote the guidelines for the Permanent Endowment Fund which provides student scholarships for athletics. There are now two endowments equaling over $500,000. As a Lion, he has also chaired the Salvation Army Christmas Bell Ringing Program several times and has been recognized with that organization’s highest award for raising the most money.
To further Lionism, Jim has worked on membership by recruiting several new Lions. He has sold, boxed, and distributed roses for fundraising projects as well as served as chair for Ways and Means, Visitations, and Public Relations committees. In 2005, he was appointed Zone 1-A chair for District 2-T3. For the past 20 years, Peak has ranked in the Top Ten Lions for his club and was recently honored as the club’s “Lion of the Year.” He also received the “Melvin Jones Fellow Award” for 2005-2006. He served as regional chairperson for 2006-2007, and last year was elected Vice District Governor for West Texas Lions.
As a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), Mr. Peak has conducted feasibility studies and major fundraising campaigns in 22 states since 1989 and has raised over $500 million for different charities and non-profit organizations. This has enabled him to be a quest speaker at numerous Lions Clubs across the USA. He currently holds office on three key committees for AFP (The International Association of Fundraising Professionals). This organization has 176 chapters and 28,000 members worldwide.
Lion Peak has been married to his partner in service Julia Lord Peak for 45 years. They have four grown children who are all college graduates and three grandchildren (and two on the way).
